I made fish this evening that I had purchased at Trader Joe's. While it tastes wonderful, it has a TON of bones! (I hate fighting with my food! no whole lobsters for this girl!)
I'm wondering if others that have purchased fish there have had similar bones to pick??
What kind of fish was this? Have you purchased this same kind of fish elsewhere with no bones?
(I'm just asking because I've found certain fish just seem to have alot of bones-- red snapper, for example.)

I'd be interested to find out what kind of fish also. I've never had this problem but perhaps it's because I never bought the type of fish you did. The salmon, cod, mahi-mahi and and I know I've gotten a couple of other kinds (that I can't seem to think of the names at the moment) never had any bones.
Oh, I just remembered that I've gotten Halibut at TJ's too...and no bones.

I usually buy fish fillet from TJ's, either tilapia or cod. No bones, no skins, just edible pieces. If you have a problem, you can tell the people in the store. If you bring in the fish and show them, you will get a refund. I buy their 75% fat free cheese, and frequently it gets moldy. I just bring it in with the price label and get full credit.

It was a three pack of salmon steaks. It had big bones, little bones, I never had a bite that didn't have bones in it! I've had two of the three in the pack and both were the same. It was very disappointing.
Let me say up front that I don't buy TJ's fish as a rule because there's loads of fresh available here.
...but, insofar as salmon steaks go, I for one have gotten a few which had a lot of bones. For that reason, I generally will stick with salmon filets. Offhand I can't remember ever getting one with bones and I eat a tremendous amount of fresh salmon. I'd like to hear the experience of other salmon steak people as to their experiences. Dunno if you got an unusually bone-filled fish (most likely all steaks were cut from the same critter) or if perhaps you simply would be happier with filets. In any case, due to the many positive remarks we seemed to get about TJ's products, I certainly wouldn't give up on their fish after one bad experience.

Kelli, I think that all salmon steaks have bones. We haven't been buying salmon, and when I did, I usually got it in one of the supermarkets, Ralph's Freshfare, or Pavillions. The Salmon STEAKS always have bones. You want boneless, you have to buy FILLET! It is more expensive, but it is worth it! Don't know if TJ has fillet. I will check next time I go there!

Thanks so much for this post. I always buy salmon fillets and have never seen a bone. I've been tempted to buy steaks, but now I won't because bones would be a big problem for us.
