Last night our dog, Kramer, was hit by a car. One of our sons was taking him for a walk and took him over to a big field near our subdivision which hasn't been developed yet and let him off the leash so he could run. He's been doing this for 2 years and Kramer has never run off so far. Well, it was about 10pm and very dark (no street lights) and he couldn't find the dog. So he came back home to see if maybe the dog had tried to go home by himself.

We all left the house to look for him except our youngest son who stayed home in case Kramer came to the door.

Eventually we did find him. He was limping through the field near the older boys' high school (BTW, all of these areas are within a mile or less from our house), near where he'd been running. We brought him home and he seemed alert and normal, other than the limp. Then we noticed his collar was missing and DH thought he had seen it when he was out walking. We went back and sure enough, there was his collar, broken where the clasp-thingie is. Also the tags (metal) were crunched. The collar was right on the white line of the road (the shoulder) so this is why we're pretty sure he was hit by a car. This road is a 50mph road that runs next to our subdivision, so obviously the person must've seen Kramer and tried to stop, or he wouldn't be here at all.

We did take him to an animal ER (it was about 11pm by then) and the vet didn't think any bones were broken, TG! She did say, however, that we should keep an eye on him through the night because his lungs could be bruised and he may have trouble breathing. She also gave him some anti-inflammatory meds.

Around 2am he did start wheezing/gagging and eventually coughed up some pinkish mucous (sp?). I called the dr back, but we didn't take him back as it does seem like he is getting enough oxygen. I was basically up all night! His coughing/wheezing seems to be less frequent now, so hopefully that is good news (maybe his lungs have less fluid in them, I mean).

So I am very grateful that we found him and he's alive with hopefully minor injuries. Considering the speed that cars go on that road, we are very lucky!! Now we just hope he will continue to heal and everything will be OK.

Thanks for listening :)

Oh, Suzy, how awful!!! It sounds like it could have been much, much worse, but I hope that Kramer is OK and that he recovers quickly.

Oh, Suzy, how scary! :( I'm so glad you were able to find Kramer last night so that he could be warm and cared for instead of lost and scared. Sending best wishes for his full recovery!

{{{{{Suzy, Kramer & family}}}}}}}

Check in and give us progress reports, ok? We're all thinking about you and him!

In the FWIW department, we had a 10-year-old mutt who was struck by a car on our residential street a few years back. He was pretty seriously injured -- four pelvic fractures -- but no internal organ damage. Our friends and family thought we were nuts, but we had him go through a pins-and-plates surgery to put him back together, and guess what? The dog never even limped afterward, although he did move pretty slowly in cold weather. I just offer this as an example that even after a bad run-in with a car, dogs can get through a lot!

How old is Kramer? He's a pretty young guy, isn't he?

Thanks all for the good wishes and hugs and prayers :)

He seems to be doing well, although still limping around and wheezing. But his breathing is much better than it was during the night. We've been babying him and I think he likes the extra attention.

Jackie, he'll be 3 years old in April

Hi Suzy,

I missed this on Saturday - how's Kramer doing?

Sending good thoughts your way.

Well, the limping is still there, but his breathing is almost completely normal (yay!).

The only time he has had trouble since Saturday was when someone knocked on the door yesterday which threw him into a frenzy (as it always does  ), which then started a wheezing fit. But it only lasted a few seconds.

Today I don't think he had any breathing troubles, so it appears he is on the mend :)

Aww, Suzy - poor Kramer! Great to hear that he's getting better.

OT - my dumb doggies got off their leash the other day and took off for parts unknown. Someone found them 1 mile away running down the road. God bless good samaritans and cell phones - she called me right away and I went riding off to the rescue. You'd think my goofy shih tsus would stay near a house, wouldn't you? Nope. They are Burmese Mt. dogs in little bodies.

I'm working on getting underground wiring for restraint, but that doesn't keep other dogs out - which means that all the other dogs in the area (whose owners apparently don't abide by the leash law) can still be around to terrorize them. I'm so unsure of what to do. I keep thinking that a nice old lady with a fenced city yard is the right place for them - it's too wild out here. But I'd die without my doggies. Sigh.

Okay - back to the regularly scheduled thread.
