Ok, I am not sure if anyone can help me out, but I am asking on behalf of someone else who will be moving to Indiana in Sept, specifically, the University of Notre Dame.
Does anyone have tips for sources for affordable housing or location information? They will have a research position at the University, but relatively low budget one.
Any first hand info will be appreciated. I will also Google it.

Sorry, but IM from central IN, but wanted to bump this up :)
Alysha (Lindrusso) is from N IN, (but not SOuth Bend) but she may have some general info
I can try and ask a friend who grew up in South Bend. I live in Central Indiana and can't help you at all with Northern Indiana but I'll ask and hopefully get back to you with some good info.

I lived in South Bend for a couple years in the late 90s. I too moved there when I didn't have much money and was looking for more affordable housing. I found that nearly all the apartments in South Bend are in large complexes. There are very few 2-4 family homes. So, your best bet for apartment hunting is to find a renters guide that lists all the major complexes. (One of those free books that you find all around town). The housing that is closest to Notre Dame is the most expensive. I lived in an apartment complex that was on the north west side of the city, away from ND and it was reasonable. As you might guess, it's easy to find housing there in the spring and summer and more difficult in late summer when the students are returning. If you have any other questions about South Bend, let me know; I'd be happy to try to answer.

Thank you for your answers. I will let you know if I have any other questions, etc. Still in the early stages....

Sorry, I'm only about an hour or so from SB, but I don't know anything about that area except that I've been shopping in Mishawaka which is close by. :)
I do know that in general, housing in IN is very affordable. Our particular county is more expensive than a lot of places in IN because we have so many lakes.
Alysha :)
