Katie- I'm so sorry your cake didn't turn out right! We just finished the last peice of our cake last night. It really turned out great. Maybe a different shape pan would help? Your post about eating the burnt crust did make me laugh, though! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Katie-pie, I really enjoyed your post. It's so true about the sacrifices we make for our families. I don't know how many burnst toast I ate "cause I like it that way".

I remember just last week, I had just fixed myself a delicious salad for one. Nobody was home, and I thought it was just me for lunch. My son came home unexpectedly, and I gave him my salad, claiming I had just finished eating the "other one.".

Maybe something's wrong with me, but I would just pitch the cake before I would eat the hard crust and pretend I liked it. Same goes with burnt toast. I have no problems pitching a burnt bagel or piece of toast and fixing more. However, I will take the smaller piece of meat on most ocassions.

Katie-Pie, I know you were upset about the cake and all, but really, your post just cracked me up! I am a terrible baker, and I know exactly how you feel. The way you explained the situation was so funny. Anyway, just had to say thanks for making me laugh today.

Katie, your post is hilarious! I will cooking the most complicated recipe, but I simply cannot bake--made about four dozen assorted biscotti once and they could have been used for clay pigeons at the local firing range. Thanks for the laugh.

Please don't think I'm always a grump...

I made the Eating Well Chocolate cake last night for my mom's visit this weekend. Ahhh! I just don't enjoy baking near as much as I enjoy cooking.

Anyway, my cake turned out oddly. The experienced bakers will say, "Well duh", when I share this. I tried to bake two things at once. Bad idea. When I went to take the cake out, it was still runny. At that moment my husband came in the room after hearing me rant and asked what I was doing. He told me that I can't bake this way--two things at once. I think he's bright, but really, how did he know?

Once the middle set, I took it out of the oven and let it cool. I removed it from the pan and discovered it had a two inch perimeter of hard crust. The center seems moist. Anyway, I'll cut the crust off and be the schlep who opts to eat it. I'll say, "No, no. I love the burned edges. That's my favorite part." Then I'll sit there and try to cut a bite with my fork and won't be able to. I'll look around and everyone else will be happy but me. I learned the grin, lie, and bear it from my mom. She always eat the smallest pork chop claiming she wasn't that hungry, the burned toast saying that's how she likes it, and the hard butt end of the meatloaf, telling us that it was her favorite part. Well, this weekend, the chocolate cake crust is my favorite. Who's ever heard of freaking crust on a cake? Only my concoction...

Just needed to vent about my experience...I feel better now--this doesn't mean that Katie-pie's giving up!

Katie, I gotta ask...how did the other item in the oven come out? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Katie-pie,

Hang in there. The first time I made this cake, I made it to take to work for a co-worker's birthday. I made it in a Bundt pan, and it just fell apart when I took it out of the pan. Threw that down the garbage disposal because I certainly could not take it to work, and leaving an entire cake around my house, crumbled to pieces or not, is dangerous. I will eat the whole thing in a couple of days. However, because of all the great reviews for the cake on this BB, I tried again a few days later. The second time, I made it in an oblong cake pan, and it was delicious!!!

The other thing baking was a pan of lemon bars...just the crust at that point. I took it out when I learned baking two things at once wasn't happening.

The lemon bars were yummy. Not CL, a boxed brand. Turned out well.

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel a little silly for my post--but I feel much better. Thanks girls!

Jewel--I wish you luck this month. Hang in there!

I find myself oddly attracted to "ranting" posts. Your was a scream. I am a terrible baker also - too much precision for me! I just made focaccia that tastes oddly of movie theater popcorn!? I think I added too much oil....

I friend suddenly stopped by friday night, so I just invited her to dinner. It was supposed to be spaghetti and meatballs, but I got lost in the conversation and stupidly added the meat balls to the red sauce raw! By the time it was done I was calling it (please forgive) puke & pasta. Looked awful, tasted . . . well, I couldn't get past what it looked like.

I made this cake this weekend after reading so much both good and bad about it. The batter was extremely thin and I was NERVOUS putting it into the oven. It actually turned out perfect, much to my own surprise.
