I bought 10 apples today to make the overnight crockpot applesauce. Their total weight came to 5 pounds. The recipe calls for 10 apples or about 2.5 pounds. So, did you go by the amount of apples or by the weight? I'm not sure if I should use all 10 or just 5.

Thanks,
denise

I haven't seen the recipe, but if you have to core and peel the apples, they will weigh less after that. Maybe that is why CL used 10. I would probably use something in between like 7 or 8. Maybe someone who has made it will pop in and tell you what they did.

I always use weight as a guide. I find that the proportions are more accurate when working with other ingredients in the recipe. I have the Overnight Apple Butter in the crock pot tonight, and I think I ended up using 6 apples, but weighed them at 2 1/2 lbs.(they are large). The other night I did the Oven Roasted Potatoes with Sage Leaves (not sure of exact name - from the June issue I think) and it called for 2 baking potatoes or 1 lbs. I ended up using 4 small potatoes for the same weight. I hope this works out for you!

Thanks for the responses. If I hadn't heard from anyone I was going to go with the weight. Now off to make the apple butter! Can't wait until tomorrow morning!!

The recipe in 10/04 CL was actually for crockpot apple butter. I made crockpot applesauce overnight this weekend, and it worked great! It was also very good. Let me know if you want the recipe!

Kathy B : my mistake, I meant the overnight apple butter. I'm always calling it applesauce. I love applesauce too and would love the recipe for the crockpot.

I made the ovrnight apple butter over the weekend. It was really good but a little too sweet for me. I think it would have been better if I used a couple more apples or less sugar.

The recipe I used was a combination of two from Fix It and Forget IT. I found out Friday that we were having a potluck at work Saturday, so I threw this in the crockpot overnight, and it was ready to go in the AM.

Spiced Applesauce

10-12 c. peeled, cored and sliced apples (I used about 10 apples)
1/2 - 1 c. sugar
1/2 - 1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 - 1 c. water
1 Tbsp. lemon juice

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on Low 8-10 hours, or High 3-4 hours.

My Notes: I used a variety of apples that I bought off a "Reduced" rack. I used 3/4 c. each of sugar and water, and 1 tsp. cinnamon. Next time I would use less water, it was pretty juicy. But I just poured off some of the excess juice, and it turned out fine. If you like it less sweet, just add less sugar. Using the full teaspoon of cinnamon, the color of my sauce was a dark, cinnamony color. Again, you can use less if you prefer. When it was done, I used a potato masher and mashed it up for the chunky applesauce consistency that I was after. I will absolutely make this again!

If you want a fast method for making applesauce, try this one I use it all the time. Do NOT have a crockpot and don't ever want one:D
