View Full Version : Poll: Mayonnaise, or Miracle Whip???

I was on the Cooks Illustrated website, and they have different recipes for egg salad (plus good instructions on how to properly boil an egg). How timely, with all of the Easter eggs that will be left over!

Just got me thinking - there is a very thin line between mayonnaise and salad dressing lovers. I personally was raised on Miracle Whip, and I will choose that almost always over mayonnaise. One exception is a dill dip that I make for round bread. Even in potato salad or macaroni salad, I prefer fat free Miracle Whip.

I know this will send many of you into shock, because there are purists who will only use mayonnaise in their dishes.

I'm curious - where do YOU stand? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Mayonnaise only. Except I'm having problems with accepting ff mayo in my diet. I'm going to finish off this jar and then go to light. Why oh why can't they make things fat free without adding so much sugar http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif

ooh- add a third category for those of us completely grossed out by both! I think it's a texture thing- creamy, eggy, sweet/sour- I'm getting the willies just thinking about mayo/MW

sorry!!

Mayo-only! Once bought Miracle Whip and ended up throwing it out! When living in the UK, it was always salad cream (yuk) learned to sandwiches without mayo or broke down and bought Mayonaise at the American Store for some ungodly price!

I was born and raised on Hellman's Mayo! I do however use the Light version now. My DH was used to Miracle Whip until I converted him.

Gotta cast my vote for Miracle Whip.

Growing up it was Hellman's now it's Hellman's low fat. Although, we don't really use it too much anymore.

Best Foods (which, I believe, is the west coast version of Hellmans) Light.

For me, Miracle Whip is nasty! Blech!

We have a Kraft light user here, DH was a MW user and then I do believe I've converted him http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

(growing up on the east coast I grew up on Cains, can't find that anywhere anymore, thats how I became a Kraft user)

Miracle Whip is too sweet/tangy for me. I love Hellman's---was raised eating it---- and now use their low-fat version.

Grew up on Miracle Whip. Currently we use and like the Best Foods Mayo. Tried the Light, but don't like the flavor.

Sounds like we need to try the Hellman's Light.

We avoid mayo whenever possible to save
calories. We're big fans of dijon.

foodiedelite (and mandarin2j):

Hellman's and Best Foods is the same thing. They're marketed under two separate names and sold as Hellman's on that side of the country and Best Foods on ours (west).

You're not weird, Em!! I too, love Kraft Fat free. I don't eat it straight off the spoon, so when it's mixed in to tuna or chicken salad, or on potato salad, or in cole slaw or salad dressing, etc., I can't tell the difference at all (and neither can anyone else I serve it to).

But to answer the poll, I grew up on Miracle Whip, but now I like mayo better (can't stomach the full fat stuff, though! BLECH! Grosses me out)

I ABHOR Miracle Whip. I don't even like mayo that much. I go through spells where it really grosses me out. It is best on a juicy burger with onions, mustard and the works. I read the Cooks Illustrated tips about tuna salad sandwiches, and I will try it -- I haven't had them for years because of a combination tuna/mayo aversion (although I used to love it).

I grew up on Dukes mayo (Southern brand). But since I can't get it in Wisconsin, I do Hellmann's. (Bring out the Hellmans, and bring out the best!)

BTW -- anyone ever make the Hellmann's chocolate cake?

I'll bet it just depends upon what you grew up with. I grew up with Miracle Whip--loved it and still do. I think regular mayo is absolutely tasteless. I've even made my own with the same result. For the time being though, to cut down on sugar, I've been buying mayo. I just need to really doctor it up to get some flavor out of it.

Miracle Whip's flavor takes over and adds a sweet note that I don't care for on a savory sandwhich. When my in laws come to visit we have to buy Miracle WHip for them and when we visit them they have to buy the light mayo for us. Picky picky picky.

Hellman's Light Mayo. By the way, it got high marks on a Cooks Illustrated tasting of mayos.
Can't stand Miracle Whip -- too sweet.

Mayo all the way -- and Hellemann's if I have a choice.

Can't stand the way Miracle Whip sweetens everything up so much -- especially in pasta salads. Mayo makes a nice, neutral base that I can accent with herbs... and still be able to taste them! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I was raised on Miracle Whip and will still use it occasionally. It took years but I finally discovered that Mayonnaise is better for sandwiches and my favorite potato salad. My husband sill prefers Miracle Whip so I buy the teeny jars for him and use the Helman's light for me. I think the light has a pretty good flavor, it looks a little odd on opening the first jar, it's shiny, but it tastes fine.

Mayo- I hate that tangy taste of Miracle Whip!! (or Miracle Grip as my sister calls it!)

Hellman's Reduced Fat Mayo or full throttle if I'm feeling naughty- but I don't keep it on hand http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I wonder if it's a regional thing?

I'm another one that was raised on Miracle Whip and for years, thought that WAS mayonaisse! When my best friend in Junior High pulled a jar of Best Foods Mayo (Hellemans in the East) out of her fridge, I wondered what it was! I was a diehard MW fan, and always thought that mayo was too 'eggy' tasting. About 5 years ago I got a pre-made sandwich with mayo on it, and I was amazed! It was so good! I started to lean towards mayo from then on, and have started buying the Best Foods FatFree Mayo myself. DH was also raised on MW and likes it better, so I buy small jars for him, but I seem to like mayo better on sandwiches. In salads, it depends! I do like MW for tuna salad, and I admit to still liking it on that Midnight Thanksgiving Night Turkey Sandwich on White Bread!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Put me in the category of Grossed Out by Both. The *only* time I'll eat either is if it's in cold macaroni tuna salad or potato salad. It has to be mixed with other flavors like onion, mustard, or tuna so that it masks the mayo taste.

Growing up my mom always made macaroni tuna salad with Hellman's mayo, which was good. My MIL makes it with Miracle Whip, and I'm actually beginning to like the taste of it. But as far is putting it on a sandwich, yuck!!! I can't even stand to make tuna or potato salad because the side of it makes me gag. Can only eat it when prepared by someone else.

Fat Free Miracle Whip! Some may thing I have off-kilter taste buds for saying that, but for some reason I don't like the taste of plain mayo. I use Miracle Whip in anything that calls for mayo -- especially with tuna. I think the only time I wouldn't use Miracle Whip is in a few recipes for baked goods I've seen that call for mayo. Somehow I don't think Miracle Whip would taste good in a cake! But in a sandwich or something, Miracle Whip is always my spread of choice!

KValley, I am with you all the way. I won't eat any kind of mayo, even to be polite.

LOVE that tangy zip of Miracle Whip! The only thing I use regular mayo for (and I have to say that I don't use either very often) is on burgers and to mix with ketchup for french-fry dipping. For potato salads, tuna, and deviled eggs, it's gotta be MW!

I guess I'm weird, but I love fat free mayo! (Kraft or Hellman's low-fat, which has only 1 gram)
If anyone remembers, I have a condiment fetish http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I grew up with Miracle Whip and for a long time, that was the only kind I'd eat. Mom liked Hellman's but me, my brother and my dad would just cringe. Now, it doesn't really matter, Miracle Whip, Hellman's, store brand (whatever's on sale <g> ) I don't use it a whole lot, though, so I've been trying to decide if I really don't care about the taste anymore or if it's because I can't hardly afford Miracle Whip anymore.

I don't usually use either in my potato or macaroni salad, so I suppose trying it that way might make up my mind for me (g)

Best Foods/Hellman's (regular http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif) around here.
It's the only one I buy, and I will never substitute anything with my Best Foods Mayonnaise, not even Kraft! Miracle Whip is one thing I will never eat, or buy..

I don't like either! Don't have any need for it. My coleslow is made with vinegar and oil. I put lettuce and tomato on all my sandwiches, and eliminate all the fats! Even my dh is eating them this way, he used to put lowfat margarine on his sandwiches.

I really don't use much of either one and when I do I pretty much use them interchangably. I usually buy the FF stuff for use in egg/noodle salads and DH will eat nothing but full fat Kraft Mayo - He hates Miracle Whip (but since he won't eat egg/pasta salad I opt for FF in those).
