Ok...my dad was not a huge cook...his idea of cooking was to make something from a box or cad and adding as much hot pepper as possible! However, he baked incredible bread...he would do all sorts of breads but my favorite was his hearty 7 grain and his bread with sausage in it. Of course we loved the green pancakes on St Patrick's Day http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My mother is a pretty great cook. We are portuguese and her portuguese cooking is amazing! Lots of yummy seafood and pork combinations. Every Easter we always get individual Portuguese sweet bread with the eggs in it http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

When we lived in Hawaii my Mom took Chinese Cooking Courses. For years, I always asked for the many course meal on my birthday. It took her all day, but she would always comply. Very Yummy http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Here's a similar thread from a while back that might interest you as well....it's a bit different in that Danielle was asking what recipes your mom/grandmother make that you just cannot make as well yourself.

My mom makes a really good broccoli/chicken stir-fry in peanut sauce, but I LOVE my dad's chile relleno, which he makes for breakfast on Christmas morning. Yum!

My mom has never been much of a cook but she used to make these really good bar cookies called Raspberry Chews and a few other dishes that she learned from my grandmother such as: stuffed peppers and tomatoes, chicken and rice(with a lemon egg soup), stuffed artichokes and lamb stew.

Like greysangel, my dad was never much of a cook and liked to open boxes and add packets. However, he used to take me to some really good places to eat like the Pantry in LA and some good delis and seafood places.

I love just about anything that my sister in MI makes, she is a great cook whose cooking skills exceed mine. She could probably teach. My poor local sister depends on me to take care of her in that way.

The only thing that my poor mother cooks that I simply LOVE and for some reason cannot duplicate, is her Walnut Pie. Essentially the same recipe as pecan, but with walnuts instead. Pure Heaven.

My father has NEVER cooked, not really even BBQ, but for some reason he is the only member of my family that is allowed to make the Potato Soup. It's rich and creamy, and simmers nearly all day. I can usually smell it in the driveway when he's got a pot on.

My grandmother cooked everything to death, because she would generally have the meal ready two hours before we sat down and everything dried out. BUT: She still makes the best pie crust I've ever tasted, and makes a Thompson Grape Cobbler that you'd sell your first born child for! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My dad was the cook in our family. ALWAYS traditional Chinese dishes. When I was a kid, though, the only thing my brother and I ever wanted was American food -- burgers, pizza, hot dogs. Nope. Always Chinese food. Now, I miss it. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif I can replicate a few of his recipes, but no one makes gyoza/potstickers like he does. Mmmmmmm! I always have a list of special requests when I go home to visit!

Most things my mother made, I can duplicate in one way or another... but her peanut butter cookies... ah! They were good!

And I can't seem to make anything close -- even with her recipe!

Since my dad retired he cooks a good bit at home. He has really perfected "their" spaghetti sauce. Yum.

My dad made hamburger and potato tacos. He made these with fried corn tortillas. The potatoes were boiled, mashed and cooked hamburger was added. We would top them with lettuce, heated tomato sauce, hot pepper sauce, and kraft parmesean cheese. We would then see who could out eat the other. Sometimes I won. I having been making these for myself and family for many years now.
I use salsa instead of hot pepper sauce and add cheddar cheese to the combination. This is the only recipe I've carried from my immediate family. My father is no longer alive, but I always remember him whenever I make these and I enjoy them every bit as much as I did then.

It's funny because the first things that come to mind are my mother's chicken-fried steak, and my father's barbecued brisket and ribs. And I don't eat meat anymore.

My mother also makes the world's best blintzes.

My mom's desserts are always fantastic- she goes all out, especially when entertaining. We jokingly call her "Martha!" My favorite is Chocolate Sin. My dad was the grill master, so anything he cooked was grilled- and wonderful!

My mother is a wonderful cook. The things she made when I was a kid that I loved were: ribs baked in bbq sauce, onion quiche, green enchiladas, cheesecake, pesto, sausage bean chowder, and knaukwurst (sp?) with saurkraut and homemade applesauce. Now that we are both more aware about cooking healthy she doesn't really make these any more (except the pesto and the sausage bean chowder, which she makes with turkey sausage). She also makes a fabulous salad out of red lettuce, red onion and feta cheese with this amazing garlic vinaigrette. It is out-of-this-world delicious (although you should stear clear of people for a couple days while the garlic and red onion gets out of your system). Oh, and how can I forget her fabulous ham?! She uses Julia Child's recipe. I actually only like ham the way my mom makes it--it probably also has to do with the fact that she gets her ham directly from a friend who raises and cures them himself. Fabulous.

My dad also is a great cook (or used to be, I haven't eaten anything he's made in a long time). His specialties were homemade soups, homemade ice cream (pumpkin and peach were my favorites), and homemade ketchup. And making a huuuuuuuuge mess in the kitchen, which my mom cleaned up. I don't think that's what brought about the divorce, but I'm sure it didn't help. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I love my mother's roast. I normally cannot stand the taste of beef, but her eye-of-round roast with garlic is the best thing I can remember having.

My mom is the best cook. I can honestly say I like everything she makes. I don't like lamb and mom made it once while visiting and it tasted good. I always love her arroz con pollo and red beans...Mmmm! and mom makes an outstanding cheesecake!

My mom's chocolate chip cookies - I can't duplicate them, even though she uses the recipe on the back of the bag of chocolate chips!

My dad makes excellent chili. It has become a tradition that we have chili for dinner on Christmas Eve.

I guess my favorite foods from home are comfort foods - definitely not low cal.

My mom made this wonderful seasoned gravy with hamburger in it and served it over mashed potatoes or rice. Its something I ask to her reproduce now that she somehow can't. Don't ask me why.

My dad makes the most wonderful cheese omelets. He has so much patience in lifting and letting the runny eggs slide underneath the cooked portion. All light and fluffy and cheesy when they are done. Mmmm. Maybe he'll make me one when I get home in a couple of weeks!

My Mom's Matzoh Ball soup is the best EVER.

My Dad's French Toast was really good too, every Saturday morning.

They are all comfort foods! My mom's potato salad, apple walnut coffee cake and lasgna. My grandfathers pancakes (he used to make them in all different shapes- hearts, snowmen etc).

My grandmother's rolls. It's the only thing she makes that I still like.

My (now deceased) great aunt's chocolate chip cookies. She took the recipe to the grave with her--no one could figure out how she made them so good.

My dad's spaghetti sauce. He is one of those bad cooks, who thinks he's good--but his sauce will grow hair on your chest--it's awesome!

My mom's chocolate cream pie. It's pretty standard--but it always tastes better when she makes it!

My mom makes a traditional German dish called Rolandin (sp?). I keep forgetting to get the recipe from her and I really want to try it!

My dad doesn't use recipes so his dishes are hard to repeat. He has won many a chili-cook off and last time he made it he had a little bit to much beer in him and let the recipe slip! When I made it, it wasn't quite as good as dads, but stil pretty good. For my wedding I got the family's secret bar-b-que sauce and now that the weather is warmer, I can't wait to try it. He is also the best at grilling. I don't think I will ever be able to be as good as him in that area!

My mother is a very good cook, but her cooking is traditional southern cooking - almost everything is fried. So, my favorites are her fried chicken and chicken fried steak (both of which she serves with mashed potatoes and cream gravy, of course).

My dad did not cook very much, but he could grill a FABULOUS steak. I would have put his steak up against any restaurant's (and they they have some great steak restaurants in Dallas). He passed away 7 years ago, and I miss him, and his great steaks, very much.

My mother made the best deserts!

My father cooks wonderful hamburgers, then always asks, "These aren't very good are they?" wanting us to tell him they are absolutely delicious!

Both my grandmothers make the best dressing. One makes cornbread stuffing and meatloaf to die for, and the other makes squash stuffing and wonderful pies-- they are awesome!

My great grandmother used to make wonderful Matzoh ball soup! I loved when we went to visit her, she had always made a pot of it for us!
