BH&G has a Christmas cookie issue with some Santas decorated with dyed egg yolks which is painted on prior to baking -- at least that's what I am gleaning from the directions.
The pictures look lovely -- very shiny and glossy.
Has anybody ever used this decorating technique?

I used to do this all the time with my kids. They had a wonderful time. I bought inexpensive watercolor brushes used just for that. They come out beautiful.
Yes, we started with Easter egg cookies using a tuna-sized can with the bottom and top cut out and bent into and egg shape for the cutter. It was really fun to paint the designs on them.

So is the final result as glossy and pretty as the pictures.
The egg yolk paint does bake to a glossy finish. You need to have a good bit of coloring in the paint to get a strong color -- but I think mine turned out pretty much like the pictures (except one time when the colors were a bit pale).

Yes, they are beautifully glossy. I sometimes topped mine with a bit of sugar as well. They're just pretty and they allow you to have really intense color without adding the sweetness of icing.
