View Full Version : The "I Can't Find ____, but I CAN Find ___" Swap

MISSINDI

Over the last couple of months, I've noticed that there always seems to be something a recipe calls for that I can't find in my neck of the woods, but that someone else can find easily. Some recent items things I haven't been able to find include cinnamon chips, banana extract (never even knew such a thing existed!), coconut extract, etc. Things that I can find easily that I've seen others can include Chaat Masala (and other Indian related spices), Old Bay, etc.

Anyone up for a small food swap of things we can't find/and can find? All these things seem to be in the same price neighborhood and are all easily mailable.

I'll start ...

I can't find any fun extracts other than the normal orange, lemon, almond, rum, vanilla. Anyone have access to some they wanna trade for something?

I have easy access to an Indian grocery store, an Asian grocery store and a Hispanic one, so if you're looking for something that might originate from there, I can help!

I picked up a few extra boxes of Chaat Masala this weekend, so if anyone's looking for that, I'm ready to go. :D

C'mon and play along... :)

I'd love to but what I am having trouble finding is refridgerated. I will watch the thread tho'in case something pops up I can either help with or use.

I haven't come across any specialty extracts, dang it. Lemon is as exotic as I get :o :p

See? Now you can play along... you do need something non-refrigerated. :D

I saw cinnamon flavoring the other day in with the extracts. Would that count?

Counts for me -- we don't have that here. Whatcha looking for?

I can never find cinnamon chips or toffee chips (like what they called for in that brownie recipe in Jan/Feb). Do you have any luck with those in Jersey? On the other hand I would ask for Jersey produce (which I think is highly underrated) but I don't think that could be shipped!

MISSINDI
02-14-2005, 02:28 PM
I can't find cinnamon chips, but once Jen from TN gets here, she can help you out with that one. ;) I can get toffee chips though. Sounds like we have a trade. :D PM your addy and I'll pick some up this week.

I would LOVE to do something like this and had a similar idea, but I'm afraid I'd be in the "can't find" category only and wouldn't be able to find anything for anyone else. It would be a one-way swap! :o :D

I think you'd be surprised. I didn't know that Old Bay was hard to find in Canada ... betcha you have it where you are. Also, someone else had a hard time finding brown lentils (Jen, your bag in on the way!)...

I think a lot of times, we just get used to what we have easy access to, and forget that not everyone does. :)

FWIW, you can get extracts on line

I know at King Arthur they have in many flavors including the notorious and mysterious Eau de Bakery :D

I can't find espresso powder (unless I mail order). I have access to all kinds of Mexican or Oriental products. Chipotle chiles, achiote paste, seasonings, chiles, etc. The Oriental market has all kinds of sauces, seasonings, sushi stuff, noodles too.

What's really bizarre about this is that I live in a town of about 16,000 and there are only 2 good sized grocery stores and I can find this stuff, yet smoked gouda is out of the realm I guess.

swquilts--I have an Italian grocery nearby and can almost always find the instant espresso powder. On the other hand, good dried chiles are not always easy to find here.

I would love to play but I can't find things like escarole, broccoli rabe(the produce guy handed me broccolini) and andouille sausage(the butcher handed me keilbasa!)

I will take a peek for fun extracts, but don't hold your breath!!

Memphis still has tons of cinnamon chips, so HUNGRY send me a PM if you need some. I see you are in NOVA so I suspect you have access to some more "exotic" things I can't seem to find here.

I agree with MISSINDI, yes you can probably find all of this online but it is more fun to trade. Plus, instead of spending your money on shipping, your spending it on sending something to someone in need!:) It also makes me smile when I use an ingredient someone here has sent me because I think of them. I wouldn't do that if I had just got it somewhere online.

Besides Cinnamon Chips (and most other chips except for expresso or cappacino), I'm not sure what else I have that others don't (besides TONS of barbeque sauces and seasonings) but I'll think about it and post back.

Silly girl! Try considering it a personal shopper kinda thing!:p I've ordered form Watkins and will warn you that most of them are flavorings not really extracts but they're dandy in my yogurt.
Also you can order direct from Lorann which is where KA gets there extracts/flavorings (and they're a bit cheaper).
I can get coffee, lime and mandarin orange extracts in the regular grocery store, banana and cinnamon too.

jellyben,
I have a small stock of dried espazote (didn't know what I was ordering when I ordered it from Penzey's...will gladly share! I can also get andouille!

it's strange to me that missindi can't get Hershey's cinnamon chips, since we're both in jersey and both have access to both Pathmark and ShopRite. i know the SR's are regional franchises, but P'mark is a chain. odd.

while i don't really see this happening, i'll play, and i'll definitely follow through if i can help someone.

i can get:

instant espresso
lots of different dried chiles (usually 2oz=$4, and no mailing costs)
locally harvested organic honey from local beekeeper i've known for 20 years, in various flavors, in case anyone is interested!:)
some other things you all have mentioned/check with me

i can't locate:

dried cherries (other than a 1-hr away Target i get to rarely)
lentils other than brown, green or red

cornichons!

pickled ginger (the flat, thin, pink slices)****** want/need/gotta have!!!! (DS brought me picked ginger from Japan, and it bears no resemblance. it's really differnt, juliennned, and very spicy-tart-vinegary/biting. almost more like a horseradish-type condiment.)

I'm not sure what goodies I can offer from Columbus. We do have a Penzey's, but of course you can mail order that. We do have Trader Joe's as well. Ask, and I can check my stores!

The big lure: I go down to Cincinnati at least once a month, and the fabled Jungle Jim's, that grocery mecca which beckons to all food lovers, can supply just about anything imported your heart desires, plus a whole lot of other stuff. I can't promise rapid delivery, since I'm a hundred miles away!

I am desperately searching for (please don't laugh, I'll explain shortly) a type of Campbell's condensed soup. Campbell's Healthy Request Bean with Bacon, to be specific. Not the regular Bean with Bacon, and not the Healthy Choice brand. We're talking plain old Campbell's, but the Healthy Request line, which has less salt, fat, etc.

This is a "nostalgia food" for me, and it has to do with my (now deceased) dad, and it would mean a lot to me. I cannot find it anywhere in Ohio (where it certainly used to be available, at least in Cincinnati). I was able to purchase it in Minnesota as recently as three years ago. I was also able to find it in Albany, New York (but I haven't lived there for at least six years).

A big thank-you in advance to anyone who is willing to check their local store, and many thanks to Missindi for starting this thread.

I don't think it's odd at all. Different areas get different stuff. I have checked Pathmark, ShopRite, A&P, Key Food, and Weis. I have also checked in PA and NY on a few field trips. They don't carry the cinnamon chips, and I have given up trying, 'specially when I have Jen helping me out. ;)

That said, Aubergine, using your logic, I suppose I should "find it odd" that I CAN find dried cherries, cornichons and a whole array of lentils. :) If you'd like me to send you some, let me know. :D

I'll look for that soup for you too.

I'm trying to think what I can't get. I do get chilies, cinnamon chips, capauccino chips, and assortment of Mexican chocolates, espresso powder, salsas and barbeque sasuces. Oh, the only source for Green and Black chocolate is in town and I haven't made it yet -- that's a possibility.

What's Green and Black chocolate?

What's that other chocolate that starts with a V? Varhlona or something similar? I can't find that anywhere...

Beth
02-14-2005, 09:20 PM
It's an organic, free trade chocolate usually sold in health food or specialty stores. I understand Whole Foods carries it, but that's an hour drive each way for me, so I'm not going to make a special trip just for that. My Brownie Fairy sent me some of the dark chocolate with orange and spice (among other chocolate and coffee) that was really nice.

I can get Varhlona here, and Schaffenberger, Ghiradelli, Guittard.

I might be interested in trying coffees or teas from local shops (DH and I have started ordering our espresso from NY).

Anyone have Pomegrate Molasses?

I can get pomegranate molasses, any number of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, East Indian, Persian, German etc. Condiments. I am happy to track down and ship, it would just take a little longer, as I would have to register with the FDA before I sent anything.
Oh and Lentils for every colour of the rainbow...
I would trade for Penzeys orders - the shipping and handling they charge for Canada is ridiculous.

I never used to be able to find this, either. Now I make my own--here's the recipe! They say to store it in the refrigerator, but you can also can it; that's what I do.

Sweet Hot Jalapeņo Jelly

3/4 cup chopped red bell peppers
3/4 cup chopped green bell peppers
1/3 cup diced and seeded jalapeņos
2 3/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
6 tablespoons Certo liquid pectin

Combine the peppers, jalapeņos, sugar, vinegar, and lime juice in a large saucepan over medium heat. Heat until warm and sugar is dissolved. Pour the mixture in a blender or food processor and blend for 5 seconds. Return the blended mixture to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface. Decrease the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in the pectin, increase the heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and cool. The jelly will set as it cools down. When cool, cover and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

I'll also look when I go shopping. MISSINDI, i'm fairly certain it must say Healthy Request. That is actually one of my most favorite Campbells soups growing up. But Kyra is right, boy does it have the fat and calories! I'd like to find the Healthy Request version for me!!!

Missindi and Pam,

Thanks so much for being willing to check for me. Yes, I'm afraid it's specifically the Healthy Request version I'm looking for, not just the plain Campbell's Classic. I was thinking that the label might actually say "Bean with Ham and Bacon" or "Bean with Bacon and Ham." I apologize for any confusion, and can only thank you again (and again, and again...).

So, here's the deal . . . I can't believe that I walked into a "small" Safeway and found Pineapple Extract by McCormick, go figure! Here is the recipe from the BB along with the note about never finding the pineapple extract:

PINEAPPLE CHEESE BREAD

this is the Paula Deen recipe i referred to in the odd combinations thread. it is simple to make and absolutely delicious. don't stress over the pineapple extract - no one i know has ever found it; i use lemon instead.
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Yield: 1 loaf

2 cups self-rising flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup canned crushed pineapple with juice
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3/4 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 teaspoon pineapple extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Using a large mixing bowl, sift the flour and sugar and mix together. In a separate bowl, mix the pineapple, eggs, oil, and add to the flour mixture, mix well. Fold in the cheese, nuts, and pineapple extract. Pour mixture into a greased 9 by 3-inch loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour. Cool and turn out bread from pan. Allow to cool completely before slicing.

Oh, and by the way, I believe this was from a thread about unusual ingredient combinations and I found this to be a very good bread, used for sandwiches too. Very interesting combinations.

Now, the trade off . . . and I hope I'm spelling this right: Pickapeppa Sauce???

Who can help?

Thanks, Linda ~

I would love dried tart cherries and cinnamon chips. I have never seen dried tart cherries in my entire life but keep bumping into great-sounding recipes that need them!! And I used to get cinnamon chips but they are now a thing of the past.

I have access to Middle Eastern spices, Asian/Chinese grocery stores (that sell a mean black sesame oil - the best I've ever had), Old Bay seasoning, etc.

Any takers??

I can take care of the dried tart cherries for you. :)

I have access to the Middle Eastern and Asian/Chinese stores as well, but I think I can come up with something you might have that I don't... you know those special rolls they use for lobster roll sandwiches? They look kinda like hot dog rolls, except they're more square. Since you're in MA -- I assume you might have that at your local grocery store, no? If not, then anything NE-related is ok by me. PM me when you get a chance. I'm actually going to the area where I can get the cherries tonight, and will pick up a few packages...

I'm ROFLMAO here. They don't just look kinda like hot dog rolls; they ARE hot dog rolls! They're a little more square at the ends, and are split down the top, but they're definitely still hot dog rolls. I never stop to think that other people don't have those.:p :)

If Loren can't find any for you, I can.

And just when I was thinking I wouldn't be able to play in this swap. Actually, I'm not sure there's really anything I need right now. My mom tends to supply me with chipotle peppers in adobo sauce since I can't find them here. But I would be happy to send anyone something they're looking for.

I can get a very extensive selection of Stonewall Kitchen products. Fresh Maine shrimp is also running $1.49 a pound right now, but don't think that would work in the mail too well. :p :p

As for your chipotle peppers in adobo sauce -- I can find that here. We have a Hispanic grocery store the next town over with all sorts of fun things ... Adobo seasoning, dulce de leche, mole sauce, etc.

It is "Bean with Ham and Bacon". I have had it before, but not while I've been living in Iowa, so I'm not sure if they have it, although the local HyVee here has more cans of Campbell's Soup than I think I have ever seen before.

As for what is is Iowa that is "different"? Other than Cinnamon Chips, I have to say "not much".

FYI, there is a website out there that deals in "nostalgia" foods. Kind of interesting to see some of the stuff (esp the candy) that I remember eating growing up. http://www.hometownfoods.com

The have the Campbell's Soup - but only the regular version.

Glad you got it! I was actually surprised when DH brought home the McCormick brand - mine is a different brand, Durkee I think? Will be shopping this weekend so should have another package out to you soon.

Sneezles post on the Shrimp recipes reminded of another thing I can never find in these here parts ... canned shrimp stock. Yes, I KNOW I can make it, but some days, you just don't have the time, and I know it exists canned, just not here. Anyone have access to it?

And for some of the other trades in progress, Loren, I got your dried fruit and will send out Tuesday (PO closed Monday), Kim your truffle oil has been sent and Jen, I picked up 3 bags of Stacy's Pita Chips for you last night and will send those on Tuesday too.

Yeah, Pita Chips! Can't wait. But I'm already in your debt because I got the lentils and chaat masala on Saturday - thank you so ever much! Lentil and Potato Stew is now on the menu for this week - wanted to make it this weekend but I forgot to bring the recipe home with me and I could not access CL for some reason this weekend at home. I'm also going to attempt the Chicken Salad with Chaat Masala but it will depend on if I have any leftover chicken or not.

I have your Pepper Jellys and Coconut Extract and will mail tomorrow, too.

Gracie - I have your cinnamon chips and cherries and will also mail on Tuesday. HUNGRY - your cinnamon chips will be on the way tomorrow as well.

Just keeping up my end of the bargain -

Missindi - your special lobster rolls are on their way - bought and mailed Saturday.

Jen - I am expecting to get to Chinatown during the week this week. It's so much easier going on my lunch break than from home. I'm going to hit their larger grocery store (still can't call it a "supermarket") in hopes of getting some English-speaking help if I can't find your items (most everything is labeled only in Chinese).

Hi there. I have been reading for the past 6 month w/out possibility of posting due to computer/site problems, but now here I go.

Missindi: I guess I am lucky enough to find all the things you are looking for and more (I am a pastry chef in downtown Charleston), but I can't find good Indian spices. The 2 indian restaurant in town won't give up their secrets and the one indian grocery stoe closed a few months ago. anything special that you recommend? Is there something you still need?

Misconduct, Not MISSINDI, but I know she would love to help you out. Just wanted to say welcome to the boards! A pastry chef in Charleson, huh? I'm jealous. DH and I have always talked about moving to Charleston - we think it's beautiful! Now that your computer problems are resolved, hope you'll stick around!

Misconduct ... a pastry chef? How cool is that?! Was watching the Birthday Cake Championships on FoodTV last night -- amazing stuff you can do with a little flour, marzipan and food coloring. Five year dream is to still open up a little restaurant. :)

Still Misconduct ... any spices in particular you were looking for? The Indian grocery store is really just a few miles down the road, and I'm happy to get anything. I have a few extra boxes of Chaat Masala, if you want one. I picked up some for a few other posters, and got some extra while I was there. I have a great Grilled Chicken Salad recipe that uses those spices. I also buy Garam Masala a lot there. As far as what I can use ... heck, send me some of your pastry creations! :D I'm sure we can find something ... ;)

Welcome to the boards!

Missindi: I would love some Chaat Masala and come to think of it some Garam Masala. DH always bugs me for Indain food and the only reason why I don't make it is because I can't find the spices I need. I know I could make them from scratch but my time is precious. I also run a gym club and teach aerobics (to burn all the pastry calories!;) Right now I am procrastinating typing my exam for Sport Nutrtition Consultant...!
I am so exciting to have my computer fixed and to be able to post, at last!

Jen: thanks for the welcome! Charleston is indeed a great town and there is a restaurant at every corner. My dream is to spot Tyler Florence when he comes to town. He is an alumni of J&W here and he is such a dish!

Thanks for offering to type my exam. I keep modifying and adding/deleting some stuff as I go along. This exam is so difficult but I am learning a ton in the process.

Now that you mention it, some spices for tandori would be nice. There is an Indian restaurant here that put something in their rice that makes it so fragrant but they won't tell me what and I can't figure it out! Any suggestions?

A lot of them use something simple like fresh cilantro, chopped up with Basmati rice. I'll dig up some recipes for you. In the meantime, PM me your address and I'll go Thursday to pick you up a bunch of spices. :D

Eh, I started the thread, I think we can go off-topic a bit. Long story short ... YEARS ago, I had an office support service, basically providing all sorts of secretarial services to people that didn't have enough work to support their own secretary (typing, resumes, proposals, presentations, copies, binding, faxing, etc.). I did it for about 5 years and although I loved it, decided I liked a regular paycheck more (living on my own, before I even met my dh). I kept a few of the "good" clients, and still do their work. I have been toying with the idea of starting to promote it again, but really not sure I have enough time. As far as where do I find the time? I don't go to bed that early, and I try to be really organized. ;) Try being the operative word. If you want any more info, feel free to PM/e-mail me ... you know where to find me. :D

Missindi: nah, it's not frsh cilantro they use, more like a blend of dried spices, can't never put my finger on it though...
Eh guys, should I add that I am born and raised in France, married a wonderful American and been here over 8 years, which is going to explain why sometimes I sound like a complete food snob,..oh well..ya'll are warned (notice the ya'll, ya'll!)

Surprisingly enough, the box was in perfect condition. My dh worked for Fedex for 16 years so I know how rough the boxes get sometimes. ;)

Kinda a reverse swap here ... anyone want dried lemongrass? I have a brand new package that arrived from Penzey's the other day. Takers?

Well darn it sneezles I thought it would be extracts since that is what they claim they are, oh well that is the best a chicken like me can do until I get enough guts to start ordering online and take a walk on the other side;) .

I have some, but I think I mail ordered it. I think King Arthur and Watkins may be sources -- and places that sell candy making supplies.

Got my packages from MaryH and Gracie!!!!! Yeah!

Gracie - that's the biggest bottle of soy sauce I've ever seen. I'm going to have to go dig up more recipes. And I was hoping to get the dried chilies past DH but he opened the package before I could stop him. I'll just have to sneak them in the food when he's not looking!

MaryH - I made the Honey Molasses Roasted Chicken Thighs the very night your Pomegranate Molasses arrived. They were excellent!

Thanks to all! I love this thread!

Jen, given your newfound love (and sourcing!) of pomegranate molasses, I thought you might be interested in the below. Read it in a food blog.

Pomegranate Barbecue Sauce:Recipe

I can barely believe it, but my bottle of pomegranate molasses is almost empty! To think I bought it just a little over six months ago. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of it--stews, marinades, salad dressing, kebabs and now, barbecue sauce. It occurred to me just a few weeks ago that its distinctive tangy flavor would be perfect for ribs or meaty vegetables like mushrooms or eggplant. So I began experimenting with it until I came up with a recipe I liked.

Fresh pomegranate is a labor intensive ingredient, but pomegranate molasses adds a rich taste to sauces, soups and stews with a minimum of effort. My theory is that it is used in Middle Eastern cooking much like wine is used in Western cooking. It adds fruitiness, acidity and depth of flavor, though unlike wine, it is already "reduced" to a thick syrupy consistency. It also adds a beautiful dark ruby color to glazed meats or vegetables. I particularly like the Cortas brand which you can find in Middle Eastern markets and gourmet shops. At under $3 for a 10oz bottle, it's a bargain.

I often make country style pork ribs because they are inexpensive, readily available in supermarkets and you can cook them easily in the oven. Boil the ribs for 30 minutes, then coat them with barbecue sauce and bake in a 400 degree oven, for 20 minutes, basting frequently. Almost any barbecue sauce will work, but this one helps cut through the richness of the meat.

Tangy Pomegranate Barbecue Sauce
Makes 3/4 cup

1/2 c ketchup
3 T pomegranate molasses
2 T honey
1 clove of garlic
hot sauce to taste (Tabasco or other)

Press the garlic through a garlic press, add the rest of the ingredients and stir until thoroughly mixed. Add as many drops of hot sauce as you like. Use this sauce on spare ribs, chicken, tempeh, eggplant, or portabello mushrooms. The flavor of the sauce will intensify when it cooks.

Enjoy!
