ok, one of my best friends who happens to be a fashion bug with a lot of money has given me a coupon for a shopping spree with her for a new pair of jeans to celebrate the loss of my baby weight!
now, she recommends 7 for all mankind and citizens for humanity. the only thing is that she and i have completely different body types.
that's what brings me here. i wanted to see if any of you have experience with these brands, and if so, what's your take on them? do you think they'd work for a long-legged (34-36 inseam), waist not much smaller than hips, usually size 12, 6 foot me?
are there any other brands that you'd recommend?
i'm sure there was a jean thread in the past, but i guess it can't hurt to have a new one, right?
thanks for your help,
greta

Congrats on losing that baby weight, Greta!
My advice won't get you a new pair of jeans since I am 5'3" and have a short inseam, but I do know that it helps to try on many different brands of jeans. The cuts really vary and that matters more than brand, IMO. Have fun!!!

Greta, I have tried on both brands of jeans with no luck. I'm 5'9" and about a size 10. I just felt like the "low rise" was far too low. I felt like it accentuated my middle area----well, like man love handles. Certainly try them on, but don't feel bad it they aren't 'the one'.

thanks jessica.
i'd imagine we have the opposite issues! unfortunately, shopping for me is usually as bad as tweezing my eyebrows. i'll try to have as much fun as possible though. that's why i'm trying to do as much research as possible before hand.
i'm not even sure we should be investing this kind of money in a pair of jeans since i want to start TTC asap.
hmmmm beachbum, after your description of them, i think i may have the same complaint...how was the length on you?

My brother's girlfriend LOVES Seven for all Mankind (different from Sevens, just to clarify) and Citizens of Humanity. Seven for all Mankind have a fabulous pair with Swarovski crystals on the back pockets ... *sigh* Their sizes go up to approx. size 12 but I find that their lengths tend to go long - then again, I have short legs. Have you checked out Diesel?

LOVE LOVE LOVE Seven for all Mankind jeans!!! Before I got pregnant I lived in mine.....then switched to a pair of Citizens of Humanity maternity jeans, which are equally as fabulous. Both are spendy, but so worth the money. There's a huge difference in fit and quality compared to let's say Gap....I'm short as well, 5'4, and both tend to be way too long, but taking them to a good tailor solved that.
Congrats on loosing the baby weight!!!! I'm cautiosly hoping I'll be able to fit into my Sevens again some day:-)

Lately I have been using LLbeans relax fit and Medium tall They are very comfortable and they fit me well The waist area a bit loose but its ok. For Xmas DH got me the LL Bean Lycra ones. Now those are very snug and they do fit good. I also like the Lee stretch jeans (comes in different colors) I buy tall and I do have to shorten them a little. If I don't get tall then they fit weirdly. I absolutelly don't like jeans low rise I mean the really low ones I think unless one has a perfect figure they make your behind bigger and they just don't look ok I have seen plenty of girls wear them and the "love handles" or bellies hang out (not flatering at all)

I love 7 jeans. They're definitely more expensive, but if you consider how long jeans last and how often you'll wear them, they're a bargain.

I love my "Seven for all mankind" jeans....there is a difference between them and other brands, I used to think my Gap Long and Lean were the best, and I still love them but not as much! They have a website... www.sevenforallmankind.com ...which gives some info on the different cuts and styles. I'm sure Citizens and Marc Jacobs and the other pricey jeans companies have websites too...it helps to see which styles are the super low cut and which aren't quite as low...have fun, there's nothing like getting back into blue jeans after a baby!!

I'm not super tall but I do wear heels with jeans so I like them long. I've not had good luck with Sevens but I love love love my Joe's Jeans (I got a thinner denim fabric that is beyond comfy) and if you're looking for that long lean look but not so low-risey, look for Kasil jeans - similar cut but designed with a slightly higher (no thong showing!) back.

I have a few pairs Citizens of Humanity jeans and I love them (although they do get stretched out after wearing them a few times, which bugs me to NO end). I am tall and long-legged (and also pretty thin), but the jeans are still long enough for me to wear heels with. I have a different brand jeans (Polo or Banana Republic) that I wear when I want to wear tennis shoes.
I also have a pair of Sevens that I like equally as well. They haven't stretched out quite as much as my Citizen jeans though.

I am 6 foot and a size 10 with a 36 inch inseam. I don't have an hourglass figure and have long legs so if jeans come up to my actual waist I look like a goober.
The only jeans that I have found so far are GAP jeans and Old Navy "just below the waist" jeans...these both fit and feel GREAT!
I have never heard of 7 or the others...I have to check them out! Do they have there own stores or are they sold in Dept. stores?

So, we've heard rave reviews about four kinds of pricier jeans -
Seven for All Mankind
Seven
Diesel
Citizens for Humanity
Can anyone give me price ranges for these?
Thanks!

I'll have to check out these designer jeans. I have Old Navy below the waist bootcut jeans right now. The denim on those stretch out after you wear them once or twice. I like GAP jeans, but I haven't bought any because I was losing weight and they would just fall off in a month or so.
I don't like Liz Claiborne (when is she going to get into the 21st century?), and I haven't found Ralph Lauren that fit well--the bootcut jeans have such a low waist. Calvin Klein are a little hard to fit me as well.
Jean shopping is like bra shopping, you have to try on EVERYTHING, and you must be in the mood. (go to the food court and get an Icee and a cookie first--you'll need your strength ;))
Once I find jeans that I love, I get several pairs.

I've seen Seven Jeans (same as Seven For All Mankind, I believe) at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. The style I like costs about $135, but the range is $80 to $170.

Citizens of Humanity jeans are basically in the same price range as Anna posted for Sevens. Although, I have to admit I have never seen either brand below about $110. They sell them at Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and lots of upscale boutique-y type places.

I hope you make it through this stressful time. Really, I know it's very difficult when you're tall, and gorgeous, and skinny (after a baby no less) and you have rich friends who want to buy you expensive jeans. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.:p ;) :D

I saw Sevens on the street this morning right on the corner of where I work for $40 :D :D

A word of caution... you may not want to buy expensive jeans if you are planning to use them for everyday style wearing. I work full time, but since my twins were born (they just turned two), but pants have averaged 4-6 months before I wear through the knees. I didn't realize how much time I spent crawling around and was surprised when it first happened. I haven't had holes in the knees of my pants since I was a kid. I usually wear Levi's, Docker's, and other department store brands, and I have put holes anything that I wear regularly!

Scuze me? $110?? Really? Ordinary people spend that on a pair of jeans? Wow. I think I need to get out more. :D When I saw "pricey", I was thinking "okay, they're around $50." I'm sitting here laughing at myself. I am so out of the fashion loop with my $20 jeans. :D :)
Enjoy the shopping trip!

The most important thing about jeans for me isn't the length (I can always get them shortened, and usually do, since I am but five-four), it's the rise. Of which I have the world's shortest. The hipster trend has been a huge boon for me -- it means jeans don't cut into my ribcage.
When I was overly skinny, Gap jeans were perfect-- they're very straight up and down. Now that I've reacquired a butt, and thighs, I just purchased a pair of Sevens. (It was very sad to go into Gap thinking I'd got it in the bag, and go out again after a totally unproductive dressing-room session.) Mavi and Parasuoco and Lei have also been good to me in the rise-fit area. Calvins, Levis and Lee are always a total loss. The pertinent seam would be somewhere round my knees... which is a fashion statement I suppose, but not one I'm looking to make.

you crack me up!
(and just to set the record straight for those who haven't met me--i AM tall, but the gorgeous and skinny parts are debatable!).
thank you all for your input. i am clearly not a fashionista since i never heard of the high-end jeans out there...
i'll be sure to post a report of the horrid shopping experience!

Yeah, that's why I like the Seven jeans. They hang around the hip bones -- just low enough to show off my lower back tattoo and sexy midriff piercings. ;)
Just kidding. I don't really have a lower back tattoo (or sexy midriff piercings), but the Seven jeans are extremely low rise. And since showing lower-back and beyond is way high on my list of fashion no-nos (at least for thirty-something mothers), I have to buy longer shirts.
Still, the Seven jeans are great for people who don't like things tight around the waist.
Jeanne, $40 sounds like a good price for Seven jeans, but you have to be careful. I found a pair for $50 at Stein Mart. I tried them on, but even though the waist size was the same, the cut was crazy and the length was ridiculously long.

I recently went jeans shopping at Nordstrom. I saw the 7 jeans but couldn't bring myself to try them on-if they fit great I would have to buy them, and I couldn't really afford them! I ended up with a pair of Halogen jeans-nice, but but no so pricey!
Good luck!

I don't have a lower back tattoo or sexy piercings either. (I'm still working on the tattoo design...) But see, that's it -- Sevens, with their low rise, actually come to just below the belly button on me -- not extreme at all. World's shortest rise, honest.
$40? $50? Sigh. I paid -- hm, what was it -- $110 Canadian for my Sevens I think. And even Gap jeans are sixty or seventy dollars regular price.

How about Eddie Bauer (comes in long length and are not low-cut) for $35 and spend the rest on chocolate, manicure and a massage? THAT's what moms need....

Not to mention Sevens run small anyhow. I try not to think about the number in mine... but it is larger than the numbers in any of the other pairs of pants that still fit me. Yumiliatin' -- specially when the jean-store saleschic could've been slid under a closed door like a letter.

Well I have to throw in my vote for my favorite brand of jeans....Lucky. Here's the website http://www.luckybrandjeans.com/
They have tons of styles, and I'm particularly fond of them because they have jeans that actually fit girls with a butt and a litle waist...and they have several "not-so-low" rise jeans...nice enough that I can wear them to casual Fridays and not feel inappropriate. Try the Easy Riders is you're looking for a "suitable for mom" pair. :)
You can find them at actual Lucky stores, the Buckle stores, Nordstrom's, and probably a couple of other places I can't think of right now. Prices range from around $75-100, and they definitely last! I still have a pair from high school (making them over 10 years old)...now whether or not I can button them anymore is another story... ;)

Me, too. I have been fascinated by this thread and the knowledge that people are paying more than $100 for a pair of jeans. I love clothes and I love to shop but I have never paid more than $30 for jeans. I guess there are probably boutiques here in NH that carry hip and expensive jeans but I'm too cheap to shop there. I know we are vastly deprived by not having a Nordstrom's within a 200-mile radius. I will have to look for all these cool jean brands when I am in FL next month ... now I am curious as to how much better I could possibly look in $100 jeans.
Happy shopping, Greta -- what a fun and generous way for your friend to help you celebrate. :-)

I think it depends what part jeans play in your wardrobe...they are huge in mine, not just for casual, I choose nice jeans to go out in, to wear with heels, to feel dressy in. That's how I managed to talk myself into my first pair of expensive ones, and I've loved them so much I feel justified to get another!!!

I have several pairs of $150ish pairs of jeans but I got every one of them at designer sample sales (yes, they are authentic) for between $30-$50. Considering my "knock around" weekend jeans I get at Abercrombie & Fitch for over $50, I have no problem paying that for designer jeans. I don't buy them because of the label, I just like the fit and style and am lucky enough to have access to great deals like that. I don't think I could do it otherwise.

As for me, jeans are like bras. I'll pay whatever it takes to fit my short little rise, overly developed quads, weird waist-hip construction and whatever while looking passable and not getting bucket-y in the back when I sit down. I only ever have one or two "good" pairs of jeans on the go at a time, though, so it's not too terrible really.
I've never even seen a thirty dollar (Canadian) pair of new, adult, regular-price jeans. Even Dockers and Eddie Bauer sell for fifty or sixty dollars a pair here... if they fit me, which they don't.

Seven for all Mankind jeans retail around $150.
Sevens are a little less expensive, usually running about $100.
Lane Bryant has recently started carrying Sevens, running anywhere between $70 and $90, and in most of the Lane Bryant sizes.

if i was shelling out the money for the jeans, i'm not sure i would right now--it's only about priorities at the moment.
that said, in general, i wouldn't be opposed to spending the money. i've spent money over the years on jeans that just don't look very good--they make do, but they aren't the most flattering. if i could finally find a pair of jeans that was totally flattering and fit me in the length, i'd definitely buy them for $150!!! this is probably a result of the fact that i can very seldom find things to fit right, and are off-the-rack, or on sale--clothes and shoes (size 12 foot).
this is why i never shop, i hate shopping, and i rarely have the latest in fashion.
i'm not very hopeful that any of the designer brands will work for me. i'm sure i'm a plus size in the designer world!
it will be interesting to see if what translates into a size 12 for them, fit this size 12 body.

I was going to make the EXACT same recommendation. I need a 34-35ish inseam and I want a lower (but not LOW) waist. The Old Navy "just below the waist" are perfect... and they come in both a stretch & a no-stretch version!

Bumping this old thread up -- I'm in Greta's position without the sugar mommy. :D But I want to treat myself, after losing my baby weight, to a fierce pair of jeans that aren't on clearance, and thought I'd see if there were any new brands to take a look at. I have a long inseam, too, and a completely flat butt (*hate* all the extra fabric that usually sags around my behind).

I am giving a second thumbs up to Edie Bauer jeans (although I have a pair of old navy that also fit pretty well). Greta - I am 6'2" and have had three babies (although I am presuming too much that your tummy might be as loose as mine!) I found the super-expensive-trendy jeans like sevens sit too low and are often not long enough. I have found that EB size 10 tall jeans fit perfectly. Long enough (I have a 35" inseam) and you can get boot cut with a slightly lower waist. And now that I know what cut/size fits perfectly, I get them from their outlet website for $30 or so! Their Vashon chinos and cords also fit me really well - lower in the waist (but not too low!) and long enough.

I'm 5'7" - long legs but not long waisted - so I hate buying any pants.
