Help...I need a substitue for anisette as I have so many liquers but not that one. I hate to have to buy a whole bottle for 2 teaspoons. Thanks.

Sorry I don't know a substitute. Something you might check into: our chain drug stores in their liquor departments sell small airplane size bottles of the liqueurs.

I would think Uzo, Sambuco or Arak would work - they are all licorice flavored. (I am assuming that anisette is from the anise family.) Uzo is Greek, Sambuco - Russian and Arak - Middle Eastern - but all the same idea and flavor.

My liqueur suggestions would be the same as Mary's, but you could probably also substitute anise extract in a smaller amount.

Cook's Thesaurus (www.foodsubs.com) suggests
anis OR anise extract (Substitute one teaspoon anise extract for each tablespoon of anisette.) OR Pernod OR ouzo OR pastis OR sambuca.
Hope this helps....

Check to see if your liquor store sells anisette in the little nip size bottles, if so you probably would have enough from 1 bottle to make your recipe twice.
Good Luck Ann

Thank You everyone. I tried the liquor store for a small airplane size bottle but lucked out. Had a nice smile for trying the drugstore...Not in this country. Canada. I did use Pernod and I think it worked fine. Another thought was Fennel but couldnt figure out what to do with the seed. Squish them maybe.
