My DH brought home the first mess of morel mushrooms last night, so guess what we had for dinner!? They were sooo good http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/cool.gif
The first ones are always the best. Now I'm off for a wildflower walk in the woods, so will be looking for more. It rained last night so they should be up. This has to be my favorite time of the year.

SandyM, it's never too late. Do you leave neat some woods? They will be a little later coming up in Mich. than hear in southern Indiana, but they are there for sure. Take a day and go look. It's lots of fun.

They're not real common in southeast Michigan - oddly enough, since you're further south than us - but moreso up north. Thanks for the tip though!

All my DH wants with them is bread and butter. They are very rich so you don't need much. Maybe a nice spring salad.

Hoosier--- You are so lucky to be already mushroom hunting. My sister's MIL makes the best morel dishes.
I used to live in Evansville, Indiana and would go through Washington alot on my way to Indianapolis. Do you still have that great Amish store on Hwy 50? We used to buy all our spices there!

Missy- I'm not sure which Amish store you mean but there is a fairly new one on Hwy. 57 called The Black Buggy. It's an all you can eat buffet with gift/grocery store. There are several places around the area. Found a few more mushrooms today (just thought I throw that in)
I'm going to Lake Tahoe this summer to meet up with high school girl friends.

Help! I just moved to Indiana & would love to get some morel mushrooms. Do you think anyone would be selling them by the roadside? I could never pick mushrooms myself. I'd probably accidently get something poisonous & die!

I have never seen them selling by the roadside but I have heard they sell them at some markets in the city for something like $20 a pound. We still need some good rain for them to come up good. Right now they are few and far between in my area anyway.

I live in Indianapolis, but my husband works in Bloomington. So, we'll be on the lookout. Any stores in particular that you've heard about? I was thinking Atlas in Indy might have some.

Julie O, I really don't know any particular store, maybe a farmers market, or Marsh. I go to Bloomington often just to go to the grocery store, much more variety. I go to Indy on occasion, my son lives there. I'll ask him.

Hoosier,
Yes, the Black Buggy was the store I was talking about on Hwy 57, (Hwy 50 is here in Tahoe! oops!) They have (or use to) have good spices in balk at very cheap prices along with bread, dip and wonderful soup mixes. I hope you have a great time in Tahoe this summer! (If summer ever gets here, we have had 10" of snow in the past week!)

Ok, Hoosier65 -- for those of us who *love* mushrooms but have never hunted for our own, you must give us some tips. I have the same fear of picking some strange/bad/ominous shrooms in the wile. What specifically are we looking for?
Also, I live in Madison....do they grow wild here, as well? (I'd guess we have similar climates)

Gosh, how do I tell someone what to look for? I've just always know, my 98 year old grandmother used to take me. You know what a morel looks like? That's what you are looking for. There are others but I wouldn't know how to explain them. You could go to the library and get a book on the subject. I would assume they would be in Madison. Do people not hunt for them there? Once you spot the first one the rest come easier, it's the first one that takes a while.
Missy, Hwy 50 also goes through Washington, and there is an Amish place on it too. The Black Buggy still has everything you mentioned. They do a great business.

We used to go looking for them when I was a kid and we visited my Aunt in the eastern part of Washington State. My dad loves them sauted in a little butter and then served with scrambled eggs. I hate to say this, but I really don't like mushrooms - to me they are a little too earthy tasting. If I have to to be polite, I can choke down stuffed mushrooms, but thats about it.
