View Full Version : Favourites from October 1998?
Hi everyone,
I recently got my hands on an October 1998 issue of CL. I didn't discover the magazine until the end of 1999, so this was a big deal for me! I've been going through the magazine and copying the recipes I want to try (since I'll have to return the magazine). Does anyone have any "must-have" recipes from this issue? So far I've marked the following to try:
Chili Mac
Double-Chocolate Cupcakes
Pork with Potatoes, Apples, and Sour Cream-Cider Sauce
Slow-Cooker BBQ Beef Sandwiches
Mixed Greens with Sun-Dried Tomato Vinaigrette
Snickers Cheesecake
Jeff's Perfect Pesto-and-Herb Bread
Peanut Butter and Honey Muffins
Blackberry Smoothie
Halloween Green Bean Salad
Garden Salad with Creamy Lemon Dressing
Strawberry-Chocolate Meringue Torte
Reviews on these recipes would also be appreciated!! I don't do a lot of baking, except for everyday stuff (like the cupcakes)...I think the cider apple pie from this issue is a favourite with some, but I rarely make that kind of thing. As you can see from my list, I've concentrated more on everyday dinner type ideas.
I have it in my mind that this is one of the issues that many people like...if you have anything to suggest please let me know!

Jen,
I have only tried two of those recipes: Mixed Greens and Sun-Dried Tomato Vinaigrette and the Halloween Green Bean Salad. Both were very good. Looking over this issue again, I must say that a lot of those recipes look good. Hmmmmmm....this one deserves another look! I will be watching for your reviews on these recipes!

Have only tried one: New England Clam Chowder. My DH loves it. And he's very picky about his clam chowder.

I don't have this issue, so haven't seen many of the recipes, but I made the Slow Cooker BBQ Beef Sandwiches this weekend and they were really good. Very easy too, and mine didn't have to cook nearly as long as the recipe said. I also didn't throw the meat back into the crockpot with the sauce after it was shredded -- I kept them separate so that I could mix the meat and BBQ sauce to my taste.
The Cider Apple Pie is also fabulous. I don't do dessert often, but this one has become a standard Christmas or Thanksgiving dessert.

I made the Chili Mac for a church pot luck dinner. It was a big hit (one of the first dishes to disappear) and I had several people ask me for the recipe.

From the recipes you listed, I remember making the BBQ Beef, Chili Mac and Snickers Cheesecake. Now that my memory has been jogged I think I might make those three again!

Isn't it terrible, how we complain that we want our new issues/more issues, yet, we never get a chance to make anything twice! Especially all those really great winner recipes! I too, have "forgotten" a whole bunch of really good recipes, not to mention the millions I passed over and never made the first time around. I mean, I never made a single one of the recipes mentioned above (and they all sound good!)....where was I? What was I doing? How did I miss all of those? I shudder to think at how many more goodies I missed....and the new issues keep coming....and coming...and coming.... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

That was a great issue! I liked the honey peanut butter muffins spread w/ more peanut butter! The turkey enchiladas were a big hit w/ my dh, I just spiced them up a little w/ some canned chilies. And you must try the rosemary herb french bread! It's wonderful. angel biscuits are also great. In fact I think I liked everything in that issue. It's one of my favorites!
I make the angel biscuit recipe A LOT, and my whole family loves them! It's the best recipe EVER from any CL in my opinion!

My mom made the Chili Mac last time I was home and it was great. Thanks for reminding me - I got the recipe from her but haven't had a chance to make it.
I know I made the Spinach Ham Dip and I was surprised at how much I liked it. I don't remember what I served it on.
I also made the Spaghetti Squash & Vegetable Gratin.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention. There looked like a good recipe for Cassoulet and the Twice Baked Spinach Potatoes look yummy too!

i am going to bed this morning with dreams of the CIDER APPLE PIE. OOOhhh that was sooooo good....
Thanks for the suggestions everyone...maybe I will take another look at the magazine and pull out a few more! It's nice to know that some of these get good reviews, though.
Our favorite filet mignon recipe is from that issue - Filet Mignon with Peppercorn Mustard Sauce.
I usually add extra shallots, and less mustard.
I'm going to try some of the others mentioned here now!
