Cheryl-I haven't made anything yet, but there is a thread just on the Bishop book with loads of recipes that sound great!
Martha Stewart's Christmas
Reader's Digest Cookies
CL The Best of The Best
I just got the last 2 last week and haven't used them yet -- except to post a couple of simple cookie recipes. The Martha book is the only one I think I own, and I just got it about a week earlier. My husband made the cranberry upside down cake for Thanksgiving. It was very good, but it was baking slower than the recipe indicated.

When it arrived, I was such a goody-two-shoes about not reading one of 'my Christmas presents to myself' that I did no more than make sure it had all its' pages, (got it at half.com), and then I swiftly wrapped it in holiday paper to keep myself from peeking.
I honestly have no idea what its' like, what sort of recipes might be in it or anything. Sorry to be so unhelpful, but I wanted to save a few surprises for myself.

Actually, An Omelette and a Glass of Wine isn't a cookbook, it's a collection of Elizabeth David's writings.

Just three? I've been a bad, bad girl lately so I will work my way backwards with the list:
Modern Classics 2 by Donna Hay
Barefoot in Paris
The Best of Cooking Light
I also bought the following from The Good Cook Bookclub:
Sweet Stuff
The Good Cookie
Chocolate American Style
Desserts That Have Killed Better Men Than Me
The Last Course

More from Magnolia
And I still have a few on my "want" list.

Do the supplements count? I bought CL Slow Cooker and CL Quick and Easy supplements. If they don't count then, CL Light and Easy Menus, Cooking Light Complete, and Lady & Sons & Lady & Sons Too. I'd really like to get a good vegetarian cookbook. Jack Bishops sounds good and so does 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes.

No, no, no ... NOT another thread with even MORE temptation! That's how I ended up with my last batch of cookbooks! ;)
Just arrived in today's mail from Overstock.com:
Grilled Cheese - 50 Recipes to Make You Melt The cover picture alone sold me on this book
The Panera Bread Cookbook
Small Batch Baking
THEN, today I just ordered A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen from Amazon.
And two days ago, picked up Best Ever Indian Cookbook and Cooking Light Annual Recipes 2005 from Sam's Club.
I know, I know, more than three cookbooks, but I've been bad, very bad. Christmas shopping is tough ... one for her, one for me, one for her, one for me...

Hi Helene- I asked about you during that wicked snowstorm you had awhile back! Things sound like they are back to normal now which is good news!:)
About A year in a Veg Kitchen ...I haven't cooked anything out of it yet-I am afraid it doesn't appeal to me as much as it does to others here. It seems like almost recipe calls for the few foods we aren't fond of .Ilike chipotles occasionally but so many recipes call for them in this book that i won't try them on a regular basis. I am surprised at myself but it just isn't a book that "speaks" to me. (I am definately in the minority om that!)
I don't belong to Costco and have only been there once in my life- got mine through good old Chapters.ca.:)

Do ones my DH bought me count?
If so, mine are:
I'm Just Here for More Food -- Alton Brown
Pike Place Market Cookbook ( from his business trip to Seattle)
and Moosewood Celebrates.
Now, all i want for Xmas is Barefoot in Paris, Pat Conroy's new cookbook, Barefoot Contessa Parties & Barefoot Family Style. OH, and maybe Emeril Potluck. OH, and Junior League Centennial. Oh, and ....
you get the idea

I seem to buy cookbooks in bunches, so here are my last 3 orders:
I'm Just Here for the Food (Alton Brown)
I'm Just Here for More Food (Alton Brown)
--I got both of these autographed a few weekends ago at the Great Big Food Show in Cleveland :D
Fig Heaven (Marie Simmons)
A Beautiful Bowl of Soup (Paulette Mitchell)
Sin-Free Chocolate Smoothies (Gabriel Constans)
A Year in the Vegetarian Kitchen (Jack Bishop)
Fresh Food Fast (Peter Berley, Melissa Clark)
The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet (Nava Atlas)
The King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion
Another 250 Best Muffin Recipes (Esther Brody)
I like them all, except for the smoothie one and the 5-ingredient one. The soup cookbook and the fig one are okay - nothing has really caught my eye yet. My most-used is the Bishop cookbook. Oops ... I almost forgot - I ordered Bishop's The Complete Italian Vegetarian Cookbook a few days ago so I should get it next week. A miracle - I only ordered 1 cookbook this time (only because I ordered the Lodge 5-qt enameled Dutch oven at the same time!)
Nice collection tholbrook!!!

I actually do not have all that many cookbooks (YET!) - less than 50, I think. I know there are several people here who have many, many more than that (you wouldn't be one of them now, would you? :D).
But this is a growing addiction ... ever since I joined the BB, you might say! You all post such darned good recipes, sometimes I just have to have the whole cookbook! And then there are these threads ;) - just what I need to see: more "gotta-have-it" cookbooks!

all of those were within one week. it would have ended after the first 4, but then the Jack Bishop thread convinced me i had to make a other visit to amazon. sigh. of course, once there, i have to get 2 books to make the free shipping. but then i always wander off the the clearance section before checking out, and that's how i wound up with the two lesser-known titles.

I've been stocking up on cookbooks lately too.
Barefoot in Paris (Ina Garten)
(I also bought a copy for a book exchange and the book I got from the exchange is "Simply Ming"-by Ming Tsai)
I ordered "A Year in a Vegetarian Kichen" (Jack Bishop), but my mom was doing an Amazon order and I haven't received it yet (maybe she is holding it for Hannukah?)
I also ordered Cooking Light Annual 2005 from Overstock.com and it hasn't come yet, but I think I will have DH wrap it up for me and give it to me from the kids.
I ordered my MIL a cookbook and had to order a copy for myself--"The Essential Book of Jewish Festival Cooking" by Phyllis and Miriyam Glazer.

I hope my husband doesn't see my list. ;-)
Barefoot Contessa Family Style - Ina Garten (Costco 21.99)
The New Best Recipe - CI
The Quick Recipe - CI
I was a little miffed that I got the CI books at a CI book signing event in their Brookline, MA studio where they advertised special low prices & I just saw the New Best recipe at Costco for even less! Oh well. I have tried the Blueberry Muffins from the Quick recipe (I think) and they were very good & easy if I remember. It calls for melted butter that makes it so quick (I think). I have made the pie crust recipe from the Best Recipe & it worked perfectly, I have never really liked pie crust before this recipe.
Barefoot Contessa is one of my favorites right now. I can feel my resistance weakening & I may break down & buy the Barefoot Contessa (original) and the Parties books. I actually just saw both of these at Home Goods for a decent price.
There should be a warning about reading this thread, it may encourage longer Wish Lists!!

I SOOO feel an urge to go shopping now, but I promised DH I wouldn't as a good proportion of my Chirstmas wish list is cookbooks (at least the affordable things on it).
The last ones I've gotten are
Garlic, garlic, garlic
Sunset Low Fat
I've also tried to join the Good Cook club 3 times now and they haven't sent me a thing. I sent them an email yesterday and haven't heard anything. Darn it, I want cookbooks!!!!!

I wouldn't say "full" of recipes, but there are recipes scattered throughout from the places she's visited. It also includes information on the places, how they got their start, how she chose them, what she had and enjoyed, etc. I didn't think it would appeal to me until I got a chance to browse through it one day at Costco...

MISSINDI,
I just bought the Panera one on Sunday, so far have
just been reading it as opposed to cooking from it.
I don't expect to be cooking anything from it
until next weekend at the soonest, when I do,
I'll post!

Oh, I forgot to mention, I also bought Sauces, by James
Peterson, the 1992 Cookbook of the Year. Now if I only
had more time to read them and cook from them. When
I went on vacation, I didn't want to bring a novel,

OK, I just went to B&N at lunch and found my latest conquest:
Everyday Dining with Wine by Andrea Immer
I am tempted to just buy it, as I cancelled my Good Cook club membership (in the hopes that they will "lure" me back with a new offer in a few months). I am checking to see if newbookscheap.com has it, but the idea of settling in to read it tonight with a glass of wine, curled up in a chair, pretty freakin' tempting.
Do any of you ever buy your books at full price? As far as cookbooks go, it is $30, which isn't too bad.
i am definitely trying to justify here.... :o

I hardly ever buy books full price, and hope that Costco, Overstock or Amazon has them. Sometimes it's hard not to give in to temptation, that's for sure! I got that one at Overstock for my brother-in-law, who's into wine ... hope it's a good one! :)
I sometimes buy full price, or else I get it from Amazon. BJs has some new books that I occasionally buy, but usually they only have potboilers.

helene, i can slip almost anything, including a piece of furniture, into the house without SO noticing. lol, something like that, he will suddenly take notice of 2-3 weeks later. truth. (although it wasn't large.)
the real trick is to get him to pay for my cookbook -- and cookware -- splurges, and i'm not above making a scene; we had one yesterday at Marshall's. silly fellow, i always win these battles in the end. and he IS the primary beneficiary (as in, "the way to a man's heart, etc.)
lonetree, i'm with you, i love to check cookbooks out at the library and test-drive them first. more often than not, i don't buy them. case in point: Alice Medrich's "Bittersweet." i think the world of her, but i knew after 3 weeks of not cooking from it that i didn't need to own it. i also suspect it didn't have a large sales volume, in which case i will buy it next year when it's remaindered.
Sami, in terms of "clearing out" shelf space, for me, no way. i just find a place to fit more shelves. when i moved 10 years ago i de-accessioned about 100 cookbooks, only to wind up buying some of them back from the used book trade-in store. never again.
Aubergene, I have 3 shelves of a kitchen cabinet devoted to cookbooks. Then I moved some to the den where I can get at them easily. My latest move is to devote a shelf on my DD1's closet (she is married and gone) to little used cookbooks. Next I might migrate to the basement bookshelves, where they never would be used.
What i really should do is not access this BB for 1-2 months and start using the cookbooks.

Sami, my next project is to get shelving put up about 15" down from the ceiling in a hallway off the kitchen...if i use both sides, it should be good for a couple-300. then i'd move the ever-increasing magazine collection to the sturdier floor-based shelves. p.s. see my dream thread; you got me thinking.:)

"Cooking w/ Crab" by Margie Kauffman. Apparently out of print but found it on half.com.
Just got tired of consulting the scrawled notebook paper for crab cakes -- vacationed at a rental house in Maine and the book was on their shelves ... lovely recipe.
(I do have 2 or 3 other recipes that I felt compelled to hand-copy and have since used, so I figure it's a good bet.)

Missindi,
Please tell what you found at the dollar store. I love finding bargins like that.
I do shop a lot (not always for cookbooks) at our local independent bookseller, and the best part is that every book in stock is always 40% off. She also will order and depending on where it comes from (her distributor or somewhere else) it will also be 40% off.
My list is growing and I am almost out of room on my shelves, DH constantly complains about how many cookbooks I have.
However, not a new acquisition, but one of my most used, favorite cookbooks is called "The Family Baker" by Susan Purdy.

The last three cookbooks I've bought:
Small-Batch Baking, by Debbie Maugans Nakos, about which I have already said plenty;
one of those giant, encyclopedic British cookbooks with big glossy pictures, this one called Chocolate (or possibly "Chocolate (something)") purchased at Chapters for very cheap, and I don't know why I bought it. It depresses me faintly, because it includes a huge section on making chocolate candies, and all the pictures show smooth, glossy, perfect filled candies which, even if I could make ones as nice, would take time and effort (I just know) out of all proportion, only I can't stop thinking what nice holiday gifts they would be.
Cooking Light Annual, 2001. Purchased at the grocery store in one of those bins, for less than the magazine costs, back in, oh, September.
I've been trying to cut back. I actually pruned out a whole bunch of cookbooks, and they're buried in the three boxes of books I want to sell.

I am *trying* to employ a new strategy before actually buying a new cookbook by checking it out of the library to see if I really like and if it has enough recipes of interest. Based on that, the next ones on my list are:
Jack Bishop's A Year in the Vegetarian Kitchen - with so many raves on this site about it, I had to check it out and love it!
Patricia Well's Vegetable Harvest: Vegetables at the Center of the Plate - besides interesting ways to feature veggies, enjoyed the suggested wine pairings, too

Last 3:

A Baker's Tour, Nick Malgieri
Next on the list? Too many to list! :o :p

That's why I got it. DH and I love jam and preserves, but some of the more traditional recipes make way more than we could eat. All the recipes make around 3-5 jars (pints usually, when talking about jams and preserves), and seem interesting enough.

Interesting...I've never really warmed up to this cookbook. I almost got rid of it but decided to keep it. I'm curious to know why you love it so much? Maybe I need to get it out and browse through it again.
My latest cookbook purchases:
