karole,
CookPacs are avilable in both formats but only available online at
http//:www.cookn.com
or you can access from the CL homepage.
They are $6.98 a month, except the entire year of '97 is a special price. This is what I have for CL recipes. I have MasterCook 6.0 but it's not the CL version.

I think people are confused about the Cookpacs.

A company called Cookn.com sells cookpacs for $6.98 each. They contain all the recipes from that particular month, and are compatible with MasterCook, and their own proprietary software (for which the cookpacs were originally designed) called CookWare. The cookpacs have only in the last 2 years or so been compatible with MasterCook. The cookpacs don't work all by themselves. You have to have a software program first. Most people on this board have MasterCook.

No one is ever much interested in hearing about CookWare. I have posted about it a million times, and it's just not something people are interested in. Everyone likes MasterCook, and that's great. I have never played with MasterCook, so I have no basis to compare the two programs.

All I can say is that I've had CookWare (which is FREE when you buy your first Cookpac) since 1995, and I love it. I use it almost every single day, and I have every single cookpac since 1995. I have hand typed in most everything from 1991 through 1994. So my CookWare database is pretty darn complete. It's a simple software, it works well, and it serves my purposes. I do believe they have a Mac version of it, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hope that helps! And if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to try and answer them for you.

Grace-

I just recently bought my first Cookpac and installed the Cookware software--and I love it! But, maybe you can answer a few questions I had....

First, I really like how you can adjust the servings to the recipes, but when cutting and pasting from say, Word, do you have to type the ingredients in? or is there a way to paste them, too?

And also, I really like how it has the pics for the different types of food groups(so you can organize your recipes), but how do you categorize things that don't fall under these like, breakfast casseroles? And, how many cookbooks do you have made?

Thanks!

Hi Amanda! Glad to hear you like your software. I don't think I could live without mine, I've become so dependent upon it.

To answer your questions, yes, you have to type in the ingredients. Unfortunately there is no way to cut and paste the ingredients (just the directions).

Things like a breakfast casserole, Cookn.com automatically cateogrizes into the Miscellaneous category. (When you download the cookpacs, and copy them over to your CookWare software, the recipes are automatically categorized. You can change the categories if you like though. I typically leave them where they start off, and move them to the "favorites" category if it's something I especially like).

And lastly, I haven't made any other "cookbooks". I keep everything together in the original cookbook. I like looking through everything at once. For example, if I find say, fresh asparagus at the store, I buy it, go home, and punch in Asparagus in the software. Then I click on the "ALL" category (the picture of the chef at the top), and I get every single recipe since 1991 that has asparagus in it. This saves me the time of searching through all my magazines, looking for asparagus, which would, of course, take hours.

I wanted to make a new cookbook called "To Try", and fill it up with the recipes from this BB and elsewhere, but if you end up liking the recipe, and want to move it to the main cookbook, there's no way to move it - it would have to be retyped (recopied/pasted). So I haven't bothered with that, and just keep my "to try" folder as a physical manila folder with the recipes printed out on paper stuck inside. Then I type or copy/paste the recipes in my main cookbook if I end up liking the recipe.

Hope that helps, and enjoy your software! I hope you find as much enjoyment in yours as I do with mine! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Grace--

Thanks for the tips! I think I will be entering my own recipes into the cookware soon! There are so many options that make life a lot easier when searching for things! And, I love the organization of it all.
