I stopped buying VT about a year ago as I didn't like the direction it was taking. Most of the recipes just looked unappealing, time consuming and called for hard to get or "weird' ingredients. They revamped the magazine in January and so far I love the changes. I just picked up the March issue and its a winner. There are lots of quick and easy recipes (they survyed thei readers before they made changes and this was the number one request). One of my favourite articles is one which matches recipes with classic movies like Cassablanca, Stuart Little and Moonstruck. Very clever and fun to read.
I think they have hot a nice balance of fancy dishes with family pleasing ones. The nutrtion info is nothing new but still well written. There are a few short gardening and fitness articles but the emphasis is on recipes. If you haven't looked at this magazine in awhile it's worth a second look.:)
I will say though the price is crazy-7.00 CDN! The subscription rate really saves money and since I am sure I will want ti every month that is the route I am taking.
One last thing- the covers have been beautiful too.:)

Thanks for letting us know!! I also had let my subscription lapse and stopped buying it because I wasn't finding anything I wanted to cook from it any more. I'll go check it out again.

I actually have a subscription -- and I do have to agree that the improvements have been impressive!

For one, the format of the magazine is just SO MUCH MORE attractive!

My only complaint is that they DO tend to rely a bit more on pre-packaged veggie ingredients these days... which is kind of disappointing. Sure, it makes recipes faster and easier -- but sometimes I find that attempting the recipe if you choose NOT to buy convenience products is a bit of a trick.

But overall -- kudos to Veg Times!! ;)

That's good to hear! I let my subscription lapse a few years ago because it seemed like they were just re-printing the same recipes over and over. I'll have to look for the new issue at the store.

I was also going to stop my subscription because I really didn't like the direction the magazine was taking. But I agree Maureen, they have definitely made an imporovement! I was very happy to see better recipes, article and of course layout. I agree that I don't really like pre-prepared products (faux meats) so I do wish they didn't have recipes with them. However, that is just my personal dislike.

I actually just ordered a 3-year subscription for VT on ebay for $10, so this is great news!

NewMrsG,
That is a great deal. I was just debating about searching for a good deal when I have to renew VT...thanks for the idea!

I have seen it at the library in the past, but never really saw anything that jumped out at me. We are NOT vegetarian, but I like to try all kinds of recipes. I'll have to give it another look the next time I'm there.

Good to know, Maureen! DBF (who is much more inclined to a vegetarian diet than I) bought a copy in November, in hopes I'd be inspired. It reminded me of the icky "health food diets" of the 1970s.
I'll look again, as I do prepare a good number of vegetarian dinners...

I've had a gift subscription for almost 8 years. For the past 2 years or so, I have made very few recipes from VT because nothing really appealed to me anymore. The recipes were almost TOO simple. I know that is what a lot of people wanted, but with all the prepackaged "veggie meats" in the recipes, I thought VT had gone too far with the idea.

Anyway, I do have to say that the format and recipe quality has improved over the past few months. I don't remember the name of the feature, but they have a section in the magazine that highlights a particular ingredient - last month was clementines, I believe. This is definitely my favorite section of VT. Now I look forward to seeing the new issue arrive, although not with the same anticipation as the new Cooking Light!

OK, they need to give referral bonuses! As a result of this thread, I picked up VT at the B&N this weekend and I love it! I was quoting statistics out of it all weekend. Many of the recipes look delicious as well. I also used to get this magazine and left after never using it, so this is a welcome change indeed.
