View Full Version : Changing default email in Windows XP?

Hi everyone.

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this question. I've searched the internet, but nothing.

Anyway, with Windows '98, whenever I would click on an email link on the internet, my Yahoo mail would open. Now that we have XP, Outlook opens. I'm very annoyed and would like to change my default email. However, when I try to do so, it only lists AOL, Hotmail, Outlook and Outlook Express as choices. Is there any way to get around this? Or am I doomed to copy and paste addresses for the rest of my Windows experience?

Urgh. For every advance they make, it seems something gets sacrificed.

TIA,
Alysha

I have XP and use Yahoo, but I just go to http://mail.yahoo.com/?.intl=us and sign in there. I prefer it that way.

I just find it so much easier to click on someone's email address and have the Yahoo Mail window open up with the address already in it. For instance, I was trying to send PamE and email about Mastercook, so I came here, opened her profice and clicked on her email address. With Windows '98, Yahoo mail would open with her address already in the "send to" bar. But with XP, Outlook opens - since I don't use Outlook, it's very annoying.

A minor inconvenience, I suppose, but I got spoiled with Windows '98 and am annoyed that the supposedly "better" more up-to-date version doesn't allow me to do the same thing.

Alysha, try going into Explorer and going to Tools|Internet Options|Programs and then change your Email program there.

Hi Sue. Thanks, but that's what I tried when I found only the 4 options I listed above. I looked back on our old computer and for some reason Yahoo! is listed there, but not on the XP version.

Huh. You know, I just looked at mine and I don't have it listed either. I never noticed. I was on my other computer (Windows 2000) when I wrote the earlier post. Don't worry - I am going to figure this one out!

Aha! You just need to download the driver from Yahoo!

Found it in the Yahoo help and did it on mine. It's really easy:

I found that tonight too, but it's not working for me. :( I send their customer service a note to see if we can get it to work.

Thanks so much for your help. :)

If anyone else out there knows any tricks......

Yeah, I finally fixed it. The Yahoo download actually does work, but I think my computer was blocking it because of Active X control. I didn't notice the blocker bar message until today when I heard the blocking tone. So now I'm set - woohoo! Thanks for your help.

Alysha: How did you turn off the Active X control?

Well, I'm not terribly familiar with ActiveX Control but as I understand it, I didn't actually turn it off, I had to allow it in order for this to install on my computer. Allowing Active X can make your computer vulnerable, so the my computer was blocking it until I told it to allow it (something that the old IE did not do).
