I need a healthy (hopefully kid-friendly) food for each of the following letters:

H, I, K, Q, R, U, V, X.

Can anyone think of foods that start with these letters? Any help will be appreciated!

How about...
R-Rice (brown-is that cheating?)
Q-Quince or quinua (butchered that spelling. Forgive me!)

I'm sure people will come up with a lot better ideas than I can, but the following just popped into my mind:

K: Is kiwi too un-kid-friendly? Or kumquat's might be fun. (I saw some at the produce market on Sunday)

I'm having a hard time with the other letters. All I can think of for R is Rice Krispy treats!

Good luck! I'll let you know if I think of anything else!

What a fun teacher you must be!
H--ham, hamburger (meat is still part of a healthy diet, especially for kids, and leaner types of both are readily available these days)

Honeydew-one of the few melons that my sons ate at a very early age

Iced Fruit-another name for sorbet (guess that's sort of pushing it)

Kabob-any sort of veggie and lean meat or fish and loads of fun for kids to make

quiche-eggs & cheese in a pie!

rice-even my pickiest eater eats a bit of this

raspberries-my favorite fruit

vanilla wafers(?)-certainly kid friendly and not too bad for you as cookies go

As far as U and X go, you might have to look into another language!

H: Halibut, ham, herbs, honey

K: Kiwi (my kids love them); Kabobs (it's a stretch)

Q: Quiche, Quesadillas

R: Radish, Raspberry, Raisin

V: vegetable!

H, I, K, Q, R, U, V, X.

V - veggie kebobs/skewers (you might have to take the veggies off the skewers after presenting them to the kids)

R - sticky rice formed into balls with maybe something in the middle (kids like shapes?)

Q - q-tip sticks (pretzels or bread sticks with cream cheese on each end, or cheese cubes on each end)

That's what I can think of for now.

Oh, how fun!

H - hominy or hazlenuts

I - ice cream!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif (low fat with extra calcium http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif )

K - kasha, kale, kidney beans

Q - quinoa

R - rice (brown, of course http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif ),raspberries, raisins

U - Udon noodles??

Okay, the 'x' definitely has me stumped. Good luck! By the way, do you mind filling us in on the details of this project? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
V - Vidalia onions? (sorry, that's all I can think of!)

Well, Ive been working on a couple of different children's books for awhile... one of them involves these foods and I have been stumped for awhile on those letters! Here's hoping we can find an "X"!

Kim http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Thanks for the help!

Maybe you should define kid-friendly for those without kids...quince, quinoa...you might as well list quatre epices...most kids won't know any of them!

I guess I wasn't necessarily thinking of "kid-friendly" as something familiar, but rather things that simply taste good -- they may as well learn about those foods somewhere! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Having raised 3 boys, worked in a school and learned the hard way that what "tastes good" doesn't necessarily work with kids and especially if the name of the food soounds weird!

U-unleavened bread...pitas, tortillas, naan

Kim, if you are using these for a book is it necessary that the food be something kids like to eat? Could it be food kids are familiar with or that sound cool. Also, I assume if it's for a book than for 'u' ultimate chocolate cake or ultimate tacos (or ultimate anything) wouldn't work. Otherwise, that's one other thought I had (I feel that I am slightly redeeming myself for my xanthum gum comment).

I am currently thinking of young children being the target audience, and I am relaxing more all the time of what I want....I started with just fruits and veggies and I am quickly expanding to foods kids would think taste good!

You guys are sooo sweet to help me. When I make millions from my book (NOT) I will remember all of you! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I have the Alpha-Bakery Children's Cookbook that I ordered from Gold Medal Flour. Its recipes are in alphabetical order. Here are their recipes for those letters; let me know if you want any recipes posted.

H - Honey Bee Cookies
I - Ice Cream Sandwiches
K - Kart Wheels (kind of like thumbprint cookies)
Q - Quick Cheeseburger Pie (you could do Quick anything, really)
R - Raisin Apple Muffins (or just do raisins)
U - Upside-down Pineapple Cake
V - Veggie Bites (Veggies coated in a flour mixture and baked)
X - "X-tra Special" Celebration Cake (again, you could do "X-tra Special" anything)

Have fun.

Kim, have you tried going to www.epicurious.com (http://www.epicurious.com) and checking out their dictionary? Maybe that would help with the harder letters.

I looked on the Cook's Thesaurus site and found this:

X.O. sauce = X.O. chili sauce Notes: Asians pour this sauce over noodles and seafood. It's made from dried anchovies, shrimp, and chiles.

This was the only thing I saw besides Xanthum Gum that was listed anywhere under food.
