Through the years that I have received CL magazine I have noticed that a decent amount of their recipes have called for reduced-fat cheddar cheese/no-fat cheddar cheese. I have only been able to find these types of cheddar in the pre-shreded bags. I do not like the pre-shredded cheese because of the dirty feel to it, plus I think it lacks flavor. Has anyone ever found any of the above mentioned cheeses in block form? If so, what was the brand and where did you find it?

I can almost always find the Kraft and Cracker Barrel (I think this is made by Kraft) cheddar that is made with 2% milk in block form, and this is what I usually use because I think it tastes and melts better (although I think the fat content may be a little higher). I've never really thought about it, but I think most other low-fat and no-fat cheddar that I have seen is also pre-shredded.

My favorite is Cabot. It comes in 75% fat free or 50% fat free. I saw it mentioned in CL as a 'favorite' and looked until I found it at Trader Joe's. I use the 50% fat free and actually like it. My grocery store carries regular Cabot and had I not found it at TJ's I was planning on asking them to order it.

I've never been able to find Cabot's reduced fat. I use the block of Kraft reduced fat. Only one of the 4 grocery stores that I shop at (the largest one) carries the reduced fat Kraft cheeses. I didn't think to check Cracker Barrel.

I also really like Cabot's 50% cheddar. I've never liked the rubbery feel of the lowerfat cheeses but this one is excellent. I live in SC and have to look in particular stores to find it...not all of them carry this brand of cheese.

I use Cracker Barrel reduced fat. It's delicious.

You might also check at the deli section. Our groceries carry reduced fat cheese and deli meats. I've never tried Cabots but have had Alpine Lace and Boars Head.
