View Full Version : New Month - Anyone Up for a Challenge?

MISSINDI
02-01-2005, 08:08 AM
Since it's the start of a new month, and a clean slate for monthly hits and misses, up for a challenge? To see how many new recipes you can try in a month? I know for me, especially towards the end of the month, I look at my list and want to bump up my numbers more ... not to compete, but mostly because I know if I don't make a lot of new recipes, I'll never make a dent in my "to try" piles. That said, it's a short month, and today's the first. Whaddya say, wanna play? :D

Sure, I'm in!:) Last month I began keeping track of the new recipes I was making (due to inspiration from this BB). So it will be very easy to participate in this challenge!

I'm in. I've got a cool spreadsheet going now - 3 sheets right now, 1 sheet for January, one for Feb, and one of recipes that I want to try - just as a reminder when I am considering what to make!

I am going to be missing a weekend this month (going to FL, whee!), but other than that, I am rarin' to go!

I tried last month, but ended up cooking without a recipe so much. so i will try again this month. Last months total was 6, I think, so as long as I beat that, I'll be happy.

Well, I lose 10 days this month although some of the recipes I've used for frozen meals are new.

MISSINDI
02-01-2005, 09:02 AM
Kayaksoup, I would consider it a personal challenge, so as long as your aim is to best your personal number of 6, you're good to go. I think my number was 18 or 19 for January, so I'm going to shoot for 25 and see.

mrswaz

I'll play!
Dh is away for work this month- and it's a prefect opportunity to try new things without him complaining. I've really been leaning on the "old reliables" since Christmas, so this will be fun.

Editing to add that I don't have a usual new recipe count, but if I tried 2 a week it would be an improvement- so my initial number would be 8 new recipes (I know pathetic, right?)- but I will shoot for more, I think.

Count me IN. I've been wanting to do this, so now is the perfect time. Not much happening in February and I want to try more new recipes anyway!

I'll play, too!!
My count for January was around 23 so I'll try to beat that. :) Hopefully my new pans will be here SOON and I'll have even more of an excuse to try new recipes!:D

I'll join in!

I've been tracking my recipes for about three or four years now. I think I'll try and best my count from Feb 2004 (I'll have to look up the number). I made 13 new recipes in January though, so I can try and improve on that too.

Hooray! I just realized I'm making a new recipe tonight! The Southwest Squash Chowder that was posted on one of the soup threads a while back (at least I think it was a soup thread).

Don't know if I'll beat last months' total - but I can try! This week won't be that much - free lunch today & tomorrow from work, and leftovers in the fridge - but with the weekend coming, I can do a bit more!

I'm making Cheater's Delight (a clementine dessert) and the Beer Cheese Bread from today's beer thread, all going with Stuffed Shells.

Short month and all, but I'll give it a go. Last month's total was 12, so this month I'm shooting for 15 or more. Hopefully, along the way I'll manage to use recipes from some of my as-yet-untouched Xmas cookbooks.

I actually make at least 2 new recipes a day but I'm still new to the cooking game. My challenge should be to revisit all the Repeaters that I never actually repeat!:) On the other hand, after roasting a pepper for the first time last night (I know, nothing to get excited over, but new for me), I was thinking that this month I'd like to tackle a few more firsts. Hmmm, maybe perhaps like Creme Brulee. . .;)

Sad day- why wasn't this thread at the beginning of last month?? :( I only say this because I kind of played this game with myself in January and ended up with a record (for me) of 41 new recipes- I was very proud of myself.

Alas, I don't think I can play this month as I am starting a second job tonight and have training all week from 6-10 :( so no cooking for me. I'm afraid this dumb job (DH is currently unemployed) will have me hanging up my apron for awhile since I'll be working some evenings and weekends.

*Sigh*

I will play, but my challenge has a twist. I am going to see how many new recipes I can make with all of the food we have stocked in the fridge, freezer, deep freeze, and pantry. DH and I are challenging ourselves to spend very little money on groceries this month as we are stocked up for a blizzard and need to get through all that food. I think this would be fun!

Last night I made the Teriyaki Beets posted on the BB, and a T&T brussel sprout recipe from CL, and leftover pizza. Yes, I know, totally weird combination, but DH didn't complain!

I have no previous counts to compare to, so we shall see how this goes!

How does everyone keep track? I find by the end of the week, I can't even remember what I made at the beginning of the week!

Chocolate Rose
02-13-2005, 11:44 AM
I've got 8 new ones in so far this week (17 total new ones so far this month). Definitely trying a new salmon recipe tonight and probably one or two more for tomorrow.

Goin' Coastal, a friend got me this cool "Family Organizer" for Christmas. Each two-page spread is a week. On the left-hand side is a place for your grocery list and "To DO". The right-hand side has space for each day to write whatever you need. And, it has a space for daily menus. I keep this on my desk with my computer (and MC). So as I print out the recipe I'm making at the moment, I write the name down on the menu part of the page. This is the first time I've ever kept track by day of what I've cooked.:D
It's funny since I never thought I'd use this thing. I have a personal/business organizer program on my computer and haven't used a paper one in a LONG time. But, I'm finding it's actually kind of fun.

I have a magnetic clip that's on the refrigerator. After I make the recipe, I put it on the clip, and at the end of the month, I take it and input on the computer. Very easy this way - hope it works for you! :)

I keep track by writing the names of the new recipes I try on a list in my "organization" binder. I have been breaking them down only by month, not by week, so I can only give a month-to-date total. For the first two weeks of February (through tomorrow - 2/14) I will have tried #26 new recipes.

I did make them. They smelled really good while putting them together, but the flavors seemed to evaporate during the baking. Wouldn't make them again, but wouldn't mind finding another recipe that held the flavor. :)

I was really bad about this, too, and worse, I often didn't know where to look when I wanted to do a repeat, so I vowed to keep a monthly list and so far have been scrupulous about it.

Of course, having a Peek-a-Duck journal encouraged me, too! :)

First off I plan my weekly menu (in Excel) and try to stay with it throughout the week. Then daily or every other day I make entries into the same spreadsheet (different tab) on what I make and any comments about the recipe. Very basic and simple.

I do basically the same thing. The advantage for me is that it's so easy to update - I always change my mind as to what I will make! For instance, tonight I was going to broil a piece of fish - but then I remembered that the fan above my oven isn't working - and I do NOT want to have lingering fish smell. So - that line just comes out of the excel spread sheet!

I'm sure I have 3 more new ones from last week, to add to the previous week's 2 makes 5- only 3 short of my initial goal of 8. My only problem is that organization part. Which 5 new recipes did I try? I need to take the time tonight to sit down and write down what I made and my reviews.

I'm thinking yes, in terms of numbers. But how 'bout leaving the reviews for the February Hits and Misses thread? :D

I have Supper Club tomorrow, and 4 out of the 6 I'm taking are new, so that's definitely gonna help my numbers. :D

Well, I added three more for Valentine's Day (in spite of flying into to town at 2:30 in the afternoon, unpacking, and packing to leve again the next morning!). Will be trying at least one more new one tonight!

And for the question about keeping track, I never really did before this month. So, I created a spreadsheet in Excel that is formatted like a calendar, and I put the recipe titles in for each day.
I keep a row of "to-try" recipes going at the bottom. Also, I write if I like or dislike it on the actual recipe, and if they are print-outs, I throw out the ones that I don't like, so I don't accidentally try them again (I hve done this!).

MISSINDI
02-17-2005, 09:32 PM
Made three new recipes today - having Supper Club tonight certainly helped with my numbers. :D One is a repeater, one I'm not so sure, and one is a definite no. I found out that I don't like truffle oil - blech; and, of course, it cost me a $9 bottle to find out.

Missindi, I find truffles are one of those foods you either love or hate. DH loves them but I'm not a big fan. They're too pungeant (sp) for me. We brought back truffled pasta from Rome last month and had it as our Valentine's meal. DH loved it but I enjoyed my sauteed vegetables more ;).

I ended up having a busier month than anticpated so I'm not doing as well in the number count as I had hoped. Oh well! That's how it goes!

Going into the final week I'm sitting at 9 new recipes. My "goal" was to do better than January's count of 13 but I think I'm only going to tie it. I've got four new recipes planned for this next week so well see what happens!

If I go along as I have planned now, I will have made exactly the same number of recipes that I made in January. Oh well. The good part, though, is that with this challenge, I finally got myself to start working with side dishes, instead of focusing only on baking and main dishes. Plus, although I will have made the same number of recipes, more of them are new than I did last month.

I wouldn't mind a monthly challenge either. I definitely made a conscious effort to go through recipes and find ones to try, and then actually make them. I certainly wouldn't try to top myself month to month though- that could get rediculous.

On another note- I actually bought myself a new notebook to list recipes in. I have a section for a list of recipes I want to try, as well as their location (BA, CL, cookbook, etc.). Then I have a section for a list of tried recipes- and reviews. We'll see if I can keep this up.

Here's the pizza recipe. I made a few shortcuts, because I wanted to sit down in time for the red-carpet coverage for the Oscars. :D Next time I make it, I'll do the same shortcuts. I didn't make the dough, but instead used the Thin Crust Pizza from Boboli. I also halved everything (recipe makes 2 pizzas) and lastly, I used already cooked rotisserie chicken. I love the pizza and will definitely make it again - can't wait to have the leftovers for lunch. DH didn't like it, but that's a "peanut butter thing." My stepdaughter loved it as well, and she's a pretty picky eater. I'll be back in a sec with the other recipe.

Thai Chicken Pizza (makes 2 9'' pizzas)

Spicy Peanut Sauce:

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon honey
2 tsp red wine vinegar
2 tsp minced ginger
2 tablespoons roasted sesame oil
2 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp vietnamese chili sauce (or dried chili flakes)\
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
2 tablespoons water

Combine sauce ingredients in small pan over medium heat. Bring sauce to a boil; boil gently for one minute. Divide into 2 portions for use on chicken and pizza; set aside.

Thai chicken pieces:
1 tablespoon olive oil
10 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4 in cubes

Cook the chicken in olive oil over medium-high heat, stirring, until just cooked. Set aside in the refrigerator until chilled through. Once chilled, coat the chicken with 1/4 cup spicy peanut sauce. Set aside.

For the Pizza:
1 recipe pizza dough (enough for two 9'' pizzas)
cornmeal (to keep pizza from sticking)
2 cups shredded mozzarella
4 scallions, sliced
1/2 cup white bean sprouts
1/4 cup shredded carrot
2 T chopped, roasted peanuts
2 T chopped fresh cilantro

Place a pizza stone in the center of the oven and preheat to 500 degrees for one hour.

Use a large spoon to spread 1/4 cup spicy peanut sauce evenly over the prepared dough. Cover with 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella.

Distribute half the chicken pieces over the cheese, followed by half the green onions, bean sprouts and carrots. Sprinkle an additional 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella over the other toppings and top the pizza with one tablespoon chopped roasted peanuts.

Transfer pizza to the oven and bake until crust is crisp and golden and the cheese at the center is bubbly; 9-10 minutes. When cooked through, carefully remove the pizza from the oven. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro over the surface. Slice and serve.

Repeat with remaining ingredients for a second pizza.

And here's the other recipe. It's for dinner tonight. It had a lot of extra sauce leftover, so I made Basmati Rice and mixed some extra suace in with it, and will serve the chicken over it.

Roast Chicken With Sour Cream and Mango Chutney

4 boneless skinless breast halves (I used thighs)
1/2 cup Mayonnaise
1/2 cup Sour Cream
2 tablespoons Major Grey Mango Chutney
1 teaspoon curry powder
Juice of 1 lemon
Freshly ground pepper

1) Preheat oven to 450
2) Lay chicken flat in a Pyrex or Enamel roasting pan or casseroloe
3) Mix all of the other ingredients together. Taste as you add the lemon -- you might want to adjust the lemoniness since it can be overpowering
4) Spoon sauce over chicken, cover with foil and roast until chicken is cooked through. She suggests 15 minutes at 450, but I used thighs and cooked mine for about 30-40.
5) Remove from oven and grind fresh pepper over the top.

Thanks Missinidi!

Okay - I just posted on the February Hits and Misses threads and have finished my tally...(drumroll please).....

THIRTY!

Hey - that's pretty darn good for me. So are we doing this again for March?

Hey, that's great, Kim -- way to go!! Yup, I'll start it up again for March. I'll be back to post my final number tonight (added two more last night), but I think it was around 30 too.

Ok, my final number is 18 and I am really pleased with it! That's slightly more than I make in a normal month, and with Feb being shorter than most, I'd say I did pretty dang good.

Onward towards March.

I just posted mine on the hits and misses. I made 14 new recipes this month. This is a lot for me! I am thrilled with that. The only bummer was that I ended the month on a yucky note. The only "Blech" recipe I tried- and it was last night. It was so bad, I may have a hard time to convince myself to go outside the norm for this month. We'll see. Thanks for the challenge idea- it was fun to keep track. Hopefully I can keep it up!

Erika, I just saw that "blech" recipe on the other thread. Was surprised to see it was from Barefoot Contessa ... who'da thunk a clunker would come from her? :D Guess everyone's allowed a dud...

Well, even though I didn't think I would do much cooking this month since I took a second job, I still managed to try 28 new recipes- lots of weekend baking helped, because we actually had a few things that were repeaters from the past- something I rarely do. My secret goal for the year is to have made 365 new recipes, but my real goal is 250. It seems like I'm on my way- my year to date total is 69!

Congrats to all who made their monthly goal! I find that in itself very motivating for the next month.

My total for February was 47. This brings my year-to-date total to 100 even. WOW! I'm really surprised! I have always tended to cook new recipes versus making my menus from "tried and true" ones but this year is the first time I have actually kept track. At least now I will have a list to look back on when I do want to repeat some winners.

My end of the month total was 39. I beat my January total by 16. YAY!
But, I don't think that I can keep up the pace.;) I found myself spending a LOT of time searching through recipes (which was GREAT fun!!). And, it gave me a great chance to use my new pans. I definitely went out of my way to find stove top recipes rather than oven utilized recipes so I could use those pans.
I'd like to continue doing this but not keep trying to up the ante each month. I found myself constantly resisting using old recipes so that I could add another new one to the month. Maybe I oculd set a minimum number of new recipes to make each month? That way I won't be feeling pressured to make 128 new recipes in October or something.:D

Peggy, WOW, you are really cooking!!

Missindi, how was the roast chicken recipe? I was thinking about trying that later this week.

Hey Chocolate Rose... I agree on the "not raising the ante every month." Eventually you'll get to a comfortable level (number-wise) and then the "challenge" would be to maintain it.

Although it would be "fun" to see how many new recipes it would take to make use crack!! :D

For me, the challenge helps to continue trying new ones in an effort to get through my massive "to try" piles. Having the challenge kinda reminds me to go through the pile a bit.

And lastly, the roast chicken was good. It made a lot of sauce, so I made a batch of Basmati rice and mixed some of the sauce into the rice to flavor it, and served the chicken on top of it. Everyone thought it was delicious (and so simple to make!). :)

OK, just posted to the 2/05 Hits and Misses thread ... 33. I'm pretty pleased with that one. Shooting for 38 in March. :)
