View Full Version : What brand of coffee?
After reading all the posts about coffee pots, I was wondering what brands of coffee does everyone use? We love Dunkin Donuts but thats not always convenient to have on hand.
Haven't found any other brand that compares.Any suggestions?

I was going to say DD!!
I recommend one of these (get them confused)
Chock Full 'O Nuts - whole beans? Reasonably priced too.
Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee - maybe a store brand.

I fully admit that I am a sucker and pay way to much for my coffee beans. I always fall victim to the wonderful aromas in the little coffee shops in my town. My two personal favorites are chocolate rasberry and bananas foster. I always have tons of gourmet flavored beans on hand.
However I also admit that aside from brewing my own at home - I absolutely love DD coffee. The know how to make it light& sweet like no one else.

If you like really dark, flavorful coffee, Peets is great! The original owner taught the founders of Starbucks how to do their thing, but Peets still does it better, IMHO.

I love Gevalia coffee. When I see coffee on sale in the SM it usually is Chock FON or Folgers.

Love Gevalia's Cinnamon coffee.
Also love Illy (thanks again for my can of coffee, Laura B.)
And, for takeout, I love Dunkin' Donuts.
The best! Starbucks just tastes burned, IMHO.

Cafe Campesino coffee is my favorite. Their Southern Pecan roast is out of this world. Plus, they are a "fair trade" coffee organization. You can find them at www.cafecampesino.com. (http://www.cafecampesino.com.)

No brand. Just make sure it's Kona-- preferably NOT a blend.

Like Gail, we drink Kona. Ferrari is our brand.

Angela,
Thanks for posting about Cafe Campesino. I hadn't heard of fair trade organizations until I went to their website. I'm going to try them out and also look into other fair trade organizations. It seems to be something that I definitely want to support.
Jill
I don't have a particular brand but I try and buy organically or shade grown coffee. This usually means the coffee is not a product of slash and burn agriculture or deforestation. It is often also 'fair-trade' and puts more of the benefits back to the actual growers.

I always buy my coffee from this specialty shop in NYC, called Porto Rico. Everytime I leave that place, I smell like a walking coffeebean. They have the best quality in coffees and teas.. At my previous job, an Italian bank, we always used Illy for espresso. Oh, how I miss that!
Also, as a former Dunkin Donuts girl, thank you. We do make good coffe. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I know it's not politically correct, but I live with a Starbucks fanatic. My SO loves Starbucks so much, that no matter where we travel, we have got to find a Starbucks or I have to deal with pouting all day. In fact, I was told that London was much better this last trip because there were round green signs all over the place.
We have found some others we like, but our everyday coffee has been mostly Cost Plus' Italian roast (for making our espresso)which we usually mix 50/50 with the darkest roast of decaf available, sometimes Espresso, sometimes French. Over the course of 10 years, DH has converted me entirely to dark roasts, but I still tease him about drinking mud (triple shots or quad of straight espresso).

I usually buy either Folgers Lite (this is currently in my freezer) or Maxwell Lite. The reason being convience & cost.
When I lived in Seattle, I used to buy Seattles Best, which I really like.
My favorites are Eight O'Clock's French Roast & Lite. I have been told that their Amaretto is out of this world, but haven't tried it. It's hard to find Eight O'Clock coffee though (it is made by A&P, and they are out of NJ).

Angelina, I used to go to Porto Rico for my coffee when I lived in NY! You brought back fond memories.
We like to buy Equal Exchange coffee when we can get it (they sell it at Trader Joe's and there's also a website www.equalexchange.com (http://www.equalexchange.com) that gives links to other retail outlets). It's very reasonably priced organic coffee: we can get their Organic French Roast for $7/lb. Compare that to Starbucks or Seattle's Best organic which I think is something like $12/lb. Plus, Equal Exchange works with cooperatively-owned coffee farms in areas where coffee farmers are often exploited by big coffee companies (like in Guatemala, Chiapas, etc.). And the coffee is terrific! When we run out of Equal Exchange and I can't get to Trader Joe's we buy Safeway brand french roast which is surprisingly good for a fair price (about $7/lb when it's not on sale). Occasionally we also buy Starbucks at the grocery store if it's on sale.

My favorite is European coffee. I have tried and tried to duplicate the flavor at home but it is just not the same. I don't know if it is the beans, the type of roast, the water or the croissants that make it so good. I also think that the 6 oz. glass bottles of Coke also taste much better than the Coke available in the States.

We buy our coffee from a place in Alska called Raven's Brew Coffee. We saw an ad in a magazine once and tried it. We've been hooked ever since.
I used to belong to Gevalia. I couldn't drink the coffee fast enough and it was building up in my freezer. When I got married, my husband and I drank Gevalia for 6 months to use up my stockpile!

My husband and I like 8 o'clock bean a lot. It's probably the best coffee that I've ever bought in a grocery store. it's easy to find around here. Food Lion and Harris Teeter both carry it.
If we're buying specialty coffee, we like Torrafazione Italia. The Napoli blend is good for espresso.
The post on European coffee made me giggle, because the nastiest thing in the world is coffee brewed in Ireland. I'm sure you were talking about the continent, Miamedre, but your post brought back horrible, horrible memories of getting instant coffee in coffee shops. After about a week there I learned to stick to the tea http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif.

DD gets my vote, and also Safeway grocery store brand (theire Irish Cream whole bean) is very good. But, the best coffee I've ever had was at the Hilton hotel in Albuquerque NM! We had our college class graduation dinner there -- I asked the waiter what kind of coffee it was, but I didn't remember the name http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif (I do remember that it was hard to pronounce and think I'd recognize it if I saw or heard it again)--it was a South American coffee, I believe from Guatemala or Venezuela. Wish I could remember because it was pure heaven http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif!!

JLS: There are Seattle's Best shops in the DC area -- at least in Gaithersburg. But the Union Station Au Bon Pain sells Peets beans -- or at least they did when I was with the Senate and stopped every day after getting off the red line.
We generally use Trader Joe's coffee -- the one with the toucan on the label. It's been so long that I just grab the toucan that I've forgotten what kind of coffee it is. But whenever we travel to Salt Lake City, we always buy a few pounds at the Salt Lake Roasting Company. They do a terrific job. When opening the overhead bins upon arriving back home, the smell is heavenly.

Starbucks House Blend whole beans (the kind you can get in the grocery store; we do not have a Starbucks). My sister got me some Seattle's Best on a trip to Seattle -- I thought it was the best coffee I ever had.

The best coffee I ever had was the Blue Mountain coffee we had a couple of years ago in Jamaica. I have had other Blue Mountain coffee, but there was just something about that coffee in Jamaica. Hopefully, we'll go back again and I'll be able to bring/send back lots of beans!!
I also cancelled my Gevalia membership because I just didn't drink it fast enough. I think I had 10 or 12 packages in my freezer at one point. I gave some of them to a friend's husband for Christmas.

JHolcomb:
FYI, Torrefazione Italia is the sister company to Seattle's Best Coffee (I sell Seattle's Best wholesale). I personally think it's the best, next to German coffee, but that's only because I know soooo much about how it's made. And, for those that are interested in knowing, Seattle's Best is a Fair Trade organization!
Seattle's Best only buys the top 1% and 2% quality shade-grown arabica beans in the world. There is a 3rd generation master coffee roaster in Seattle that does all the roasting. It's good stuff.
Sales pitch is over. Sorry! (But I really DO believe in the product! Makes it easy to sell!).
As far as German coffee goes, I like Tschibo and Dallmeyer. I also like LaVazza from Italy (as ubiquitous there as Starbucks is here).
I just have to share a practical joke one of my co-workers pulled one day. He put chickory 'coffee' in the office coffee pot one morning. This evidently was not the favorite brand of anyone at work that day. Once someone tried the coffee they just had to hang around and watch the next coffee drinker. We certainly saw a lot of interesting expressions after that first sip.

I have tried several of the Trader Joe's coffees, the Italian, the French Roast, and the Kona, all are very good. The price is more reasonable than some, as well.
We live in the Seattle area and get a very luscious coffee called "Cafe Apasionato" which we get at the grocery store. I do not know if it is widely available or not. It is in my opinion the best available.

I buy my SEATTLE coffe in Costco. I usually by the french roast Columbia Supremo.
The price is VERY CHEAP 2# for $6.49 I think.
This is a full 2# bag, not the chincy cans with only 11 or 13 ounces!
These beans are roasted daily, right in front of your eyes.
If you have a Costco near you, give it a try!
Even my "picky" son buys it there! Used to get coffee in Trader Joe's years ago, but I like this much better.

I'm from Colombia and one of the best (and quite reasonably priced) is Eight O'Clock 100% Colombian. Grind it at on the "Fine setting or finer for a rich cup of coffee.
Thanks for the tip junie ! I will have to keep an eye out!
For all you gevalia buyers...do you know that you can call them and they will suspend the delivery for a few months. Or you can have them adjust the frequency of deliveries. ( I think I used to get a box every 3 mos.)

Grace-
Just wanted to let you know that my husband was thrilled that you validated our love for Torrefazione Italia. Good to know that it's fair trade, too.
I also posted again because I forgot about my fav coffee ever-Yemeni coffee. My husband had a roommate whose parents lived in Yemen and would send him bricks of the most wonderful coffee ever. I've never had any coffee that was so chocolatey. I also love the Turkish coffee at Silk Road in Chapel Hill. It comes kinda close to the Yemini.

I have to say having just recently come back from Jamaica that the Blue Mountain coffee is absolutely fabulous. Brought about 8 lbs. back and just grind and freeze - excellent coffee.

Gevalia is too expensive - if I remember right, $8 for 1/2 lb! I know we got it as a wedding gift and I just canceled it after a while. We drink Jelks Kona. If I am feeling cheap, I will just go and get Folger's at the grocery store - oh, they're putting in a Costco within walking distance - is that place like Sam's Club? Blue Mountain from Jamaica is excellent but unforunately the coffee I brought back was terrible. Don't know what happened there...

Gail - I bought Kona beans yesterday - just having the first cup - OMG what a treat - you are so right! Was hooked on the Blue Mountain from Jamaica that we brought back - but this is heaven! Now how much would you pay for this in the US? It was $35.99 a pound - I bought just over 1/2 lb. to try - is that a lot more than you would pay?

Gail and other Kona lovers,
When my husband and I were in Hawaii we absolutely loved the Kona coffee and would have way too many cups at breakfast. I really have never found a brand of Kona (and I am not talking about a blend of Kona) that equals what we had in Hawaii. If you have a great source for Kona please share it.
In the meanwhile we drink Green Mountain coffee the Columbian Supremo but they have all flavors for those who like flavored coffee.
This may seem odd, but I don't like gourmet coffees too much. No offense, but I cannot stand Starbuck's. My favorite is Folger's 100% Columbian. In cooking and to recommend for an instant coffee, I use Medaglia D'Oro instant espresso powder. It has a wonderful aroma and works great in any recipe. I've seen regular Medaglia D'Oro coffee too, but it's far too expensive. I can't drink much of any coffee though as it disturbs my digestive system.

I agree that Madalia D'Oro instant is excellent when a recipe calls for instant coffee powder. It has very full flavor.

My favorite is from The Second Cup in Canada. I find the coffees in the US are too oily and dark roasted. SC offers different roasts - my favorite being "El Toucan" and "La Minita Tarazu". I order them via the internet. Since the prices are in Canadian $, I really get my moneys worth. They are a retail chain in Canada, but one location has a mail order. For those who may be interested, it is http://www.secuco.ca/ . I have tried Peets, Caribou, Coffee Beanery, Baby's Coffee, and do not like them. I only like Caffe Latte's from Starbuck's. I guess it's what you get used to. We all have different taste buds.

Hi, I'm new- But I love Starbucks. But I swear they dose it with 3X the caffeine. Green Mountain makes a great Hazelnut.
Grace, where would you find Seattle's Best in Kentucky? My DH and I love coffee and would like to try.
