I made these potatoes for dinner tonight and they were delicious! (An 8.8 out of 10 on my husband's scale). They were a cross between mashed and scalloped potatoes. When I first put them in the oven, they were very liquidy and I didn't think they would thicken, but they did. They tasted very creamy and buttery. The only change I would make is to decrease the salt next time. I keep our sodium intake low and rarely add salt even if the recipe calls for it. Because they were potatoes, I decided to add all that the recipe called for. They were too salty, in our opinion. Next time I will decrease the salt by half.
Excellent recipe!

I made these last night also. We only rated them about a 5. They just didn't seem to have much flavor. I'd rather have garlicky mashed potatoes than this dish.
BTW, I made these to go along with the Double Cheesy Meatloaf (from 1999, and also in the Complete CL Cookbook). The meatloaf was fantastic! I'm not a big red meat eater, but I loved it!!

I made the Aw Maw potatoes today and I won't make them again. They were good but the texture was so close to mashed potatoes that I wouldn't go to all of the trouble to make them again. It would be much easier(and the same texture and taste) to melt cheese on regular mashed potatoes.

I also made these last night and we were not impressed, too bland. I won't make them again. However we loved Psyco Chicken and I will definately make that again. Thanks Gail.

I thought this was OK, but my DH did say it was good. I didn't shred the potatoes, just sliced them thin and I added a dash of chipotle pepper since the reviews of blandness.
But for all the steps I wanted it to be a WoW dish. Won't make again. I suprised that CL picked this as one of their favorites.

I personally thought this recipe was great! I served it at a dinner for six I hosted this weekend, and everyone loved them. I thought they tasted like a combination of macaroni and cheese and hash browns. Definitely more "comfort food" than gourmet, we had the leftovers with meatloaf last night and it was the perfect compliment.
One change I would make for next time, though: I will use pre-packaged shredded potatoes. I agree that the end result is almost not worth the time and effort it takes to cook the potatoes, chill them overnight, peel them (this took FOREVER because the skin was so water-logged), and then shred them... and I even used my food processor for that last step! But everyone I served seemed to agree it was a delicious side dish.

SusanL,
Let me know what you think! I made them again for a dinner party last week and my guests all left with the recipe. They were a hit! I did cut down the salt to one teaspoon and they were much better. A lot of work, but I think they are worth it.
