I located a health food store here in Aiea, Hawaii (Oahu). They had the Fruity Booty, but when I asked about the Pirate's Booty I got a strange look and then sort of a lecture! I was told that it was taken off the shelf because it had "animal by products" in it???? Whats up with this? Maybe because it was a health food store? Anyone else know anything about this?

My mom is trying some of the grocery stores in her area so I can try it when I go home (Washington St.) in two weeks. If she can't find any locally, we are headed to the Trader Joe's in Everett. I want to try it out before buying a box of it at their web site.

Bosunswife: There is a Trader Joe's in Burien, if that is closer for your mom.

If you really crave Pirate's Booty, they have it in all of the Jamba Juice stores here on Oahu. They have the snack size bags for $1.25, which I only buy if I am really craving it.

Once in a while my mom sends me at TJ's care package from WA with several bags of Pirate's Booty. Do you ever think we will get TJ's here?

Houston is the 4th Largest city in the US and it doesn't have a TJ's...what's up with that?

Keep up the TJs in Houston talk! Maybe they will listen.

A little bag at Jamba Juice should be enough to find out if you like it enough to buy a box. Happy hunting!

According to Robert's Gourmet's website, here are the ingredients. There is cheese and buttermilk, but what other animal products, I don't know.

Ingredients: Rice, Corn Meal, Canola Oil, Aged Cheddar Cheese (No Fat Milk, Salt, Cheese Cultures, Enzymes), Whey, and Lowfat Buttermilk

Ohh! There is a Jamba Juice by Pearlridge Mall. You know I will be heading over there after the gym tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

From everything I have heard, there won't be a TJ's here on Oahu for a long time. Not a priority on the TJ's list. Thank goodness we will be retiring from the military back to the Pacific Northwest in about four years.

I'm guessing the animal by-product they are referring to could be rennet. Rennet contains an enzyme (and on the packages it is only listed as "enzymes") that helps cheese coagulate. Rennet is often produced from the lining of calf or cow stomachs. Don't mean to gross anyone out here, but this is one reason many vegetarians (and all vegans) don't eat cheese.
