I see the Schwan delivery truck pull up at a few neighbors' houses and I wonder what he delivers... The milk delivery thread made me wonder. Does anyone use Schwan's? What do you use it for? Would you recommend it?

What is Schwan?

I use Schwan's mostly for frozen meats, vegetables and juices. Their chicken breasts, steaks, etc... are all very good, and since they are individually frozen they keep very well. However, their foods are more targeted towards families with children and it is difficult to find a lot of "light" foods in the catalog. But, when you want to indulge, their ice cream is wonderful!

You can also pre-order on their website, very handy, http://www.schwans.com

I love Schwan products, and YES he delivers once every two weeks to our house. Their frozen vegetables are very high quality, and nice to have on hand when you need them. I absolutely love their low-fat praline adlmondine sundae ice cream! It is by far the best low-fat ice cream I have ever tasted.

Their pieroges are also very good, and my sons like their pizza. I have ordered from them for years---and have tried almost every product. Some we didn't like---but most of their items are good quality.

If I think of anything else, I'll post them.

I see the truck all the time. One of my neighbors gave me a catalog once but it seemd like Costco--everything in big packages. Is that still true?

Absolutely--most everything is in big packages. They do have a few things that can be bought in smaller containers. Like 1/2 gallon containers of ice cream and frozen soup containers with 2 servings.

When I was young my mom bought their mini deep dish pizzas... we LOVED them!

My mom's been using them for 20 years, including the whole time I was growing up. It's been great for her. She lives in a small rural town of about 6000 that has only one grocery store (which is VERY over priced). Any shopping she does, she has to drive to the neighboring town 30 miles away. Schwan's home delivery helped to minimize those trips. Buying frozen food and traveling that distance could sometimes be a bit of a challenge. Schawan's food is very good. And considering travel time and the cost of gas, the price was comparable.

Hmmm, I was wondering what the post was about.

Is Schwan's a regional or national chain? I have never heard of them.

My MIL orders from the schwan man. It all seems like good food, espically the meats. I like how everything is individually wrapped and frozen, she can just pull a few chicken breasts out at a time. I agree their ice cream and frozen yogurt is really good. It's funny because my in laws live in Northern Michigan, where everything is at least a 30 minute drive from home, they stock up on everything. So they have 2 fridges and 3, yes 3, full size deep freezers, and a HUGE pantry in the basement. I always tell my MIL that I could do my grocery shopping in her kitchen!

Thanks for the link to Schwann's. My SIL has been singing their praises for over a year now. We saw a truck in our area but didn't know how to contact them. We live in a very small town (pop 260 after last census) and have to drive 20 or 40 miles one way to shop (depending on which store we choose-not that I ever considered Super Wal-Mart much of a chooice!).

They must be national because my Mom lives in Texas and Mandy said her MIL live in Northern Michigan.

Hmmmm. I went to the site but can not find if they in my area (Massachusetts). I typed in the zip code but didn't get any listing or information. Does anyone know if they are in MA? Thanks http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I don't have Schwans deliver to my house because I wouldn't order enough to make it worthwhile. However, my SIL always has the Schwans frozen chocolate yogurt at their house. The first time I tried it, I thought that I must have mis-read the carton and that it was really chocolate ice cream (which is heavenly). But no, I went back and it was frozen yogurt. It was fabulous! And I'm pretty picky about ice cream!

Mamasue;

I live in NH and my mother uses the Schwan's guy. I would imagine that they'd be in MA, since NH is motoriously behind you when it comes to things like this!

I love their Southern biscuits. I could eat ten of them in one sitting!

Rae - Schwan's policy has always been that there is no obligation to buy anything, and there is no minimum order. So I wouldn't worry about it being "worthwhile".

Schwans delivers on schedule (once every two weeks in my area), and they don't deliver "on request". If you just don't want to order something the day they come, that's fine. I have done that a few times (not many). The way I look at it---they are in the neighborhood anyway! And BTW, the Schwan "men" (haven't had any females yet) are soo nice - they'll even load the food in your freezer if you ask them!

They do in fact have delivery to Massachusetts. When I was a teenager the people I used to babysit for used to have the little pizzas. Needless to say I think I gained about 10 pounds that summer http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
