I was reading Dear Abby and came across this warning for cat owners. I had never heard of this either!

DEAR ABBY:
Last Easter, an unfortunate incident occurred in our home. I would like to share it with your readers so they won't suffer the heartbreak we did.

Like so many people, I bought an Easter lily for the holiday. My 6-month-old kitten chewed the ends off a couple of the leaves -- and died on Easter morning.

A few days later, I learned from the poison control center that Easter lilies are highly toxic to felines and cause acute renal failure that results in certain death. They are not toxic to dogs or humans.

Several veterinarians were unaware of this plant's toxicity to cats, and my own veterinarian has it listed as a safe plant.

The plant industry should label toxic plants as such on the care labels so that pet owners won't lose a beloved member of their household in such a preventable way as we did. Your animal-loving readers should write to their state representatives and demand that these warnings be made law. -- SUE VON ESCHEN, ROCKFORD, MICH.

DEAR SUE:
Please accept my sympathy for the loss of your pet. Your letter is an important one, because many experts are unaware of the danger Easter lilies can pose to felines. I called the Los Angeles poison control center to confirm what you've written. Cat lovers, listen up!

There is a book out that lists the poisonous plants (sorry, it's in stroage), I purchased it at Petsmart. Had a friend whose cat chewed on her varigated pothos and lost his voice!

MrsReber, thanks so much for that post. I have 5 cats and because I don't know much about plants, I only grow the plants at my office. I have a jungle in the office but no plants inside my house.

Thanks MrsReber! I too didn't know about the Easter lily. I have two cats who love to chew green things. I have one cat that goes nuts when I bring home corn on the cob. I have to husk the corn out of her reach or she would be diving in and attacking the outer green layer. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

MrsReber, another "Thanks" from a cat lover. I have two cats and one of them loves to chew on plants; consequently, I also don't keep any plants in the house. However, does anyone know if this is a problem with all types of lilies.

Mrs. Reber,
Thanks for sharing. And just to let everyone know that poinsettas are also deadly for cats.

Adding another one to the list--
Onion causes renal failure in both cats and dogs, and a new one... raisins, this is for dogs-the ASPCA toxicology is doing a study on this and the lethal dose is ~1/2oz per kg of dog. This is so new that there really is no literature on it. A friend of ours is a vet that had a dog brought to him TOO LATE (2 days) after he ate ~1 lb. of raisins, most vets will say it gives dogs the runs, our friend thought so too, but called ASPCA and they gave him a case # to track it, etc.
Geez, I used to just worry about 'poisons', there's so much more out there http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
