View Full Version : Positive Poll: How has this board helped you?

Okay, this was sort of surfacing in the "nasty" threads. After all the negativity, time to change focus.

The question is: What have you taken away from this board that you have found particularly useful?? How has this board changed the way you do things? What have you learned? What do you like about it? You get the idea....

I will answer when I get the chance...there are three very handsome men who need my attention at the moment http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif .

Well, heck! Who cares about the poll when you've got them to keep you occupied...? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Oh. Forgot the question.

I wandered in here in desperation, looking for recipes I couldn't get from CL (back issues had sold out, they informed me.) LauraB was great enough to get back to me with what I needed in record speed and I was hooked. (I'm an easy customer, apparently)
But, I'm not what I'd call an enlightened cook-- I'm looking for good food, and if it happens to also be good for me, so much the better. So, you guys are teaching me healthy alternatives, and that's great.

What is also great is that I've made new friends, people who've broadened my horizons in a number of different directions, and not just having to do with food.

Oh-- one last thing I've learned, kind of as an offshoot of the above-- I've learned that sometimes if you're in the right frame of mind-- even the most basic of recipes can turn into a pretty decent comedy routine. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thank you for asking this Alysha as I have wanted to do so myself. I have learned so much here, about cooking techniques, problem solving, helpful hints, what to make cool resources such as Penzey's, the Spice House, great cooking and nonfood oriented websites. Not to mention the great recipes and nutritional information.

I also love the support from many of you, and consider you as friends, as you were very sweet when my Dad passed away last November. Although some users frown upon it, I like knowing that you are here if a special prayer is needed for someone and trying to use the positive energy found here. I love this board so much, I do not see the need to join any other cooking-oriented ones.

This sounds so hokey, but thank you all for being here and being you. After being off for a few days, I was having withdrawls.

Great question, lindrusso!

My favorite thing about this board is that I'm inspired to actually use my CL subscription. The reviews from fellow readers are very helpful in steering me toward the best of each month's offerings, and me wanting to have something to add to the conversation inspires me to try new things so I can share my impressions of various recipes with you all. Before, I tried maybe one recipe from each issue. What a waste!

I also like how nice people are on this board. There's a board affiliated with my local newspaper. Legitimate posters are few and far between and meanies who flame those brave few legit posters are legion. When I found this board, I had been visiting the health and wellness portion of that other board and been dismayed at how people treated each other there. I was glad to make the switch. I thought about letting folks "over there" know about the CL board, but I've never advertised this nice board's existence 'cause I didn't want the meanies coming here and spoiling it! I think the registration part helps maintain accountability for the posters so the meanies can never really get a foothold here, but as the Late Unpleasantness shows, any meanie vibe at all can be disruptive. Anyway, you guys have always been very courteous to me and to each other. Given the relative anonymity of the Internet, that's pretty impressive. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I've only been on the board for a couple of weeks but have found the people to be very informative. The topics discussed are endless, and although there are some hints and suggestions I have picked up, most of what I am doing already, is being reinforced.

What I like the most is that my eyes have been opened to recipes I may not have considered, or glanced over really quick. Now, I find myself going back, over and over again, to older issues and rediscovering this great magazine.

Also, there must be so many mindreaders out there. Many times I have thought of something, or questioned something, only to have it brought up and covered! The speed of the board is what impresses me the most. It's almost like being in a chat room, but having the garbage chatters filtered out. I LOVE IT!

First and foremost this place has saved my sanity (and sometimes encouraged my insanity). Having moved to the country (I'm sorry that I always come back to this point but the change has been dramatic) has it's good and bad points. My guys are very happy, so are the dogs and even the cat made the adjustment! I had to find something that occupied my time (other than soap operas) and books can get expensive. Most every phone call I make is long-distance (even in to town just 3 miles away). Here I can have "conversations" about something I like, share recipes and ideas and tricks I've learned over the years.
After all these months (since August) you realize when someone hasn't been around for awhile, you hurt for someone who is suffering some illness or loss, and then you truly Laugh Out Loud at some of the posts (thank you Gail for your wonderful sense of humor!).
I've tried recipes that someone else was looking for and help someone who is looking for a recipe.
Sorry for rambling!

I with Sneezles...I also live in the country and don't get to town that often. So, it's a nice way to "chat" during the day.

I have been reading the board far longer then I've been participating. I'm not really sure why I didn't , but I'm definetly hooked now!

I like to read what other people think of the recipes. For some reason not very many of my friends are into cooking. So I like to hear others successess and failures.

I have been cooking light (with CL since '93)for years, but still like to be reminded of hints, recipes, and ideas.

The main thing I have come away with is that I am not the only one out here who thinks about food practically every waking moment http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I don't even know where to begin. There is no doubt that this board made me a better cook by providing hints and information, anything from the amount of beans in a can to the proper freezing of herbs. I've tried (and loved) chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. I bought an oven thermometer last week, and sure enough, my oven was cooler by a significant amount. At last my biscotti rose properly! I learned the importance of good tools in the kitchen (and while Pampered Chef stuff is still far off, I did get a whisk and a lemon zester). I'm cooking more regularily and planning better.

But what really keeps me coming back to this board is the great atmosphere. I like that you can give your opinion and not have people automatically look at it in the wrong light. I like the off-topic conversations. I like how helpful everybody is.

And now I'm off to search for the CL Mastercook. I really thought I didn't need it, but you guys convinced me http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I love this board because of the great interaction between everyone. My cooking abilities have greatly increased as a result of reading posts about different recipes, and I think my "cooking horizons" have broadened a lot, too. I buy ingredients now that I never would have thought to have bought before.

Of course, learning about Tavolo.com and Penzeys.com has taken a toll on my bank account, but now I have great kitchen stuff and spices! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

And on a personal note, I agree with Wendy that it is great to have the moral support and thoughts & prayers of people on the board, too. I also lost some family members over the winter, and knowing that people had me in their thoughts really was a good boost for me.

I can second just about everything all of you have already said. I've tried many recipes I probably wouldn't have tried on my own. I'm cooking more and liking it more too. everyone is so thoughtful and eager to help with any problem that is brought up. I'm also learning to use my compter more efficantley. I feel like I'm an old pro now.

I enjoy being able to share my food disasters and triumphs with people who actually understand. I take great pride and enjoyment in trying new recipes from actual ingredients and not a box or a can. This board has given me tips and ideas on how to improve my recipes, lighten recipes, its explained to me the difference between and tube pan and bundt pan and given me the courage to actually try something called chipolte peppers in adobo sauce.

And on top of all that, I get to enjoy Gail's sight problems (I still think of the time she thought the post said "my car is afraid of the bread machine" not "my cat") and get reviews on recipes that I may otherwise have passed on and I get new recipes to try - I copied a bunch of quiche recipes last night.

Its just a nice supportive "place" to be.

I think that one of the things I like best about this board is how friendly and helpful everyone is. And quick to answer a question! Boy do we all just sit on this board, or what? I know I do! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I discovered this board a few months before it turned into the "new" board. What I find amazing is the amount of support and companionship that is on this board. There are so many boards out there that have that "negative vibe" pervading it. On this board we have people bending over backwards to make their points without trying to offend anyone. It's such a comfortable place to be.

Gail wrote: What is also great is that I've made new friends, people who've broadened my horizons in a number of different directions, and not just having to do with food.

I'd have to agree 100%.

Thanks for being there, because now that I'm addicted, I don't know what I'd do without you guys! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

This board has helped motivate me to cook more. I have tried several recipes after reading the reviews, that I would never even considered before this board. I have picked up ATON of cooking tips, and picked up new products, web sites, and BOOK RECOMENDATIONs (which is great.)

I've enjoyed reading all your responses - keep 'em coming! My handsome men/boys are now sleeping so here goes.

I could go on and on, boring you to death with what I've taken from this board, so I will http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif . It has made me more enthusiastic about cooking and, as a result, I cook more often. It has given me the opportunity to share my love of cooking with others who feel as passionately and a chance to learn from them (like how to cook tofu - whoohoo). It has encouraged me to try foods
and recipes that I might well have overlooked otherwise - like chipotles - where have they been hiding all my life????

And it has hurt my wallet! I invested in an upright freezer and a FoodSaver as a result of reading posts on this board. This was not an effort to "keep up with the Jones'", but two great investments that I use often. My husband supported these investments wholeheartedly, knowing he'd reap the rewards in the end http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif .

I have gained much (hmmm..seems like a contradiction here) from the Healthy Living Board as well. Our weekly discussions have proven informative, motivating, and inspiring. And although all the talking in the world doesn't mean a thing unless you actually DO something about it, it is our weekly discussions that keep my goals
in front of me. I now eat better, exercise more and am seeing real results.

I'd like to thank all of you for providing such a friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting atmosphere in which to share our love of cooking and fitness. And I, for one, relish our lively discussions - it makes me think, I almost always learn something, and I love that we can disagree without getting petty and hurtful (no matter what anyone else has said http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ).

Also a big thank you to Cooking Light for giving us this opportunity to come
together and for a great, if not always timely http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif, magazine.

And I would be remiss if I did not thank our fine director, Mr. Scott, my wonderful agent, the cast and crew....oh, uh, sorry, but those thank yous made me feel like I was making an acceptance speech (or maybe it was the long running-time http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif )!

It's great to read postings from others who really love to cook and cook healthy. The support that is shown here to others is truly amazing. It really reminds me that with all that goes on in the world, there really are some good people out there! So thanks to every one of you! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I can only whole-heartedly echo what everyone else has already said. I enjoy this board SO much. After cooking for 20++ years I was really burned out by it and not very imaginative in my meals. Then I received a subscription to CL as a gift and, although I loved the magazine and reading all the recipes, I still wasn't experimenting with different recipes. Well, I then (finally) got a computer, found this BB and you ALL have inspired me to have fun cooking again! THANK YOU!! Now if I could only get the graphics, bolding and italicizing (is that a word?!) down!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif To sum it all up, this is just a fantastic, well rounded BB and I've certainly learned so much and not just about food either which is a huge plus.

Thank you Cooking Light for bringing us all together!!

I think its pretty cool that a group of people that wouldn't know each other if one of 'em knocked on their door, have become friends. I've tried so many recipes that I originally passed over in the magazine just because someone on this BB raved about it, and I trust them!

I thought I was odd. In an age of career women that slip into their Power Suits every morning and shake hands with a grip stronger than my father, I'm a woman who works her eight hours and then loves coming home to cook for her family! Some women are in the corner discussing the Election results, and I'm talking to someone about the benefits of lowfat sour cream. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif You know what I found out? I'M NOT ODD! You people are just as strange and twisted as I am! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif I love having friends that care just as much about what their family eats and how it tastes as I do.

Oh Heck, why don't we all just join hands and sing Koom-Bye-Yah!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

In all honesty, I was a secret reader of this board for quite a while before I took the plunge and posted. Why? Because I was overweight! I can see that's a dumb reason now, but I felt like this board was for people who followed the Cooking Light lifestyle, and I obviously didn't!

But since reading all your recipe reviews, you encouraged me to actually TRY the recipes from the magazine. That was step one. Then slowly I realized that you were giving me the knowledge and the encouragement I needed to go on to step two - exercise! And step three - eat more fiber. Step four - eat the right carbs. I could go on and on.....But these steps have pointed me in the right direction. Now I have lost weight...and I'm still losing, I exercise regularly, I eat nutritious meals, my family is eating nutritious meals and actually asking me to "..make that stew again, Mom."

I'm getting maudlin...but you have all been great.

Now with that said....I have to also mention a few other ways this board has helped me:
--recipes, and more recipes!!
--kitchen tips and helpful hints (better than from any book I've ever read)
--advice for everything imaginable
--stress reliever (there can't be a better way to relax!)
--you've made me laugh - some of you are really funny!
--great travel tips (Hawaii, here I come!)
--buying tips (I'm not sure I should thank you for this one....my wallet really took a hit at Tavolo http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

But best of all - New friends - I consider you all my friends, and I truly care about each and every one of you.

I am thankful for everyones caring ways and real interest in each others questions and posts. I still can't believe that the recipe Peeps was looking for a couple of weeks ago was found! That was amazing to me! Only on this board would people go out of their way to help each other!

I am not an experienced cook, and enjoy reading what others have to say about recipes and how they made them work. I, too, have learned so much from you guys.

Also, I don't feel intimidated here, like I sometimes feel on another board I go to.

But, most importantly, you guys inspire me to want to be healthy! Several months ago, my diet was mainly fast food. I was addicted!
But, since finding this board, moving to Australia and being with out a car (fast food not convenient to get), I have been able to make signifigant changes. I have wanted to cook the great meals I have read about here. And, instead of craving a BigMac, I now crave veggies! I never dreamed that could happen to me!

This board has effected me in such a positive way! I think that's what keeps everyone comming back! It makes you feel good, and live well! Isn't that the way friendships are supposed to be? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I for one enjoy the BB a great deal. I think it is cool to swipe recipes and get to know each other in different ways. I am happy when I ever I have a question I know there are others who have an answer. I find that food is more than good for you phyisically it brings people togather as a community. One sunday one of the minister his sermon was on tables. How tables are used for different things, but most importantly what they do to bring togather.
I look forward to hearing from you guys about know there is always an ear to listen to what I or anyone else says.

First and foremost, I think this board has vastly improved my debating skills http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I'm not entirely kidding there, but what I love so much about this board is what so many others have already said -- the comfort in being able to post my opinions, worries, anxieties, hopes and successes, both in and out of the kitchen, with the confidence of getting a wealth of response in return. It's so inspiring to interact with a group of such enlightened and diverse women whose ideas and comments are at once informative, thought-provoking and offer such a wonderful sense of companionship.

On a less sentimental note http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif , I have always felt at least the teeniest bit out of place among my friends and family, since I spend so much time meal planning, cooking, trying and experimenting with so many types of dishes and cuisines. It is so refreshing (and reassuring ) to know that there are many other people out there who share the same passion for food and cooking that I do! And I am so, so, so excited to meet all of you this summer at CL. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Seems like it's all been said. I am still amazed and overwhelmed by the support and consideration everyone shows. My sister thinks I'm crazy posting things about my life here (most of you knew I was pregnant way before my family did!). Maybe it's because it's anonymous that we're not so afraid to "speak" our minds?

I have tried many recipes I would've skipped over and I really really enjoy catching up on everyone's posts when I've been away from the board for a while. I have gotten many woderful recipes from this board and so many good ideas. Plus, I never would've known about Pirate's booty!

Ohioan
03-29-2001, 07:34 AM
Mostly, all I can do is ditto what everyone else is saying, and to echo MrsReber's famous comment that being here is like sitting around the kitchen table with good friends.

But also, I have to say that I'd never realized how much of a cooking rut I'd gotten into until I started hanging out here. Although I considered myself a good cook, and an adventurous one at that, it wasn't until I started posting recipes, reporting on recipes I'd tried, and knowing that I had to account for any changes I'd made in the original, that I realized how often I'd made adjustments in recipes to "suit my taste" instead of really trying the recipes as they stood! Now, when I try a new recipe -- and like so many of you, I'm trying more of them than I used to, because everyone else is trying them and reporting on them -- I actually try the recipe, rather than adapting it until it's hardly any different from what I've been making all along.

That's kind of embarrassing to admit, but considering all the other embarrassing things we've admitted to here http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif, it ain't bad...

Cheers,
Phoebe

I really only started cooking a few months ago. I got laid off from my job and needed to find something to do with my time that made me feel productive. I had always wanted to learn to cook and, with the incredible help from this board, I'm well on my way. Honestly, I couldn't have done it without your help. I've learned so much from reading your postings and I appreciate that you don't make me feel stupid when I post a silly question. Of course, now that the question has been asked, I cannot think of any specific tidbits I have gained from this BB *but* that is because so many good recipes and bits of help have been offered on this board. Everyone is so witty and so supportive. What a great group of gals (and guys!)!!!

Phoebe, you hit the nail on the head for me. I was really in a rut but this board has opened up a whole new world of recipes, ingredients and cooking techniques for me. I love to read about everyone's opinions and experiences. I love the fact that everyone here is supportive, friendly, and so willing to share something of themselves. I agree on just about everything that has been stated here. Like Amanda I have found that I also have been inspired to use my Cooking Light magazine more so than others. If I try at least one recipe each month then I am doing good. I love the friendship, feedback, chat (even though I may miss most of it), ideas, tips, reviews, etc. I have friends also who don't care to cook, don't even look at a cookbook or watch a cooking program on T.V. I guess I could say that I have more in common with everyone here, even though we haven't met, than the friends around me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I can come here and enjoy everything that involves the love of cooking. I also have learned from others here whether it be a simple substitute of ingredient or an idea on how to change things. And the nice thing about this wonderful place is that every day "our family" keeps growing....which is a good thing! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

What I've gotten from this board is:
1. a lot of wonderful advice (much of which I've asked for),
2. suggestions for recipes I may not have tried had I not heard someone mention them (and how they turned out!),
3. a place where I can bounce ideas off of people who aren't afraid to give their honest opinions, and
4. a network of terrific, supportive, and friendly people who have at least one common interest... Cooking (Light)!

Thanks all! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Sorry to say that every time I have visited this message board whether it be a comment from me or reading other comments I have encountered enormous hostility from the members, specifically a member named "Emilycat." I have gathered from the messages that she is basically the "queen-bee" so to speak within the board however I have never had a good experience with her. I have witnessed other members being axed to death simply for sharing their thoughts. Since then, I have found a much more friendly board in "Familyfun.com" and find that whatever you choose to discuss, the members there are very careful not to offend you or to "cut your throat." Someone from the CL committee should suggest a member conference to discuss manners.

And emilycat, I have never found any of your posts the slightest bit offensive, insulting, or hostile. I love reading what you have to say! I can tell just from reading your posts (even having never met you), that you are a very cool person! I've been inspired by your marathoning -- in fact, I'm going to do another triathlon next month. I had debated about whether to do it. Finishing wasn't the issue, but I wasn't sure that my time would be respectable, since I haven't been in the pool or on a bike in months. And nobody wants to do worse in a race than they did the last time around! Anyway, how I do is no longer my concern -- just that I do it. So I'll go for it!

Enjoy the new board kitchenangel! And emilycat I'm sooo glad you're here to stay!

Anyway, as I was going to say, I've been thinking a lot about this question. Upon first encountering it, I compiled a huuuuuge list of helpful things I've taken away from this board. But rather than list a bunch of small, but nonetheless valuable, contributions, I've been thinking of the larger things I've gained that these smaller things fall under. Here they are:

1) A sense of community around my cooking (especially around cooking and eating healthy).
2) The courage to become a really good cook and explore intimidating but possibly mind-altering cooking experiences (like making my own pizza crust, baking bread, growing my own food, etc.).
3) The realization that despite the fact that I don't come across many centered, friendly, warm people in my daily life (probably because of my own shyness, not because they aren't out there) I have a place where I can find such people. This has encouraged me to also seek them out in my daily "non-virtual" life.

So, to sum up: you have all helped me grow as a cook and as a person. Thank you so much!

Hey, folks, pay no attention to "kitchenangel"; this is the person from the "carb" threads, trying to start a fight. Ignore the ranting, and maybe she'll go away. If not, the CL people will probably remove her, the way they did on the old board.

I wonder what's lacking in people who always try to spoil other people's fun?

That's probably not a bad idea. Personally, I think you should be first on the attendance list. Excuse me if I seem rude, but I think your post was out-of-line. You express disgust at the supposed level of hostility on this board, but you've taken every opportunity to single out people and attack them for no justifiable reason that anyone else can see. THAT is hostile.

you've been so helpful to me with my questions. I find this board to be filled with humor and respect.

Oh, thekitchenangel, where is this hostility coming from? This board is nothing but pleasant and everyone here are just that. Around this board all of us are QUEENS. No one here has or holds a special place on this board.....NO ONE! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I wanted to add that in my relatively short time here, I've never seen anyone fail to treat others with respect. emilycat--you're nice, funny, and unfailingly polite to all of us. I don't see how anyone without a persecution complex or similar problems can think otherwise.

Wendy W... cool graphic- reminds me of the little spot from the 7-Up commercials a while back! That's the other thing I got from this board- the knowledge of how to post smileys! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif By the way, my old computer crashed and I used to have a smiley site bookmarked- can anyone post one for me? Thanks!)

I think this board is great and an extremely positive community of people. I definitely have tried recipes that I never would have looked at twice, received great tips and answers to questions, and enjoyed the companionship of everyone on the board. The above post singling out a member of the board runs counter to the spirit of almost every thread I've ever looked at -- even heated debates about non-cooking topics always have remained positive and without malice.

CL should start a regular feature about its board, and the tips/recipes/conversations we share.

Hm. Ya know, I don't know if I should feel flamed, or flattered by the ensuing comments. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thanks, everyone, though, and I am truly sorry if my posts have ever stepped on anyone else's toes.

As we have discussed before Em, you have NOTHING to be sorry about!

I just don't get some people. Emilycat, you have nothing to worry about. You seem very passionate about the things you believe in- that's a good thing and I hardly think anyone here is offended by that. You are a confident, bright young woman and we all like you here.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this board has helped me in many ways. I learn something new every time I turn on my computer. About cooking, new ingredients, fitness, books to read, and most notably recently how to cook beans. Thank you Bean Queen, and everyone else!

I'm relatively new to this board, but I love it! Unfortunately, I'm at work many times I'm on it (like now) so I don't get to participate as much as I'd like, but I always print recipes and threads and take them home. I have even asked a few questions, and been thrilled with the replies. There is no one I can ask my many questions about cooking, but now I found I can come to this site and get all kinds of information. I love it!!!
Oh, emilycat, please feel flattered and not flamed. Kitchenangel is on her own here!

I just stopped in to read all the rest of the posts since I'd been here a couple of days ago...what a shock!
But as has been true of everything else that goes on around here, the wagons have circled to protect our own!
If it weren't for differing opinions what could would a discussion be?
Keep on keepin' on, Emily! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/cool.gif

Like Sneezles (one of my embarrassing pantry item friends!!!), I have been away for several days and was surprised.

To answer the original question, this board has provided a whole host of different things for me: lots of information on running, food, kitchen stuffs, travel tips, and other subjects too numerous to mention, a needed diversion on hectic days, a place to vent occassional frustrations, support, laughs, encouragement....

I most enjoy the articulate, intelligent discussion that occurs and am always saddened when someone comes along seemingly set on intentionally disrupting that.

I have been debating attending the trip to CL as I will be traveling over 15 days in June for work, but the opportunity to meet some of you, and especially Emily, makes me want to go. Gina

Hey, maybe that's what she meant to say: Queen Bean, not Queen Bee. In which case, I'm insulted that she got my name wrong! (Just kidding. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)

You know what's so great? That we love each other too much to let anything break up that love. In a way, the disruption may have been a blessing in disguise; it brought out the best in us and strengthened our bonding. (Arghhh, I can't believe I've been so mushy. Don't tell my students! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

When I first started reading this thread, I couldn't come up with an original idea, because everyone stated my thoughts. The recipes, hints, kitchen items, suggestions for meals, books, computer help, gardening tips... all the things I talk about with my friends -who can say that the internet isn't personal? Thanks to all of you! This continues to be a fun ride!!

I've been reading this board for awhile now and finally decided to jump in! I have become thoroughly addicted to it and find it fun! I have tried several recipes that I passed over but they got good reviews here, and of course you guys were right! I like all of your suggestions and some of the "dumb questions" have been questions of my own! I've also learned a few computer tricks and have added to my reading list! Even though I've just "met" you guys you are all great--and Emilycat I've enjoyed your posts as well!!

I love knowing that I'm not the only one who occasionally has problems with recipes. I've found that when a CL recipe didn't turn out the way I hoped, others are also having problems with the recipe.

I'm not sure if it has really helped... I am soooo bogged down with incredible recipes I want to try that I'm getting stressed! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Seriously, though... whenever I need a smile, I always know where to turn!

It is also nice to know that there are other single young professional women out there who truly enjoy cooking. So many of my friends do not understand why I'd rather spend an evening in the kitchen than out on the town. I know that you guys get it!

What to say that hasn't already been said????

I LOVE THIS BBOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!
(well, okay, that's already been said but I needed to say it again, for me!)

As a former working professional and new SAHM, this board has saved my sanity! I have learned so much from this bboard! My cooking horizons have been broadened, and my family has reaped the benefits! I don't own a scale but know that I have shed many pounds due in part to the recipes and advice of board members! Onward and upward!!!!

~~Susan~~

Have to add that I have recently moved to PA and have missed my cable internet (not offered in my area) so I haven't been able to keep up with the board as well. I was totally lost about the recent "unpleasantness". I was stymied by the food fight post and felt so left out! I am now caught up and must add that I was around for the initial "unpleasantness" on the old board and encourage you all to heed lindrusso's advice and ignore any further "angel" postings. Life is too short!

Emily, you didn't step on anyone's toes. I love your posts. You have nothing to be sorry about.

I love this board for the strong, supportive group we have here. I know if I have any sort of cooking or baking problem (or shopping addiction??? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif) I can come here and get the answer I need.

You guys are the best.

I'm another SAHM who gets a "adult break" through this board. I also get comfort in trying new recipes when I know someone else has tried them.

I tend to skip from topic to topic and don't read every post but I haven't personally experienced any hostility. Even when people have disagreed with me (and vice versa, I hope) I think people are quite measured in their responses. I think it's ok for people to have opposing points of view at times.

This reminds me of when I was working and we first got email (which I suppose makes me ancient), we needed to learn rules of behavior for email. What's written in an electronic transmission isn't tempered with facial expressions (smilies notwithstanding), tone of voice, etc. As a result, I think we need to give each other a little slack. For example, I've often been composing a reply and have to cut myself short when I hear my boys escalating in a disagreement ... then when I see my posting it seems a little blunt and I end up editing it.

In conclusion (this can be a long posting as the kids are in bed http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif), thanks to everyone for their continued help and camaraderie.

This is my favorite cooking board. I mostly "lurk" but everytime I have asked something I have received quick, excellent advice and ideas. Everyone seems so nice and helpful too. I also really really love the reviews and have actually tried several recipes based on them. It is great to have recipes - no matter how good they sound or how pretty they look - reviewed by "real" people.

I am new to this BB, but it has been such fun! I think I am addicted to it. I have never participated in one before, but I find myself here all the time.

I too have tried recipes (that I originally passed over) because of the reviews on this BB when. It is great to chat with others that love to cook. I have several friends who like to cook, but none of them love to cook like I do. Also, I am learning a lot about healty cooking and I hope to learn more.

Although I have only been participating in this BB for a short time, except for thekitchenangel, everyone seems so supportive and VERY nice. I have to say that when I read one of thekitchenangel's attacks on Emilycat (unforutnately, there is more than one), I was shocked. I am not usually too caught off guard by confrontation (i.e., people acting like jerks) because of my job (I see a lot of it there), but thekitchenangel's comments about Emilycat took me by surprise. I guess because they were just plain mean. I would like to say, "Man, who _____ in her Wheaties", but that would be in bad taste (oops, I just said it!) Emilycat, my advice (for what it's worth) is just to consider the source and forget about it. It's obvious that no one else on this BB feels even remotely the same way.

I would just like to say that I am newer to this BB, (about 3 mos) and used to just read it and lurk prior to that.
I must say that I think people are really nice here, and although the "oldtimers" don't really know me yet, I have felt as if people are very helpful and polite, and I have tried to be helpful and polite to them too!
Oh, forgive me for never noticing there was a "queen" ... hope I didn't step on her toes or robe! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
I was very shocked at the tone of the recent nasty poster.
I must also add that since I have tapped into this BB my whole family has been eating healthier, my die-hard red meat eater husband is now going mostly meatless (MM)
which is a positive thing due to his own family health history, and mainly because of the delicious ideas I have found recommended on this site. THANKS!!!!
I have been trying recipes previously overlooked and have learned new cooking techniques. I am now inspired to try more homemade breads (non bread machine even) gasp!
I am looking forward to getting to know you other BB members and I thank you all for helping me out and being a great resource. I hope I can offer you all something too!
