Lately, we've had various chocolate cake recipes with great reviews. I'm trying to make all of them in the next month to decide which one is really my favorite. Anyone else like to give them all a try? I've found the choices so far to be -- 1. Texas Sheet Cake 2. Mocha Pudding Cake 3. Eating Well's Died and Gone to Heaven Cake 4.CL Ultimate Chocolate Cake (Thanks Karole!)5. German Chocolate Bundt Cake (Sep 00) 6. Chocolate Walnut Cake (AP 01) Any others I'm forgetting?

I've tried the first two and love them, but neither of them is the "typical" chocolate cake....

The Texas sheet cake is a great moist cake, but more the type to be eaten with your fingers (at least I do) cause it almost reminds me of a brownie (though I normally abhor cakey brownies).

The pudding cake is so yummy and not too bad for you either.... great with ice cream in the winter. But very pudding-y, so not typical in that sense.

I guess I just wanted to pipe in with my thoughts that if I were testing for the "best chocolate cake" I would be on the lookout for the best chocolate layer cake (aka birthday cake) and neither of these would fit the bill.

But I love both of them, so please try them!

Okay, so I haven't tried any of these (yet http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ), but Kerri just posted a message about a Hot Fudge Cake that appeared in CL a couple years ago. It looks delicious, so you may want to add it to your list!

Mightyh. I've also already tried the first two nad agree with you that they're not typical chocolate layer cakes.Maybe there should be two bests -- Best chocolate layer cake and Best chocolate dessert/cake (excluding cheesecakes). I also just thought of another one I've tried German chocolate Bundt Cake. I really should n't be thinking about all this chocolate this early in the morning. As a SAHM I have time and opportunity to indulge myself with a midday dessert(which I have been known to do!)

I am very interested in everyones opinion on this matter also. I was trying to decide between the TX sheet cake and the Eating well cake to take to a party this weekend. Any votes between these two?

I know not everyone has the April issue yet, but there is a chocolate cake in that issue that also looks very good. I can't remember the name offhand, but it seems like it might be worth trying, too!

It's the chocolate walnut cake! I have been eyeing that since I got my issue but am still too loaded up on Baker's Death by Chocolate cookies to splurge again. I did see that someone posted a good review of it using pecans in place of the walnuts.

I have had the Hot Fudge Cake that emilycat mentioned. It's really good.. and even better with a scoop of Healthy Choice Low Fat vanilla ice-cream. It's tastes just like a hot fudge brownie sundae - yum yum http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My favorite is Devil's Food, and I like the recipe Eating Well had for a Devil's Food Layer Cake. It had a mocha icing, which was a meringue-type frosting flavored with espresso and cocoa. That frosting was delicious! The cake is the best I've tried!

i'm wondering if any of youhave tried the CL ULTIMATE CHOCOLATE CAKE--APR. 97. This is a very fine grained moist cake--maybe it depends on personal preference.

I've tried the Mocha Pudding Cake & the Eating Well Cake, and definitely prefer the Eating Well. In fact, I just finished a piece - its very chocolatey & hard to believe its light. I'm glad it freezes well too - it'll be nice to have it handy in the freezer for those sweet cravings.

Definitely the EATING WELL cake - but I'm impartial because I'm the one who started the whole thread looking for that recipe! But the fact that I lost the recipe for years and couldn't stop thinking about it and was determined to do anything to find it again should give you a pretty good clue as to how UNBELIEVABLE it is! (And I have made a few of the other cakes you mentioned and there is simply no contest!)

I made the EATING WELL cake the day peeps found the recipe and it is amazing! DH gave up dessert for lent and my girls don't like chocolate.....so I get the whole thing for myself!!!!! I froze most of it and thaw a piece as I want or need it....yum! This gets my vote - and thanks to peeps for being so persistent in finding the recipe!
