There is a show on PBS tonight about the American language and dialects. I know that we have had a lot of threads about how to pronounce certain words...might be interesting.

Here (http://www.pbs.org/speak/) is more info on the show.

I'm not sure what I had on yesterday (it was background noise as I was doing something else) but they were discussing this show. Thanks for the link because I missed when it would be on. It sounded interesting.

I've already "reserved" the tv tonight to watch it! I read about it somewhere (newspaper?) and it sounds interesting. Being a teacher, I'm looking forward to checking it out.

All those on the board who can't understand how to pronounce "Don" more than one way should watch too! :D :D :D ;)

Ah, DH understands this one all too well as that's his name! When he went to college in VA (from NY), he learned this first hand.

LOL! What was the other word that people were having trouble with hearing two different ways?

(btw, I can hear the difference between Don and Dawn) ;)

Oh, there are lots of words that people say the same in CA that I say differently with my fading Chicago accent.

Caught and cot
Dawn and Don
Erin and Aaron (I say these the same, need a NY'er to hear the difference)

I'm sure that there are more out there if I think about it

Thanks for the reminder. I read about it on Sunday, but forgot.

This show is simply fascinating! I wish I'd known about it earlier so my education cohort could also watch it with me. :p

And what's with them saying the Columbus dis-PATCH? I live here and say DISS-patch. :p (Then again, if you look at "Midland," I'm technicaly not from that area, coming from Cleveland.)

I was going to watch and realized it was 3 hours long. I decided to TIVO it and watch it in "installments" at a later date.
