If you could choose any group of people (say 4 plus your S/O) for a dinner party, who would you choose? Here's my list
Leonard Cohen, I love his music and he has an amazing imagination.
George Clooney - I'd love to see how down to earth he really is, he appears to be in interviews.
Rosie O'Donnell - I think she is an amazingly funny lady.
Sarah Ferguson - I'd love to hear about her experiences with the Royal Family

Cool topic... it's hard to narrow it down to just 4! I'll give it a shot anyway.
1. Wayne Gretzky- I've been a huge hockey fan all my life; he's my all-time #1 sports hero.
2. Sean Connery- I enjoyed him as Bond and still enjoy his movies; he seems like he'd be interesting to be with. (plus I love the accent!)
3. Enya- I would love to hear her phenomenal singing voice in person.
4. Jerry Seinfeld- What the heck, somebody needs to lighten the party up a bit!
(Julia, I assume you meant people who are still among us as that's the only way this fantasy could ever come true. But if I could pick someone from the past, it would be my grandpa. I never really knew him since he passed away when I was only 2.)

No, the guests don't have to be living - it's a fantasy after all.

OK, my list may change. I have to think about this. But off the top of my head...
1)William Shakespeare-Every time I read his words, I am astounded.
2)David Duchovny-The X Files just isn't the same...
3)John Lennon
4)Toni Morrison-see above William Shakespeare.

Here's my list.
1. Jesus Hmm... for me anyway this one speaks for itself.
2. Abraham Lincoln Because of the courage and faith he showed in office
3. Nat King Cole I love his voice and I heard once that he didn't think of himself as a good singer and originally just started out as a piano player.
4. Jane Austen (Currently reading Emma and I am amazed at her perspective in writing especially given when it was written.
Interestingly for me, no one who is currently living. That could change if I thought about this more, but I think these 4 are the top ones for me right now.
Laura- I'm currently reading Emma, too! I got it after reading all the great reviews on this board, actually!
Anyway, I would pick:
(1) John F. Kennedy - he died before I was born, and left such a legacy behind, that I would love to meet him.
(2) Arthur Ashe - I'm a lifelong tennis fanatic, and I always admired his athletic achievements and personal strength.
(3) Charles Dickens- I've always loved his works
(4) Audra MacDonald- Opera singer. I am not one for classical music, but I love her voice.
Brad Pitt (duh!)
Benicio Del Toro
Gillian Anderson (for my SO)
The cast of ER (esp. Luka and Dr. Green)
Steve from Blues Clues
....I watch way to much TV.

Oh this is fun! Though I would be worried about everyone getting along...
Willie Nelson because his music is amazing and he is so very, very cool.
Mark Twain, partly because he would give my husband someone to hang out with and partly because I enjoy the company of cantankerous old Southern men (really).
Albert Einstein, not simply because he was a brilliant man but because he was also an amazing and compassionate man. And also he couldn't tie his shoelaces. Fascinating.
This is harder than I thought-I don't know who else I'd invite. Maybe Matt Groening, the guy who created the Simpsons. I think he'd be fun at dinner.
These aren't the people that I most admire, necessarily, just people that I would enjoy having dinner with

This will be hard to narrow down.
Thomas Jefferson (he is so intelligent and a noble patriot.)
William Shakespeare (for his humor, wit and his sense of irony)
Walt Disney (because I am still a kid at heart and no one knows their way around a kid's heart better)
Mary, Mother of God (not to be preachy, but because hers is the story of all time and I would love to hear her telling.
and, since I don't have a SO, that gives me one extra invitation, so...
Charles Schultz (for his sense of humor, his humanity and of course, Snoopy!)
Now that my party is full let me add that I love the ideas of Charles Dickens (I love his writings), Mark Twain (for the same reason), Albert Einstein & John Kennedy (both facinating men) and Sean Connery (let's throw in Mel Gibson) for just plain obvious reasons. Great thread. Now what in the world would you serve to such a diverse group?

What a great idea for a thread!
Julie Andrews - I think she has an amazing, beautiful voice, she's such a captivating actress, and I think it's needless to say that I'm an ardent Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music fan.
Jane Austen - She was such an incredible writer, so witty and ahead of her time.
Art Garfunkel - Well, I was named after his song, For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her, but also because I think that he always fell in Paul Simon's shadow, even when they were a duo, and I'd love to know more about him(And they are, far and away, my favorite singing group)
Lewis Carroll - Okay, so everyone doesn't say nice things about him, but I think he was just brilliant, and I think a conversation with him would just open up my eyes and my mind more than I could imagine.
Ooh, how fun! Now does anyone want to help me pull this off? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Ayn Rand: I am a huge fan of her books and much of her philosophy.
Julia Roberts: My favorite actress and a seemingly very intelligent and interesting person. I think she would be a great conversationalist.
Jewel Kilcher: (Don't laugh.) My favorite artist. I greatly admire her song writing and think she must be a very sensitive soul and a great person.
Hmmm... All women so far. Let me think of a man...
I just can't right now. My fourth would be Jill Conner Brown, author of The Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love and God Save the Sweet Potato Queens. If you have read her books you know how incredibly funny this woman is!
Seems like Ayn Rand might be a bit of a dull spot at my little dinner party. But that's OK - I would still love to meet her and talk with her about her ideas.

I know this is an old thread, but I just found it in my search for something completely unrelated. I thought it would be a nice way to begin this weekend and it got me thinking....
Mine is an all-women dinner party (sorry DH):
My great-grandmother Frare who came to the United States in the 'teens from Nervesa, a little town in Northern Italy. I would give anything to hear her describe her home in Italy, what it was like leaving home as a young wife and mother knowing she would never return, and how she adjusted to this strange place. I wonder if I resemble her at all in spirit...
Billie Holiday My most cherished singer.
Rosa Parks to be face to face with true courage, dignity, and honor
Audrey Hepburn a woman who embodied grace, generosity, humility, and consummate style. I used to dream of being Holly Go Lightly. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I'd like to be a fly on the wall at Emilycat's, Susann's, and Laura's parties.

How fun is this!?!
Dinah Washington - I just lover her voice.
Julia Roberts - A fellow-Georgian that actually won an Oscar!
MeeMaw - I would love to have just one more evening with my grandmother.
Ernest Hemingway - Can you imagine the stories he would tell?

1. My older sister- we live almost 3,000 miles apart from one another so any time I get with her is precious.
2. Oprah- wonderful conversation, sparkling wit, and such grace
3. Margaret Mitchell- favorite author, totally inspirational life, also one heck of a dinner compainion (so I hear)
4. Martha Stewart- also, one hell of a dinner party guest. I'd have her bring dessert.
And with this list, I doubt my DH would want to attend!

Oh, this is one of those threads that makes us REVEAL stuff about ourselves, isn't it?? OK, I'll take the bait, but no one better laugh!!
(1) John Denver I am a 31-year obsessed fan that has never found another voice more true, another vision so clear. When he died I felt like I'd lost a member of my family. I'm the ditzy one in WA state that's driving around with a personalized license plate that says RKMTNHI.
(2) Karen Carpenter The female equivalent to John Denver in voice and passion. I would love to sit down with her and just talk, to find out what made her feel so awful about herself when the whole world placed her on 'Top of the World'.
(3) Lyndon B. Johnson It's not that I'm a fan, quite the opposite. I'm a life-long Vietnam Veteran's supporter, and I would love to sit with that man and try to figure out why he insisted on keeping our troops in Southeast Asia several years longer than they should have been. Actually, watching he and PeaceMan John Denver together would be a definite Kodak Moment!
(4) Myrtle Lott, My maternal grandmother whom I was never fortunate enough to meet. She had a stroke and passed away six months before I was born, while she was knitting booties for me. I've heard about this woman all my life, and I was even named after her (middle name!) but I never got to talk to her, and find out about my mother's childhood from her perspective. I feel like a part of my 'history' is missing because of it.
I'm sure others would come to me if I sat here long enough, but those were the first four that popped into my mind!

My SIL adores John Denver, so there is at least one other Washingtonian who shares your passion http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My very dear friends (2) that moved sooo far away that I rarely get to see anymore.
My very old grandmother who lives too far away to come to dinner
My lovely mother who is fighting breast cancer with incredible bravery... who also lives too far away to come to dinner...
One new friend that I want to take the time to know better.
My teenage sons who are too busy for "mom".
My lovely husband who treats me like a queen, though I don't deserve it.

She doesn't adore him as much as me!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
I was the weird kid that discovered JD at 7 years old, and didn't listen to much else until I was almost in high school! I introduced my father to his music, and when most fathers are yelling "Turn that stuff down!" my dad was yelling "Hey, turn that up!" It was something Dad and I could always do together, listen to his music and dance around the living room. There was never any arguing in the car about what to listen to either! One of my best memories of my late childhood is my dad and I attending a John Denver concert together. Not many kids take their parents to a concert! My only regret is that I'll never see him sing live again.
Too sad... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Well, considering the mix of people I have thought to invite, I will have to think very hard about a menu. It also shows how many sides a person can have........
Janis Joplin- Her songs have always had alot of meaning to me. She lived life as she saw it and died too young. "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."
Mother Theresa- I'd love to be that full of peace and love and caring. A very rare gift indeed.
Julia Child- for all her awesome culinary knowledge and experiences....and her humor.
And because its a fantasy, I'd like to invite all the Baldwin brothers for dessert!! (whip cream anyone?)
