The thread about planning for retirement has got me panicking, I mean, thinking. Can anyone recommend a good book about financial planning? Nothing too technical. Even something with money-saving tips would be great. I'm not a carefree spender, but it's time I got serious about budgeting for the future.

Try Everyone's Money Book by Jordan E. Goodman and/or any number of Suzy Orman's books- 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, The Road to Wealth, etc.

Dave Ramsey - the Total Money Makeover - is my current read. I borrowed it from a friend - I hear him on the radio, but have not read the books. Very good plan to follow if you have debt issues.

Basically common sense advice from God and Grandma.

You might also try subscribing to Money or Smart Money. You can them really cheap at one of the discount magazine subscription companies. Reading monthly will keep you up to date. I prefer Smart Money.

Smart Women Finish Rich by David Bach, who, I think, also wrote Automatic Millionaire. I plan to get both for my daughter. The reviews in Amazon books are good for both. There is also one called SMART COUPLES FINISH RICH.

There are a lot of websites that can give good information--msn.com is one--just click on "money" on the left column. Google will find lots more.

I liked The Automatic Millionaire too. You also might want to check out Suze Orman's site - www.suzeorman.com and Clark Howard's - www.clarkhoward.com. In addition, Jean Chatzky has a new book out. She is the Editor from Money Magazine and the Financial Editor from the Today Show (www.jeanchatzky.com). Hope this helps!

I've never heard of Suzy Orman or her books. I'm Canadian. Is this an American thing?

Oops... yes, it/she is! She has a show on CNN (I think) and she appears on QVC shopping channel from time to time.

Suzy Orman is American.

Get The Wealthy Barber. It's Canadian (so it will talk about RRSPs), and is a very easy read. It's a little dated, but not much.

Suzy Orman is on CNBC. She can be a little annoying (she likes to tell people to get a divorce) but then Dave Ramsey comes off as abrasive to some people too.

Theres a also a short book called the "Richest man in Bablyon " too that is recommended a lot.
I have heard of most of these books. You have to find the one that fits your style, so to speak.
