Has anyone else made the Blueberry Turnovers from this months CL? I made them tonight and thought that they were pretty good. The filling is really tasty but the crust is a little bland. Any suggestions for livening up the crust? Does anyone else have a review of the turnovers?

There was one review on this board for the turnovers, but I did a search for you and couldn't find it. The review was tucked in with another review from the april issue. I seem to recall that the person who made the turnovers thought they were quite good.

I think that might have been me. My DH and I thought they were good. The crust had just enough sweetness and the filling not too sweet. Make any sense? We ate them in one sitting, we didn't think they would be good later. I would probalby make them again, maybe using different fillings. Peach perhaps.

yep, it was yours, Hoosier65.

I wonder why I couldn't find your review. I looked for blueberry turnovers in the search function and I even tried spelling it a few different ways.

I haven't made this recipe, but have you thought about just sprinkling some sugar on top of the crust after you're done making them? I've done this for a few things -- it all started with CL's strawberry muffins last summer -- and it gives things a finished look and a sweet/crunchy topping. Just a thought.

I wonder if adding a little lemon-zest would "liven" up the dough. I haven't made these yet but they are high on the list.

I've promised DH that the day I see fresh peaches in the grocery store that I will make these turnovers for him substituting peaches for the blueberries. I think the lemon zest idea is a great one, as well as the sprinkling of maybe a coarse ground sugar on top? Can't wait!

Thanks for the responses. ElanorC, I agree with you that the dough is a little tricky to work with. The first turnover that I made looked like a mess (but still tasted great), but after that I was a little bit more careful with the dough.

Wendy w, thanks for the lemon zest suggestion. It would probably work really well considering that there is lemon zest in the filling. You should definitely make these, they are really good. I hope my review didn't make them sound bad.

I made the Blueberry Turnovers today and thought they were great. Because of the review which thought the dough was a little bland, I added a little more salt than the recipe called for and it helps a lot. We don't like a dessert that is too sweet and these filled the bill. I'll also try again with different fruit fillings. The dough is a little tricky to work with however so they are not quite as easy as they look.
