As part of my plans to incorporate more whole grains into my diet, I am going to try the switch to brown rice this weekend. Question: can I cook brown rice in my faithful rice cooker? It makes the perfect sticky white rice -- I just throw in three cups of rice, cover the rice with water up to the level marked 3, and hit the "cook" button. I am assuming that this will work for brown rice too, but I wanted to double check.

Also, is there a specific brand of brown rice that you prefer? I am very picky about my white rice -- only one brand will do!

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think you need to add about 1/2 c more water for brown rice. (My rice cooker came with a chart with instructions for different types of rice.) Regardless, with this minor adjustment, rice cookers do fine with brown rice.

I cook brown rice in my Hitachi rice cooker all the time. I add the same amount of water as I do for white rice, and push the cook button. It just takes a little longer to cook than white rice does.
