Check out Wegmans supermarket- they have quite a thorough site with great info on fresh veggies and fruit. Click on any ingredient and they'll tell you what to look for in terms of freshness, when it's generally available, preparation tips, storage, etc. I use this site quite often, especially when faced with new and different ingredients I've never used before. Hope this helps! http://www.wegmans.com/kitchen/ingredients/produce/index.asp

luv2cook,
You should also keep in mind that what's in season can vary widely depending on where you live. I was able to find out what's in season for my neck of the woods through a web site about a local farm.

I have never had much interest in reading veggie books. Is there any place I can check on the net that will tell me what fruits and veggies are in season? There's been talk on this board about eating seasonally and that makes lots of sense to me...

Hi luv2cook, try going to a farmer's market in your area. They have only locally grown produce and you can feel pretty sure that you are eating in the right season. If you shop at a super market stay away from imported produce such as South America. Not only have they traveled a long was to get to their distination, but pesticides that are not approve to be used in our country may have been used. Even imported produce that states it has been organically grown may be dangerous due to what it has been fertilized with (I learned this in a food safety class and you don't even want me to go there, trust me). The farmer's market produce looks and tastes soooo much better. You can even talk to the growers if you have questions.
