At our house it used to be DH exclusively, then once he was travelling on business and I HAD to have a steak, so I pulled out the grill manual and *voila!* I've been grilling ever since. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/cool.gif Don't know why I never did it before... Probably because my mom never grilled - that was (and still is) dad's job.

We both grill. With one odd clarification: he grills meats; I grill veggies http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Hubby. Always. Maybe that's why I can tout the wonderful things about charcoal grilling -- I don't have to deal with the mess or hassle!

Generally, DH grills. No reason other than routine. We grill 2-3 times a week, rain, snow, or shine (chicken, salmon); he does the grill and steams the veggies, I do salad and other dish, dessert, we both do dishes (no dishwasher).

Oh, definitely hubby. I don't do it because I'm afraid that it will then become my permanent job (my MIL made that mistake http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ). I cook virtually all of our other meals, so I like the break!

Lindrusso - I can relate. He used to do dishes. Then I did them a couple of times. Viola, I know always do dishes.

DH (in 3 weeks) grills but I do the prep work. I won't be making the same mistake twice.

I grill; gets tiring running up and down the stairs, checking the meat on the grill, checking the rest of the dinner upstairs. Husband hates food preparation, and tends to get distracted -- blackened steak!

We both do. I assembled our gas grill when we bought it, and I think that gives me the right to use it! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

i'm with lindrusso - i basically cook everything else, so i leave the grilling to my DH. i tend to do most of the prep work though, like marinating, etc. plus, i think grilling can be a macho thing, so i leave it to him http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I do. He used to when we had a regular charcoal grill. But in 85 we got a gas grill. He grilled hamburgers and they were a burnt mess. Next time I grilled and mine were fine. I've been doing it ever since. To this day, I don't know if he planned that or not.

I'm in the "let him do it I do everything else" camp. He doesn't do dishes very often at all, he doesn't cook, he doesn't even help with food prep. So he grills. And that is fine with me.

When my husband is home, it's his job to grill whatever he knows.(hamburgers, meat, vegtables, ect) and I get everything ready for him. I grill when he's not home or when I am cooking something unusual (paella, full turkey, fruit, smores etc). I guess if it is not something easy to grill, it's my job otherwise it's his.

We both do. DH has a heavy hand with the heat controls - I usually sneak out and turn down the heat when he's not looking. He has never figured out that is why our meat doesn't turn black anymore before its done on the inside LOL! We grill all year long - even when we lived in New England and had several feet of snow on the ground.

Ours is a bit of an odd situation...my hubby THINKS that he does the grilling. He tells friends that he does the grilling. He has an apron that says 'BBQ Stud' to wear when he does the grilling. Truth? I do. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif I do the marinating, I do the rub, I do the turning on and pre-heating of the grill (propane) and I spray the racks with cooking spray. He takes the meat out on the plate with the big tongs, slaps it on the grill, takes a big 'ol sniff and says "Man, that's smelling GOOD!", then walks back into the house or goes to play with the dogs. From that point on, I'm checking, I'm turning, I'm lifting, I'm serving. Then we sit down to the meal and he says "Man, can I BBQ or WHAT?"

I think it's part of a wifely duty to let him have his little dreams! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

I had to laugh because we know a lot of guys that believe they are doing the BBQ too. I do take care of the marinade & if its kebabs of assembling them but from there on its DH's domain. I have been hinting that he has not used the rotisserie attatchement I got him nor a smoker/chips. Since the weather is getting better maybe he will get interested in trying them out (hope so!) I let DH grill since its good that he gets interested in food preparation.

DH does wonderful steaks, but give him chicken or seafood, and it's not so wonderful. So, it depends on what is on the menu as to who grills.

I do all the grilling (and cooking) -- there's no way I'm letting him get all the glory for something so simple! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Well, that's only partly true. In my family we never had a grill so I didn't grow up thinking it was "dad's job", then when I watched my in-laws BBQ and my husband's father did all the grilling it irritated me to no end. (I guess I saw it as a kind of extension of other things in my husbands family -- only men at the "head of the table" and only women do the cleaning up). Luckily my husband actually agrees with me. If I ask him to, he will do the cleaning too because he agrees that that is only fair, however he is so inefficient it pains me to watch. At his parents house though, he helps out until the last crumb is cleaned and I watch, delighted, from the couch. (I do help with the prep work and usually make a dish or two (and grocery shopping if necessary)...it's not like I don't do anything!)

Jewel-now I am wondering if perhaps your DH and my DH are somehow long lost relatives or something! Too funny!!

I strongly suspect that something in the 'y' chromosome (forgive me if I misspelled that. Spring Break!!) brings men to feel that they are the masters of the grill. We have a house at the lake, so during the warm months, a lot of grilling is going on. Inevitably, the men will surround the grill, drinking beer and comparing and contrasting opinions on the precise specifications for grilling!!

Oh, no! I'm starting to think maybe I duped myself into MORE work, when I was so proud of myself for figuring out how to operate the darn grill! However, DH can always be persuaded to tend the grill if I send him out there with a book and a cold beverage. Maybe he needs one of those "BBQ Stud" aprons....

Jewel - You say you spray the racks with cooking spray...I have tried doing the same but my food always always sticks. I have used foil, cooking spray, etc. but nothing seems to work for me. What am I doing wrong? That's one of the reasons why I don't like to grill because I don't won't to be faced with my meat sticking to the rack.

Hubby does the grilling...like lindrusso, I do all the other cooking, so that's his job! Packy, you might want to try rubbing whatever you're grilling with olive oil. DH does that and doesn't have much of a problem with sticking.

I'm with Lorilei- I grill veggies, he grills meats. I bought hubby the BBQ boss from PC. I told him now he can stab or flip things and open his beer at the same time! I don't think he'd wear the apron or I'd get him one.

He is the main griller, but if he isn't around for whatever reason, I have no problem taking over.

My husband used to do all the grilling -- truth be told, I was a little afraid of the grill. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Then one night about a year ago, when he wasn't feeling well, I decided that I could take over (I didn't want to waste that marinating chicken). Since then, we've shared the grilling duties. And, I'm glad that I learned to do something I thought I couldn't do.
