I hate flossing. I know it only takes 2 minutes, but when I'm dead tired and about to fall asleep over my books at night, it's a wonder I even manage to brush, let alone floss.

UNTIL NOW!

I found this great stuff at the store called Essentialfloss by Oral-B. It comes in a cute little round dispenser, and it's more like tape than floss. It doesn't shred, it grips my fingers so it's not always slipping through, and best of all, it tastes SOOOO good! It's so minty that it makes my mouth taste like I've just brushed, even if I haven't yet.

Yum. Just thought I'd out the word out for fellow floss-haters.:D

Very timely Rebecca. I just went to the dentist on Thursday for a cleaning and got the semi-annual dressing down from the hygenist (and this immediately after a job interview. I thought the only thing that would make the day complete would be a nice round of bathing suit shopping). I hate it when they ask you the 'trick' question: "So, do you floss regularly?" when they know perfectly well from looking at your teeth and gums whether you do or not. Do they teach them that in Dental Hygiene 101? How do they get into that field anyway? When pondering career goals what could possibly be appealing about scraping crap off of people's teeth all day? Is the money extraordinary or something? Are they closet sadists? I long ago stopped lying about my flossing failings and now deal with their horror - as if I've just admitted to torturing small animals in my spare time.

Linda:
I told my hygenist and my dentist that I know I'm supposed to floss and I don't. I don't want to hear ANY lectures about why I should floss. Our compromise is that I go every 4 months instead of every 6 months for a cleaning and I haven't heard a word about flossing in 10+ years. Everybody is happy :D That said, I do use stim-u-dents on a somewhat regular basis and they do help your gums and its MUCH easier than flossing IMHO.

Rebecca-

We've been using Glide floss, which sounds like something similar. The tape goes between the teeth much easier than the round floss. However, I have to make sure I get the regular size and not the wide tape- the wider style is awful.

I didn't floss either until my dentist threatened gum treatment if my gums didn't improve. I have no idea what gum treatment is, but it doesn't sound like fun!

Linda - I agree with you, I couldn't do that as a job. (And the stinky breath too)

Or work with feet.

Either one of them, would make me go Ewwwwww..

note - my dental hygienist loves her job and apparently it is a stable job because she could not find any openings when she considered moving to a new area.

I don't know -- at least 2 of my high school friends became dental hygenists. One classmate is now a mega dentist (high profile and lots of cosmetic work) in this area. I wouldn't want any of those jobs, even though I know the dentist is making mega bucks.

My dentist gives Glide samples, and I like it too. My teeth are so tight in places that I have trouble with shedding or catching and this has made it a lot easier.

Hmm, not extraordinary, but certainly not bad. My SIL used to work 3 days/week in a very busy practice as a dental hygenist and brought home about $55k/year. That was about 8-9 years ago. I assume it would be more these days. Not bad for only part-time work. Now she's semi-retired (at 49) and is the "on-call" hygenist for when someone is sick or on vacation. Not sure how much she makes now.

Another Glide lover here, but I buy the store-brand knock off which works just as good.

I've been told from the dental hygenist that the Glide floss and anything like it doesn't do as good of a job as other flosses. She was saying she hates how the other dental hygenist recommends it to her patients. She said the other hygenist recommends it only because she knows that using that floss was better than not flossing at all and she just wants to make people get flossing.

Anyhow, the floss that I use and I LOVE - it is very easy to use - is REACH Gentle Gum Care. It is not the typical material that regular floss is made of, it is almost cottony. Because of this different material it really seems to clean stuff out of your teeth and carry it away. It is not at all thick (not like that stuff they use at the dentist  ) so all you floss-haters should give it a try!

I hate flossing and I figured out that one reason I hate it is because of the string around my fingers. So I started out using floss-picks, and now I have a Reach Access flosser. It works really well - it has a handle like a toothbrush. I'm still not religious about flossing, but now at least I do it more often than never;)

I finally tried the Essentialfloss based on your recommendation, rebecca. thank you!! it is awesome. Glide doesn't work for me. it slips off my fingers and is still too thick to go between my tightly spaced teeth. I never used to floss, but this makes it easy. I didn't even get the flavored kind and I still love it. I have tried about 7 different kinds of the supposedly-thin floss but none has worked for me until I found this one.

I must be the exception to the rule.
I always floss.
My parents and twin sister have had horrible issues with their teeth and witnessing my sister's gum surgery at the ripe old age of 24 only ensured I would do everything I knew was good for oral hygiene.
I get whatever is on sale but I make sure to use it.

My dentist and hygenist are always mystified that my cleaning is over before it gets started...

Genetically, I am doomed for dental ickiness and I hope I can delay it until the state-of-the-art stuff is cheap and good :)

Ha, Linda. I feel the same way!

I am another one that tells my hygenist "Look. I don't floss, doubt I'll ever floss - get over it." I go every 4 months to make up for it.

I. Hate. Flossing.

Beckms - thanks for the recommendation - I do keep floss around just in case I'm feeling virtuous. I'll look into this.
