View Full Version : What should I do with my Chocolate Fudge Pie?

My MIL and FIL are coming to spend the holidays with us. They were supposed to come down today and leave on Monday. In an effort to be "Johnny-On-the-Spot" I made the chocolate fudge pie yesterday that we were to eat for dessert tonight.

The problem is, they live in the Nashville, TN area and may not be able to travel today or for a few days due to the winter weather that moved in last night.

So, besides the obvious "eat it" what should I do with my pie? Do you think it would hold for a few days in the refrigerator? (They're planning on heading down as soon as the roads allow.) The pie is in a pie keeper in the fridge now. OR should I freeze it?

Sigh! This goes under the "best laid plans" category."

If there isn't either whipped cream or meringue on top, I'd be willing to bet it would freeze respectably. Probably the best way to do it would be like a cake: put it in the freezer until solid, an hour or two, then wrap tightly, drive as much air out of the wrappings as you can, and overwrap in foil.

I think it would be fine, and it should thaw enough to eat in just a few hours when you need it. If it stays in the fridge more than a day or two, that kind of pie really starts to show its age in my opinion.

Hope your family-in-law have a safe trip when they finally go for it. And that your winter weather isn't as horrifyingly nasty as ours. We got a dump of nearly a foot of snow this morning, and it was ripping bits, I saw as I walked to work, out of the bottoms of more than one car whose driver was foolish enough to brave the roads.

Thanks CompassRose. Especially for the detailed freezing instructions. I'll do it! Just talked to MIL. They have snow AND ice. There are so many accidents on the roads that the police can't keep up. They'll see how the roads are tomorrow.

We want them to be safe, but BOY did we get a lot of food into the house in preparation for their visit. It is just my DH and myself. Guess we'll have to see if we can't invite some friends over to enjoy the 3 bone rib roast I've got sitting in the fridge that will need to be cooked tomorrow or Saturday.

Sorry to hear you've gotten such a bad storm. AND you're out walking in it. Is that something you normally do, or is it just because of the storm? Where I live, the city would shut down completely if we got a foot of snow.

Eh -- pretty normal for this area, though this is earlier than we usually get this kind of nonsense (apparently we're having an "average" winter this year, while they've been milder, shorter and warmer than average for the last half-dozen years. There've been years recently when I wondered if there'd even be snow for Christmas -- no question this year!)

I do walk to work a lot -- I should every day, but I'm lazy/late too often. But this morning there was no way I was taking poor Grishilde (my Volvo) out on the street -- our side roads weren't ploughed at all (if you didn't know where the roads were, there was no difference in the foot deep snow on the lawns and on the roads -- interrupted with deep ruts from the few intrepid cars -- which were, as I say, shedding parts and fluid whenever they hit particularly large ruts going the other way!) And as I walked, only the main street down the middle of town had been properly cleared and salted! So even though I had to shovel my eyelashes when I came in, I think walking was the better choice...

Schools are closed today, but the only time I remember everything truly shutting down was during the Mighty Storm maybe seven, eight years ago? No, must be more than that, because I was still living in "the other city" stuck to the south side of this one, and had to walk all the way home, because the buses weren't running! The snow was waist-deep in places. Incredible. We're in the edge of the "snow belt" here, but still!

I hate winter. The only thing about Canada (most of it) that I loathe almost entirely without reservation.

I'm having the same problems - my sister and her DH have been stuck at the Newark airport since yesterday (destination: Ohio). I've heard that we had record-breaking snowfall since yesterday. All I know is that there is snow up to the windowsills and a 7-foot drift against the garage. It's a mess, but the roads are finally clearing up. My DH runs our local road department, but he also has to drive the salt/plow truck, so I haven't seen him since this whole messy storm started.

Anyway, I had such wonderful plans for what we were going to eat! And now I have a ton of food, and no idea whether the family is going to make it here at all.

 I really hate this! I feel so bad for my sister and her husband. They may end up just flying home.

CompassRose, if you're having an average winter this year, I'd hate to be there for a really bad one. Glad you were able to make it in safely to work. (Albeit a little snow covered.)

I kind of like my weather baby bear "just right." Can't stand the really hot weather or the really cold weather. I guess when you live in a place that has winters like you do, you're better prepared to deal with them. Hope things let up a little for ya'll.

Tholbrook, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister and her DH. How awful to be stranded at an airport. At least my inlaws are at home. I hope they are able to make it to your place for at least some of the holiday. and to top it off, you haven't seen your husband either. You poor thing!

I guess it is just a mind set thing. If I had planned on it just being my DH and me, no problemo. I was just really looking forward to having his parents down here. I was using their visit as an opportunity to try a lot of new recipes. fortunately, all of the meat for the meals is in the freezer, except for the rib roast and it's a whopper. We'll probably try to see if a couple we're good friends with would like to join us tomorrow if my inlaws can't make it.

I got the rib roast on the 20th and the butcher said it would be fine in the fridge until Friday or Saturday. Do you think I could still throw it in the freezer tomorrow if our friends can't come. I really want for my DH and myself to have a special dinner for Christmas but it would be a LOT more meat/food than we could eat.

Hope your sister and DH get there and that you are able to prepare some of that yummy food I know you've got planned. I'm just glad everyone is where they are safe. Hopefully the weather will clear for all of us.
