I just got back from one of the pricier grocery stores around and made the mistake of buying my produce there rather than at one of the neighborhood markets. $3.99 a pound for white mushrooms! What the...? And creminis were 4.99! (Never mind the fact that I once asked the mushroom man at the farmers' market why some stores charge more for creminis and he said "because they can" )
Do you have any idea what they'r asking for a pound of button mushrooms where you shop?

I want to say it's the same here. I bought mushrooms on my last trip, and the 8 oz. package of sliced was the same price as the 8 oz whole - $1.99 (I'll cut them myself if they're cheaper, but I buy the presliced if they're the same price or on sale).

unless there's a sale (fortunately there often is, at one store or another), our local markets charge $1.99/8 oz and $3.99/lb. i buy when they're marked down (Pathmark does this when they get a new shipment), but we also have an Aldi (no-frills, European chain)here and i can reliably get white buttons for $.99/8 oz. i also get beautiful celery there under a dollar, but i typically don't buy their other produce. i'll also buy one large Portabella, and it equals 8 oz of button whites with more flavor.

i hafta say, mushrooms used to go into everything i cooked, in large measure because i was trained on french cooking. now i use them occasionally. actually, since the prices have risen, i no longer even keep a batch of duxelles on hand, which i do miss.

Every other week I see the white buttons on sale....1.50 or 1.25 for an 8 oz. pkg.

The normal price I see is $1.99/8 oz, though they go on buy one get one free sales pretty often. I usually buy two packages each time I see such a sale.

Vicky, I also saw red and green peppers for $.99/lb the other week, and had to buy several at that price (esp. good for the red ones). :)

My issue with the presliced mushrooms is that they come in a 6 oz package instead of 8 oz! I get my 8 oz package of creminis at Trader Joe's where they sell for around $1.39. The grocery store is a bit higher, even for bulk. A local latino grocery store will have 8 oz of white buttons go on sale for .89, that is always nice.

THe large asian grocery store chains around here (MD-VA-DC) usually have an 8 ounce package for .69 or .79...every so often it might be .99. THeir produce prices are AMAZING! Cucumbers...3 for a dollar-green onions the same-red onions .59-.79...etc. Grape tomatoes are often .99 pint but are sometimes as "high" as 1.59:-).

Yup, the Asian groceries and the independent produce shops are the way to go, but I got a little lazy. And whattaya know, DBF didn't get home from work until 11PM (ate at the office of course) and I won't be fixing dinner again until Saturday. SO glad I paid extra for them!
Anyhow, it looks like maybe $3.99 isn't WAY out of line with what the mainstream retailers are charging. But still, I'm with Susan - it's a lot.

Hmmm... I paid $1.89 today for 16 oz of whole button mushrooms. That was my everyday price- not on sale. I'm not sure what they charge for pre-sliced, I never use them.
