I have a recipe that calls for a little bit of sake. I bought a bottle of mirin. Is this acceptable, or did I just waste my money on the Japanese equivilant of "cooking wine"?

Mirin is seasoned sake...Mirin usually contains sugar or corn syrup or whatever they are using to sweeten it these days.

Sake is like a fine wine that uses rice to make it instead of grapes :)

Look at the recipe and see if sugar is required...it usually is. I would then just leave out the sugar and use the Mirin.
I usually buy only sake and if it calls for Mirin I add a bit of sugar to make the recipe closer to what it ought to taste like.
Just my 2cents.
