View Full Version : Poll: What one thing won't your dh (or SO) eat that you REALLY wish they would?

For me it has got to be mushrooms! He just refuses and being a rather picky eater myself I have decided to cease and desist on the matter *L* But it sure would be nice. Have you ever noticed how many CL recipes call for mushrooms? And I love them! Oh well, when he goes out of town I have myself a little mushroom-fest!!
This one is easy for me. It's definitely pineapple! I can't even slip a little pineapple juice into a recipe without being called on the carpet. So, I'm reduced to having pineapple whenever I can away from home.

NUTS! He doesn't have a nut allergy, he just has "nut issues." Nuts in sweet things are always bad. Walnuts are always bad. Peanuts in spicy dishes or peanuts by themselves are fine. Do you know how many recipes have nuts?!! Lots of nut crusted stuff and dishes with almonds, pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, etc. He also has an issue with whipped cream. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif
Coconut is a close second. He likes curry dishes a lot and I have been trying to find more to make for him (surprisingly peanut curry is okay...complicated nut issue....see above). It is surprising how many curry dishes call for some type of coconut. I have been known to sneak some in when he isn't looking. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

That would be anything in a peanut sauce. He doesn't like things too peanutty. And there are soooo many good recipes that have a peanut sauce. Although, he will eat it. I just can't go overboard and cook it alot. Oh, well. It's been awhile...so guess what's for dinner tomorrow nite!!!!!

Anything sweet in a savory dish...
In other words, he wouldn't like any main dish recipe that called for dried or fresh fruit.

Love this topic! My DH does not eat oatmeal. And as I've posted several times, it is my favorite food. At first I could not believe that someone could not like it. I would make it all different ways, but with no luck. He just doesn't like it. Too bad for him http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I've gotten my husband to eat tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini and some other veggies he was picky about even after college... however, no matter how hard I try, I can't get him to eat shrimp! I see so many incredible recipes in CL that I wish I could make (some I do, I just eliminate the shrimp) but he won't go near any type of crustacean! And to think his family is from Maine... he's the only one with a shellfish aversion.

My husband will try and eat just about anything (so I guess I'm really very lucky!!), but he does not care for eggplant or cilantro. He will try a dish with those ingredients but typically will not care for it much. That can be frustrating as I love both of these!!

Broccoli-he thinks the only good broccoli is that that is still at the grocery store. He also doesn't like most squash and barely tolerates bell pepper. Funny though, he likes most other peppers like jalapen, Anaheim, banana peppers, etc. Go figure! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

If my husband had his way, he would live on popcorn and gatorade! I love to cook, so his diet is a bit mroe varied than that...generally he will eat whatever I serve, with a few exceptions he is adament about...he will not eat squash, sweet potatoes or tofu in any form! He also does not like chicken on the bone.

Olives, my husband doesn't like any kind of olives. Once in a while I will buy a jar of green olives w/pimento and eat them "all by myself".

04-03-2001, 02:47 PM
My DH will only eat button mushrooms- forget anything more exotic such as shiitake or portobello- although I manage to slip them in... Tofu is a no-go, period.
Actually, I'm pretty lucky- I'm hard-pressed to think of anything else that he doesn't care for.
Now, what foods DO NOT appear on your table that DH would like to see more often? He wishes we'd eat red meat- I just never buy it- so he cooks himself steak when I am out of town.

My BF and I actually have very similar taste. I guess the one thing I eat that he doesn't is tomatoes. I love them and he won't touch them. It's frustrating sometimes when I want to throw some into a recipe, especially with Mexican food. Oh well!

My DH also doesn't like fruit in his meat dishes! I have over the past 22 years made a dish anyway and let him pick around the fruit (just like our three sons!). And he doesn't care for cooked carrots but that doesn't stop me either! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

RobinC, my DH has "nut issues" as well. He likes them, just not in any type of baked good. To me, banana bread just isn't the same without nuts! I feel badly but I have to say that it really doesn't slow me down. He'll eat whatever I make; he just whines a little when there's nuts in it.

My husband and I have very similar tastes... in fact, our preferences keep melding together in bizarre ways the longer we live together.
The one thing, however, which he has a really hard time eating -- anchovies. The poor, hairy little creatures just don't LOOK appetizing to him http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif He cringes every time I buy a can of them (or a tube of paste) at the supermarket. Fortunately, he'll eat them as long as they're disguised, or dissolved strategically in a savory sauce... else we'd be out of luck with some of the best Mediterranean food out there!

I can't limit it to just ONE! My list includes: greens, blueberries, and most especially ..... SEAFOOD of any kind! The "won't touch it list" is actually a lot longer, but we've made incredible progress over the years that we have been married, and this most non-adventuresome eater has tasted and even learned to like a whole HOST of things that are new and good for him! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif He refers to my healthy cooking as eating "roots, nut, berries, bark, and twigs," (Do you remember Euwell Gibbons?!?!), but actually thinks I'm the best cook around! When we're on a trip and have been eating restaurant food for a few days, he always declares that he's eager to get back to my "roots, berries, bark, and twigs!"
As much as I LOVE seafood, though, I do miss the fact that he draws the line there, and I must cook two seperate meals for us when those cravings hit.

Vegetables! He is like a kid... I put them on his plate and he will push them around and leave them. A few weeks ago I had made an especially appetizing chocolate cake, and told him that he could not have any till he finished his brocolli. My picky eating 4 year old son cleaned his plate when he heard that, Daddy had to be told twice.

Tofu and Tempeh! Though they are not that great I wish I could get the family to eat these for the health benefits but it is very tough. He also is not crazy about pasta which I could live on!

My DH is very adventurous with food--(sometimes *too* adventurous; oh the roadside 'dives' that he thinks look interesting!) But my frustration is that the man does not like to eat Breakfast, aka My Favorite Weekend Meal! On Sat. or Sun. mornings, I love walking to town, sitting outside the cafe with a big bowl of latte and a wonderful scone or coffeecake. Most of the time, I just forget about it and don't go...but sometimes Latte Madness overcomes me and I have to go---with the dog! LOL--*he* will eat anything/anytime!

My DH also doesn't eat nuts... specifically walnuts and pecans! MY TWO FAVORITES!!! He CLAIMS that these two types of nuts give him cold sores!!! NOW, I am not quite sure of that... 'cause sometimes I SNEAK IN ground walnuts and/or pecans and he doesn't get cold sores!!!! (SHHHHHH! Don't tell him!!!!) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
But, thank goodness he will eat almonds, macadamias, peanuts, cashews, etc... ANY others. Just not MY 2 favorites.

He won't eat broccoli, salmon and most fish. He has started eating tilapia and cod, but it has to be HIS Suggestion!
Everything else he LOVES! Enjoys all other fruits and veggies, loves rice (I don't) all meats and poultry and of course all breads and desserts! I am lucky!

His tastes have changed so much since we've been together. His vegetable repetoire used to be corn and french cut (and only french cut) green beans. Now he loves almost all veggies.
If I could get him to eat one thing, it would have to be seafood. He won't touch it. He'll grill fish for me outside, but he hates it.

Any kind of squash (except the appetizer kind at restaurants that is battered and deep fried) and brussel sprouts. Also, he is very picky about some herbs. Every time I put too much rosemary in anything (which doesn't have to be much) he scrunches up his nose like a five-year-old and whines "what herb did you put in this!" You'd think since he hates rosemary so much, he would be able to detect "what herb" I put in. However, I can't complain too much, he pretty much eats whatever I put in front of him. Oh, one more complaint. If he doesn't particularly like a new recipe I have tried, he won't comment on it then unless I specifically ask him. But, if I make it again, he wants to know why I made it again. Go figure!
[This message has been edited by woodsl (edited 04-03-2001).]
My husband also has issues with mushrooms and dishes using peanut butter.
What I really wish he would do is eat spicy foods! Every time I make a dish that I think is great he acts like the top of his head will blow off. He asks that I NOT use chili powder in chili, or cilantro or red pepper in Mexican dishes. To me, that negates the whole point of making them in the first place!!

My husband is so picky. When I first met him he wouldn't even eat pizza - he thought it looked like....oh never mind. He does eat pizza now. He is very skeptical about any new recipe, especially a healthy one from CL. He doesn't like many spices or sauces. He doesn't like many ethinic foods like Chinese or Mexican. He loves meat and potatoes! I mentioned on another post that he tried the Chicken Fr (sp) with Orzo and had to admit he liked it. Guess I just have to continue preparing new recipes. Some he will like and some he will not. I just get tired of making the same old stuff.

I got really lucky! My DH likes nearly every food. The only food he cannot eat due to allergy is seafood, which is fine and dandy with me, 'cause I can't stand the stuff! The only thing we can both eat is tuna, so we love grilling tuna steaks.
The only food I try to make for myself when he's out of town is any hot food made with a peanut sauce. Peanutty Noodles or anything like that, just doesn't ring his bells. I love the stuff in limited quantities, so I've decided to turn this into a cold dish that I can take for work so he doesn't get his panties in a fluff at dinnertime! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

FRUIT! He won't go near the stuff. This has been going on since he was in a high chair. He would spit out the bananas and love the creamed spinach. His mom started finally force feeding the fruit for a main meal and saving the veggies for dessert.

I realize this is a really stupid question, but I see "DH" all the time and don't know if it's darling husband, **** husband, or what? I'm very lucky that mine loves just about everything and is very easy to cook for. However, he won't eat anything with ham. He'll eat bacon, but not ham. He'll eat pork in Chinese food, but not ham. spicy food!... he likes spicy food (dont get me wrong) but not nearly as hot or as often as I!... I swear I could (and have!) eat spicy food for every meal!
That and he's not a big fan of BBQ... I have to get my southwestern food on the fly!
1)Tofu (once he had it fried-that was Ok!)
2)Mushrooms (they do bad things to his stomach, let's just say I don't even try anymore)
3)Chicken w/ tomato - in any form (that was all I knew how to cook when we first were married, I guess I served it too much)

DanaSD-Congratulations!! Have you set a date yet? We did the day we were engaged.
When we first met, he wouldn't eat very many things except for meat and potatoes. His choices have expanded tremendously EXCEPT for the dreaded: anchovies; (he can't taste the paste, yet), all olives, sardines (I don't like them enough to care), and the two things I really love are oysters and mussels. I have previously posted how when he first tells me about his upcoming trip, my mind goes to oyster stew and mussels, is that spelled correctly? All in all, I consider myself very lucky in this department!!

Eggplant and any kind of squash. If I make either one, I have to make something else for him to eat. Oh, and broccoli rabe- loves regular broccoli, though.
He also is not crazy about the Peanutty Noodles (one of my favorites) so I have to just make that for myself. He eats just about anything else- and has actually eaten grilled eggplant and squash on occasion. He will, at the very least, try everything- even when I say "I know you won't like this".

Spinach and pinapple. I love spinach on pizza and in veggie lasagnas, but he won't touch the stuff. And I can't order a Hawaiian pizza because he thinks fruit on pizza is weird.
I think it is interesting what people like to eat and what there spouse eat as well. It is interesting because I know someone that grew up in Kentucky and does not like fried chicken, potatoes, gravy, and is very finiky. The only somethings SO will not eat period. Like some raw veggies. Chicken on the bone, for example growing up the parents and said it was chicken and it was really rabbit. Cilantro is sometimes a no no as well. Come to find out why people don't like the taste, is they have an enzyme that breaks down the cilantro and tastes like soap. It is similar to why some people don't like aspargas. You have a gene for it to smell or not. Things you learn in school. It is funny growing up down here in Miami, you think i would like seafood. In my family i am the only who cannot stand the stuff.

Oh I could go on and on about this topic...
DH will not eat: any vegetable other than corn, any fruit, most fish or anything else he thinks is "healthy" food. He has gotten better since we've been married, he used to only eat fried foods, now at least I've gotten him to read labels and watch fat content a little. But I think what frustrates me the most is that he won't try foods. He just decides he doesn't like them. He always complains that his mother was not a good cook (I've never had a bad meal at her house, I think that she is just an unimaginative cook) but I think he's just using that as an excuse to not try new foods. Basically I cook a meal and if he doesn't want to eat it, well, then that's his problem. Since we are only together Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon (work issues - until we move anyways) I do cook at leeast one meal which I know he'll enjoy.

I posted a similar thread a few months back and I would have to say beets! My husband is very adventurous and will try lots of things, definitely is concerned with eating healthy (he keeps me on track!), and is definitely not a meat and potatoes kinda guy so I can't really complain but I do love my beets! I just make them for myself when I'm really craving them.

But he likes cinammon, cloves and ginger when they are in main dishes - even likes cinammon candy and candied ginger - GO FIGURE! Reminds me of a story.
One time there was this man sitting and watching a football game, eating olives straight out of the jar. His son who was sitting nearby was observing him and went over and asked if he could have one. The dad, happy to oblige, said "Sure" and gave him one. His son ate it and continued to watch him. The son, after a few minutes, asked for another, to which his dad, again, obliged. The son watched for a few more minutes and then asked for another. His dad gave him another and the boy ate it, only this time, the boy burst into tears. The dad was totally confused and asked him..."Son, what on earth is the matter?" His son looked up at him with the saddest eyes and said..."You're eating all the good ones!"

I'm surprised no one has mentioned casseroles! My husband likes to be able to recognize exactly what his food is. Casseroles are too homogeneous for him. He calls them goulashes, but when he says it, it sounds like GOOlashes (as if it were made of slime or goo!). He even crinkles his nose like a little kid.

DH is the world's biggest guinea pig. He eats almost anything I put in front of him. He's eaten snake, crocodile, rocky mountain oysters, sweet breads, tripe, emu to name a few (and likes 'em).
What he doesn't like? He has a hard time with brocoli and asparagus. He will eat both grilled however.
