Is brisket called "brisket" in the grocery? I searched ours yesterday for such a cut, but couldn't find anything.
Cooks Thesaurus says substitutes include rump roast and bottom round roast, but I don't want a substitute.... Or are these just different names for the same thing? Help!

I actually found a brisket that said "brisket" on it. I was glad because I have no idea either! It kind of looked like a corned beef brisket to me in the supermarket- the same kind of texture and color- which I suppose would make sense.
i say, when in doubt, ask the guy behind the meat counter. every time i've bought brisket, it says 'beef brisket' on the label. sorry i couldn't be more helpful!

Thanks... I went to another grocery and found something called flat cut brisket (?) and am going to use that.... Probably for the beef brisket recipe, Mrs. Reber--it sounds soooo good.

Mightyh- that recipe is good! I tried it thanks to the previous review. Everyone keeps posting reviews from the Complete CL cookbook. I bought it recently and have cooked about five dinners out of it- all of them were good! I hope you enjoy the brisket as well!
Brisket is a long flat cut that whole may weigh 8-12 lbs. I have found whole ones usually wrapped in that vaccum packaging, not the regular meat trays. If you are familiar with flank steak, think of that as baby bear and brisket as pappa bear. Hope that helps.

The whole brisket is what Beth described. What you actually bought is the best cut from the brisket. There is also a point cut.

I use a rump roast for brisket. there's both pork and beef brisket. The corned beef you make/have for St. Patty's Day is also considered a brisket.
