My brother is a casualty!
Kinda sorta.
He was moving some heavy construction matl's on the school he was building, and apparently he had a hernia.
To make a long story short, they don't want to operate there, so he has been transferred to Germany for the operation, and will be reassigned to the US after he gets better....his tour of duty is effectively over.
So I'm glad he made it home (relatively) ok.

That's terrible/wonderful!
I am glad that your brother is on his way home. Cheers to him for the work he did over there.

I'm taking it as good news.
I'd rather him be facing a relatively routine surgery than crazy Taliban types.

Good way of looking at it. My thoughts are with him for a speedy recovery.

<<gasp>> We're building schools? Gawd, we're just horrible, rotten, dirty Americans. How dare we.
Sorry about your bro, Escher. Hernias are never fun. Glad to hear he's on his way home. My BIL is returning home this month as well, after a 2 year tour of duty. He's officially retiring from the military after 25 years of service.

Sorry to hear about your brother -- but his coming home is quite a silver lining!
Good to hear from you again. Can you come back more often??
