I want to make the Apricot-Oat Squares (pg 186 March 01 issue) tomorrow - and substitute raspberry preserves for the apricot. Do you think I should still use the nutmeg or is some other spice more appropriate with raspberry? I have no idea! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Thanks

I don't really know because I can't think of a thing I have made with raspberries that called for a spice. However, the thought of raspberries with nutmeg does not sound odd to me, and I have had some bars made with dried cranberries that had cinnamon in them and they were great. So, since raspberries and cranberries are both sort of tart; I think you could use either nutmeg or cinnamon. I would just experiment. Let us know how they taste.

My immediate reaction would be to think that nutmeg would be too "smoky" for raspberry. However, I'm not as much of an epicure as some of the others here. You might want to do some online searches for recipes that contain raspberry and nutmeg. It could be a very common combination!

Happy experimentin...

At Christmas, I made a "swirl" cookie that had raspberry rolled up into the dough. The recipe called for nutmeg, so it has been done. But I didn't care for the combination -- I thought the nutmeg was too strong and would have preferred to tasted the raspberry by itself. By the way, I make a high-fat version of those oat squares with raspberry jam and it has no nutmeg or other spice and they are quite yummy.

Hi all - in the end I just sprinkled some nutmeg in - probably ended up with about half of what the recipe called for which was only 1/4 t anyway. Now I have a cold so couldn't taste 100% but think it was okay for the two to be together - what we really thought of the recipe is that it ended up just too dry and falling apart it wasn't one I'd make again - thanks for your input guys! It is always so nice that a few people will take the time to give you some imput on this board http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif.
