Last night our dog, Kramer, was hit by a car. One of our sons was taking him for a walk and took him over to a big field near our subdivision which hasn't been developed yet and let him off the leash so he could run. He's been doing this for 2 years and Kramer has never run off so far. Well, it was about 10pm and very dark (no street lights) and he couldn't find the dog. So he came back home to see if maybe the dog had tried to go home by himself.
We all left the house to look for him except our youngest son who stayed home in case Kramer came to the door.
Eventually we did find him. He was limping through the field near the older boys' high school (BTW, all of these areas are within a mile or less from our house), near where he'd been running. We brought him home and he seemed alert and normal, other than the limp. Then we noticed his collar was missing and DH thought he had seen it when he was out walking. We went back and sure enough, there was his collar, broken where the clasp-thingie is. Also the tags (metal) were crunched. The collar was right on the white line of the road (the shoulder) so this is why we're pretty sure he was hit by a car. This road is a 50mph road that runs next to our subdivision, so obviously the person must've seen Kramer and tried to stop, or he wouldn't be here at all.
We did take him to an animal ER (it was about 11pm by then) and the vet didn't think any bones were broken, TG! She did say, however, that we should keep an eye on him through the night because his lungs could be bruised and he may have trouble breathing. She also gave him some anti-inflammatory meds.
Around 2am he did start wheezing/gagging and eventually coughed up some pinkish mucous (sp?). I called the dr back, but we didn't take him back as it does seem like he is getting enough oxygen. I was basically up all night! His coughing/wheezing seems to be less frequent now, so hopefully that is good news (maybe his lungs have less fluid in them, I mean).
So I am very grateful that we found him and he's alive with hopefully minor injuries. Considering the speed that cars go on that road, we are very lucky!! Now we just hope he will continue to heal and everything will be OK.
Thanks for listening :)
