Knit Wits, I need help!
I don't have an LYS near me and I am having a horrible time trying to figure this one thing out. In Stitch and B*tch, for the windy city scarf it says to knit something like 45 rows, split and knit 15 etc. How the heck do I split it and knit. The purpose is to kind of put a hole in the middle and I am racking my brain and cannot figure out how to do this. Could someone please try to help me?

Hi Linsleyd,
What you do is just knit half way through the row, put the remaining stitches on a stitch holder, then turn the work around and knit back.
continue to knit this partial row for 15 rows. Then I imagine it tells you to do the same with the 2nd half of your original row. Place the first half of the row on a stitch holder, remove the 2nd half of the row from the stitch holder and back on your needles and knit 15 rows. Once you have knit the other half row 15 times, you place all the stitches back on the needles and rejoin the two sides together to make a complete row again. I hope this make sense.

On a side note, I never do it this way. I don't like the unfinished "stretchiness" of the vertical hole. I always make a horizontal button hole in the middle of the row, instead. I'm sure you can find directions in a basic knitting book or even on teh web for making a button hole. It's not difficult, but would be kind of hard to discribe here. It's just a matter of binding off a few stitches in the middle of the row and then increasing them back on the return row.

Good luck!
Renée

It's so hard to "explain things" with only words. When you get to the point where you split (after you have worked 45 rows), knit across 15 stitches, drop your yarn. Get a new ball of yarn and tie it onto the next stitch (stitch number 16) and knit stitches 16 through 30 with this new ball of yarn. Now tou are knitting with 2 stands of yarn-stitches 1-15 with one, and stitches 16 through 30 with another. Next row purl 1-15 with one, and purl 16-30 with the other-continue this for 10 rows. Then the next row use the strand you start the row with and just go straight on across all 30 stitches, ignoring the added stand (you will go back and clip it off and work the tail into the scarf later. Hope that helps.

I know this one! Only reason I do is because I had to have someone explain it to me. I have not actually made this scarf.

Ok, what you do is pretty simple. When you are knitting, when you hit stitch 15, you pretend that is the last stitch, leave the other 30 stitches on your needle, flip your work and work your way back across the 15 stitches. Keep doing this until you have the length you need always have those other stitches on your needle. Then you do the same thing on the opposite side. I think you would want some kind of stitch holder to use for the side you completed, but I'm not sure on that. Once the sides are even, you knit the entire row again.

Hopefully some more experienced knitters will chime in. I know I've got the first part right, but I'm kind of making up the part about what to do withe first side when completed....:o

Hope I helped in some small way!

thank you all! I *think* I have the general idea. I had bought stitch holders thinking that might be the way to do it but I just couldn't figure out the logistics. I can't work on it tonight, but I should be able to get some done Thurs or Fri and I'll let you know if I got it figured out. Renee, I had also thought of binding off but I thought that might be too difficult when this is supposed to be a simple scarf. We'll see which way works better for and thank you all I really appreciate the help! :)
