Just wanted to update as there was the extensive discussion of the Macy's sale which was actually this weekend.

The 5 quart stainless Belgique saucier was $9.99 plus an additional 10% off if you used your Macy's card. I passed on it as I have a small kitchen and I wasn't sure exactly what I would be cooking in it.

I did buy a 6 quart stainless Dutch Oven for $20. I had been lusting after the $200 All Clad Dutch Oven but the Belgique line is really good quality so I will be happy with this for awhile and my investment was pretty minimal when I decide to go for the splurge.

They are on line and ship anywhere:D

Consumers Reports rated their in house line (Belgique) was one of the most highly rated cookware lines -- above Cuisinart and KA with respect to the non fully clad moderately priced lines.

Blazedog -- is the 6 quart Dutch Belgique as well?

blazedog

Yes -- it is Belgique and a really nice heavy quality pot -- stainless lid which I like much better than glass as it is much more versatile -- can go into the oven to any temperature.

I will be deflowering it today with the East Indian Braised chicken :)

Was it just a weekend sale? I would love to check it out but won't be able to get to Macy's until Tuesday or Wednesday. (Snowed in today!!!)

Just weekend sale but you could order on the phone from your nearest Macy's -- just ask for the housewares department.

Macy's is also on line but I don't know if the prices reflect weekend sales.

It's a MONTH LONG sale!! First thing Friday morning I got online to check it out. So many things I'd love to buy! Then, as soon as the store openend, I called to see how long the sale lasts for. It's a BIG home sale that goes til the end of February. I'm without a car (dh's died and he's using mine until his gets fixed even though he works several hours a way and it leaves me stranded. Good thing I work at home, I guess) so am hoping to get my car back in the next few days so that I can actually go look at all the pans in person and narrow my purchasing choices down.

I get so many circulars trying to entice me in for each weekend that I begin to lose track.

It might be that the ADDITIONAL 10% off if you use your Macy's card is only through the weekend.

FWIW, I got my friend the 14" nonstick skillet and toyed with buying myself another one in case they stop making it but then realized I was being paranoid:D

LOVE the Dutch Oven and can't believe it only cost me $18 -- I've been stalking cookware for over a year and this one is really great -- fast on it's way to become a much used pot. It's squatter than my 8 quart pot but still big enough for pasta, chile and boatloads of soup as well as being able to be used as a Dutch oven and go from stove top to oven :)

Chocolate Rose -- thanks for the wonderful news! My dh dug my cart out so I could go this morning (state of emergency yesterday, so I couldn't go then) and the freakin' mall was closed!!! I was majorly bummed, only compounded by the fact that I got in a car accident on the way from there to K-Mart. I'm ok -- guy couldn't stop at a stop sign and plowed into me. Luckily my Expedition proved its worth, and I didn't have our son with me either. Just some paint markings on my car, but the guy's car was TOTALED. Amazing. I even asked him if it looked like that before the accident, because I was surprised I got off so easy. That's it -- staying put for the rest of the day. :)

FWIW, the 5 quart saucer was $9.99 at the Macy's store I went to yesterday -- it's $19.95 on line.

On line doesn't have the 6 quart casserole which I actually had never seen before.

The sets are an amazing price now -- $80 -- not that I need or want a set but would be great as a gift for somebody.

Well this is the type of weekend when we Californians get to gloat -- am heading for a brunch outdoors and then a jaunt through the Famer's Market and then some Cosmo's at sunset overlooking the sun setting over the Pacific:D

I am totally tempted to get that 12 piece set!! I've just about talked myself into it. There are a couple of other pieces I'd like, too, so I'm going to wait til I can actually go in and look at them.

I sure wish you guys in the NE could send some snow this way. We are having spring time temps and even our mountain snow packs are disappearing.:(

Are you guys talking about the Belgique Classique or Belgique Elite? Any opinions or preferences between the two?

Thanks!

I did not need to see this thread. I got a $200 Macy's gift card from work for Christmas. :D

I want a second Kaiser square (9x9) and rectangular (13x9) springform pan. I have one of each and I really need a second one - and blazedog - I also thought that I want these before they stop making them so you're not alone! :)

The 14 inch pan is awesome -- my friend said her HUSBAND commented on what an outstanding pan it was :D :D

The Classique. One is stainless steel (C) and the other is Teflon (E). Hope this helps.

The Belgique Elite also is made of anodized aluminum on the outside - I think since Macy's does have nonstick cookware with the matte grey finish (like Calphalon) as one of its Belgique lines.

For those who are interested in this cookware, my circular said the 16 piece set will be on SPECIAL sale tomorrow morning from 9 to 1 PM for $180. It really has a number of very useful items like a 13 inch saute pan which isn't standard in most sets.

There is also the triple bonus when you buy the set -- a wok, 2 or 3 non stick skillets and the 12 inch stockpot.

I don't have the set as I didn't want a set when I started purchasing cookware -- however I do have individual pieces from this line and they are really high quality -- and I LIKE the funky retro look. FWIW, the rounded bottoms provide the same sort of stirrability as a saucier without having to buy an extra pot.

I do believe Macy's offers price protection if you are motivated enough to get to the store tomorrow morning and request the $20 price drop.

I finally got to the Bon today and was all set to buy the 12 piece Belgique Classique stainless set for $91 only to find out that the store is selling it on sale for $129. :( The guy at the store said that the deals online are better because the store is trying to get people to purchase more online. So, I just got home and placed my order online. It's definitely worth saving close to $40!!!

While at the store I did get the 9.5" nonstick stainless fry pan. I wanted one for when my 14" pan is just too big - like for scrambling eggs. I also got the 5 quart Belgique Elite nonstick Chefs Pan. So, I think that I'm all set with the nonstick pieces that I want. Can hardly wait til my stainless set arrives. I really wanted to walk out of the store with them!

And, I drooled very heavily while walking past the All-Clad pieces.;)

OK, I have to figure this out...about 25 years ago I bought
and still use as my primary pans, a set of stainless steel pans
from Jordan Marsh (now Macy's) called Belgigue. This weekend
I went to the Boston Wine Expo and my first stop was the
All Clad counter. She told me about the triple bonus at
Macy's. A friend then emailed me the link and whoa and
behold it's Belqigue. The only complaint I have about my
25 year old pans are that the black handles have oxidized
and seem loose. I wonder if they are All Clad pans in their
former life. The lady at the counter said they have been
making them since 1973. I'm not cheap and have certainly
gotten my use out of these pans but wouldn't it be something
if they had the lifetime warranty!

Blazedog, just checking to make sure I read your post right....the Belgique Classic line can go into the oven, or is it something special about the dutch oven you purchased that makes it oven ready? Thank you! I'm thinking of running over at lunch, then if the prices are better online I'll just come back and order.

Thanks!

All stainless can go in the oven - The Belgique Dutch oven I got has a stainless lid also. Any Dutch oven that has a glass lid or knobs that aren't stainless can't really be used in the oven since these materials generally are only oven safe to 350 degrees.

My Dutch oven is Belgique Classique -- I believe the Belgique Elite is the anodized with nonstick interior.

However, not all the lids are stainless but I can't recall which pots have glass and which has stainless but you can check that out in person.

I didn't see the Dutch oven on line though when I checked last week -- Did they put it in?

:)

Cindy -- I don't believe Belgique is All Clad.

Somewhere in the dim recesses of my brain, I THINK :D emphasis on THINK that I once read that Belgique is an old line from Europe and that Macy's bought the brand (or the name) some years back.

All the Belgique pans sold now have the good construction with stainless riveted handles. They are as good if not better than any of the moderately priced not fully clad pans I've checked out in the past two years when I have been obsessively haunting the stores.

I don't have sets as I purchased individual pieces depending on my needs. The lids on the Belgique are slightly less heavy than the lids on All Clad and my expensive Calphalon but from a practical standpoint, not enough to have any functional problems.

I'm not sure how stainless can oxidize though as it's chemically inert. My old Revereware/Farberware stainless was still functionally perfect after 20 years but the bakelike handles weren't ovensafe and the handles were screwed not riveted so they would come loose and have to be tightened occasionally -- but they served me well for 20 years :D

What are your handles made of?

Interesting how different the prices are country-wide. The 6 quart Dutch Oven that Blazedog can get for $20 was $24.99 here in NJ. The only set available here is the 16-piece set, which once I saw the triple bonus that came with it, I, of course, quickly and quietly succumbed. :)

For any of those that ordered online, how were the prices for shipping?

It actually started out at that price -- don't go crazy:D

There was a special weekend discount with no sales tax (significant in Los Angeles) and additional 10% off. When I re-examined my sales receipt, I realized what the original price was but since I had bought two pieces at the same time, I assumed the total was even and just divided by two.

I ordered the Belgique Classique 12" Everyday Pan (6 quart) a couple of weeks ago and the shipping was $5.
Yesterday I ordered the 12 piece Classique set and the shipping was $10. But, I didn't have to pay tax. So I would have had to pay about that much more (for tax) if it would have been available in the store for the online price anyway. I think that their shipping prices are online and are determined by the total price of your purchase. But, I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly.

And, it really is interesting to see the differences in prices throughout the country! I sure wish we had the same deals that Blazedog has!!

Blazedog, thanks for the info! The black handles on mine have oxidized (not the stainless steel). I don't know what the handles
are made of but they seem to have become more porous, discolored
and slightly loose. I think the heat just got to them after time.
It's amazing though that they've held up so well.

blazedog
02-02-2005, 07:51 AM
Cindy,

Based on the age of your pans and description of the handles, your handles are most probably made of bakelite screwed on.

Most of the cookware sold to consumers thirty years ago had this type of construction. It is probably only within the last decade that the markt has turned to the semi professional style of cookware with stainless handles riveted rather than screwed on.

One of the reasons I upgraded was to have stainless handles which enabled me to use my pots in the oven/on the broiler.

The current line of Belgique has stainless handles as does All Clad, Calphalon, KA and Cuisinart. Although there is still some cookware made with non-stainless handles, I had no interest when I was purchasing new cookware.

I was just on the Macy's website checking out the Belgique deals & they are offering free shipping with a $125 online home purchase through Feb 7th. I just might have to order the 16 pc set now...what with the triple bonus AND free shipping!! Thought maybe others might be interested in this info as well.

I was just over at the website and on page 3 of the Belgique line they have the Elite pans on "closeout". Are they not going to be selling those pans anymore? I bought one a couple of days ago. I've only used it twice but I really like the pan.

i'm curious about those closeouts, too, because there are a couple of good deals. i don't care if they discontinue the line, i'm just wondering if people have been dissatisfied with them.

Macy's has a pretty good warranty so I wouldn't think quality is an issue.

If they are really discontinuing the line -- and who KNOWS how to decode these kinds of nuances, it could be because sales weren't as expected. These are the anodized aluminum and lots of people prefer stainless steel -- I personally like the anodized aluminum since I don't use a DW for cookware anyway -- and you can't put any nonstick in the DW to begin with :D

Their prior line of nonstick was stainless and maybe they are just reverting -- or maybe this will be an eternal close out :D

I am eyeing the 13" inch DOuble Duty Pan (aka a Saute Pan) at $30 -- I have the all stainless model which is a great pan but a large covered nonstick saute pan especially at that price) would be nice.

well, i finally got to macy's today! i waited because i wanted to hit the annual pre-Valentine's jewelry sale, too. five Belgique items and two beautiful rings (one for DD) later, and i am a happy camper.:D plus, no tax in DE!

two of the pans i bought--the 14" teflon-lined saute pan and the 5-qt. chef's pan--are larger and heavier than the everyday equipment i'm used to; i guess that's why they have those 'helper handles.' i would have bought seven pieces, but the salespersons all said they've been selling out like crazy. i'm going back (to a different macy's) this weds. the 9th; they're having a big one-day sale. i wanted the 6-qt. dutch oven and the 8-qt. stock pot; i may order online if they're still not available.

in all fairness, the Tools of the Trade SS items i bought at macy's about 7-8 years ago are much sturdier. also, i'm now even more pleased than ever with my Revereware, even including the more recent 'all-clad' triple-ply SS & aluminum items. unlike most of you, i love the glass lids for stovetop, but they're all interchangeable, my old metal lids and the newer ones.

--->has anyone else noticed how this newer SS cookware coming out of China (like the current Belgique) has obvious concentric circles/lines in the SS? that's just another reason why i love my older pots more.

Today I told a friend about the great Belgique sale. She was particularly interested in the stainless set I got for $91 (12 piece set). I just heard back from her that it's gone. I went to the website and it is now unavailable and they don't even show the 16 piece stainless set. I hope they are just sold out of these and are not discontinuing the stainless line either.
