I grabbed a bag of mixed fancy nuts at Trader Joes and it turns out they are raw as well as unsalted.

I want to use them for the Nut Bar cookie recipe which was posted on the bar cookie thread -- Should I bake the nuts in the oven first? If so, do I oil then or just toast them? Salt them?

Thanks.

If the recipe calls for unsalted nuts, I wouldn't salt them or oil them, just put them on a baking sheet and bake them at about 350 until they just start to turn color a bit. How long it takes depends on how many nuts you have, but I'd guess 10 minutes or so. It shouldn't be much different than toasting walnuts or pecans. Good luck with your recipe.

If it calls for salted nuts, you can coat the nuts with a little bit of melted butter, then sprinkle with sea salt. Roast at about 300 degrees until they become fragrant. I do that all the time.

I use raw nuts all the time. I think it may depend on the recipe what yoy may have to do to them to get them recipe ready. Most recipes just call for nuts, and that means raw to me.
