So, DH and I have a cold. We've had it for over a week. I was getting better, and now I have this mega sore throat that hurts even when I open my mouth.

I don't want to run to the dr. because we've been there twice with our 3-month-old in the last week. But then again, I hope I don't have something that needs antibiotics.

So, how long do you put up with a sore throat before considering it serious? I don't want to be one of those people who runs to the dr. with every cough and sneeze.

Are you running a fever? Anything else hurt? I would check it out if the answer to either of the above is yes, since it could be strep throat which can lead to nasty complications if untreated.

If it hurts more than normal, I would still go or at least call your doctor. Better safe than sorry

Feel better soon.

I'd go if I have any swelling. I put up with a sore throat for 4 or 5 days this winter but didn't have any swelling nor trouble getting over it, FWIW.

Are you running a fever? Do you have swollen glands? Thay could indicate an infection that may require antibiotics. Can you or DH look to the back of your throat? Is it only red (anything -- including the cold) or do you see white spots or streaks (could need antibiotics)? Do you have any rashes (strep can cause a rash)? Is strep going around -- do you think you were exposed to it? Those things and the fact that you are feeling worse after a week instead of starting to feel better would have me thinking it might be time to go in -- or at least make a call.

Thanks, guys. I don't have a fever. But it is spreading up into my ear. I think I'll see how I'm doing tomorrow before calling the dr. It's all on my left side, and it feels like it's the muscle that's sore ... not just a usual scratchy throat thing.

Sounds like you could have an ear, sinus or gland infection brewing -- or at least the congestion and pressure that could lead to one. They often follow the cold by a week or two. Try warm compresses where it hurts, saltwater if it helps soothe your throat, saline nasal spray can help clear you nose asnd sinuses and may help relieve pressure. Maybe you can still dodge the bullet. Hope you feel better soon.
