My DH and I often go in search of the sun in January. For family reasons, we are not doing so this month. It seems the perfect opportunity to try some new things.
Today, I went snow-shoeing for the first time. It was WONDERFUL and I loved it! In the coming weeks I plan to try snowmobiling and ice-skating for the first time. I also plan to try cross-country skiing (which I have done a few times) again.
Do YOU have some things you plan to try this winter? Physical activities? Intellectual? Whatever?

Good for you, Kay - that's great! I've only been in snow a handful of times but have always thought I would like to give cross-country skiing a try.
Since I'm not athletic and don't live near snow or ice, my idea of a winter sport is to slog across town in a downpour, snug and smug in my GoreTex parka and boots! But I know what you mean about "new things": Back in September lorilei posted about things to do in the fall, and I confessed to have failed --once again-- to go blackberry picking in the summer...hoped to hit a fall target or two. No real goals for winter, though I'd love to make the Beef Bourguignon from "Barefoot in Paris" and do a hearty winter dinner. But for whom?? (I've long held that I would like to adopt an elderly neighbor I could cook for!)

Kay, that's so great!
Had we stayed in PA that was on my list, and I was actually pricing snow shoes when we decided to move to South Florida:cool:
Not much outside activity I can do down here except walk on the beach, which I'm getting ready to do in a few minutes ;-}
But I am looking for a flute teacher, planning on doing some mosaic work, checked out the local Yoga Studio, and am begining to write an article to be published ;-}

I've finally worked up the courage to take a Women on Weights class at the gym, and I'm taking a sewing class at a local community college. If I could ever get in, I'd take the class on cooking seafood at the local gourmet market, but there is a wait list.
The one time I tried snow shoeing, I loved it! Maybe that will be my next goal...:p

Snowshoeing rocks! Glad you tried it and enjoyed it, Kay :)
I'll have to give some thought to new things I want to experience this winter. Great thread idea!

Thanks for your encouragement! I had just about forgotten the pleasure of mastering new physical activities.
When I was in my late twenties, I had a summer where I started back-packing and learned to water-ski. I had never thought of myself as a physical person, so this was very satisfying. In fact, I concluded then that learning to walk, etc. is wasted on toddlers as they cannot appreciated the intense delight brought by mastering something new.
Congrats and good luck to all who are stretching themselves in whatever way this winter!

I have wanted to learn to crochet for years now. A couple of women I know have offered to teach me(including my aunt). But a good friend's father passed away a month or so ago and I thought it would be nice to go visit with her mom,bring a bottle of wine and have her teach me. I'm sure she would enjoy it as much as I would since she has asked many times when I plan on coming over.
I have also wanted to try Pilates too. Maybe this winter.

Kay, good for you! I would love to try snow shoeing and cross-county skiing! I am not really an "outdoorsy" person in the winter but I would love to try those two things - at least once.
One of my new year's goals is to learn to knit. Our local knitting shop has Thursday evening classes starting in February. I am really looking forward to going to a class!

I can't say that the winter inspires me quite as much as the fall (good memory, Canice!)... but I do have a list of indoor activities I hope to finish before spring rears its head.
I need to reupholster the chairs in my dining room, for one (it's a set from my great grandparents, and the seats need a bit of work).
I also have quite a bit of patching and painting to do -- but I'll have to wait for the inspiration to hit for that.
Somewhere around March, I'll be shopping around and starting seeds for my vegetable gardens -- and that's always inspiring.
If we get a nice batch of snow in the near future, I'm also planning to drag DH outside to build a snowman :D
Otherwise, I fear there is little more than a LOT of snow shoveling in my future... ! ;)
