I know there are a lot of fans of The Lovely Bones on the BB (myself included), so in case you hadn't heard...

Peter Jackson has confirmed that his next film will be an adaptation of the book The Lovely Bones.

With King Kong set for release in December, rumours have been circulating as to what the Kiwi director will turn his attention to next.

In an interview with a Lord of the Rings fan magazine, Jackson and co-writer Philippa Boyens confirmed they will team up again to turn Alice Sebold's bestseller into a celluloid reality.

"One next project after King Kong is The Lovely Bones," said Boyens.

"We feel comfortable with each other. I am sure there will be other projects we do separately but at the moment, as long as it works, we'll keep doing it."

When asked about his filming agenda after King Kong, Jackson also said it would be to make The Lovely Bones.

The story is based on a 14-year-old girl watching from heaven as her family copes with her rape and murder. She narrates the story as she watches the turmoil they go through. She is also able to observe the man who murdered her and the path his life takes.

The book, published in 2002, has sold millions of copies worldwide and has been praised by critics for its unusual perspective. It was described by the New York Times as "an uplifting book about the abduction and murder of a young girl".

Wow! Not sure how I feel. How about cautiously excited? It will be really interesting to see how they get it to work.

Me too. It'll be interesting to see if the movie can make me cry as much as the book did. I wonder who they will cast...:)

wow - I think this one has to be handled very carefully in order to pull it off - and I guess Peter Jackson is a good start. Casting will be key. Hmmmm....

I agree about the casting. I can't really think of anyone and I think I would rather see someone unknown in the role. The role of the parents, though, hmmmm. I think there could be some good possibilities there...

I just wonder if they will alter the ending at all, because there is that piece of it (without giving too much away) that leaves you just a little unsatisfied with the outcome. I was ok with that because it really fit the rest of the book, but I know some people didn't like the book as much because of that. Movie audiences (and studios) tend to like to tie up everything with a nice red bow so no one has to think about it after wards.... I certainly hope they don't do that in this case.

It will be interesting to see how it is done though.

Prior to Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson did a movie called "Heavenly Creatures" - I think it was Kate Winslet's first major role. Anyway, it is based on a true story of these two young teenage girls in 1950s New Zealand who have an intense friendship and end up killing one of the girl's mothers. ??!! Yikes, anyway, I think the film received a lot of critical acclaim. So, he has experience working with delicate subject matter.

Heavenly Creatures was his first "non-splatter" movie, and is very very beautiful. The imagery is just amazing. So that's the first thing that came to mind when I read about The Lovely Bones. I'm pretty sure he's likely to handle it well and not turn it into some lame, light-weight "big name" spectacle.

I haven't read the book yet, :o but I am proud to say that the writer graduated from the very prestigious writing program at the university where I work. :)

I'm all of you. I think he'll do a good job based on Heavenly Creatures. I'm not a LOTR fan (ducks to avoid tomatoes).

Have you read her other book Lucky? That was powerful! I wanted to jump inside that book and give her a big hug!

Oh, Lucky was so well written. She's so good at making you feel other's emotions.

OK, well, you don't even like Viggo?!?! that's all I'm going to say on that subject.

I think Lovely Bones could make a really powerful movie. Not one I'm going to see now that I have a daughter but nevertheless.;)

I love Aragorn! DD now has a life-sized cut-out (or "stand-up" or whatever you call them) of Legolas in her room. It was a Christmas gift from a friend; said friend is now her new best friend! Thing gives me a start when I walk by her room sometimes.

If you like Karl Urban, check out Xena Warrior Princess reruns -- he played Julius Caesar. DD loved Hercules and Xena, and is a fanatical LOTR fan -- she recognized many actors from the TV shows in the trilogy! Peter Jackson probably recruited all of the actors in New Zealand for the trilogy.
