Hi all- though I'd start a new thread for the new month. Happy April! Hopefully all sickness is behind us and we can all be happy and healthy and enjoy the arrival of spring!

I am curious about the recent discussions on speech. When they are measuring words spoken and such, do they measure a compelte word, or parts of a word? Zander will say Cook instead of Cookie or Baba for Balloon. Not the exact words- but they always mean the same thing.

We successfully made it on our loooong road trip- and mostly ahd a good time. We learned a few things- like Dramamine is a necessity for car trips longer than 45 minutes. And happy meal toys ARE truly a great thing.

Right before we left I went to Goodwill and bought a huge basket of old happy meal toys. I put them in large Ziploc bags and would pull them out when the kids got crabby. It worked like a charm. It kept them entertained for literally hours at a time- and they didn't cost much so if we lost a couple or broke a couple, it really didn't matter. Great lifesaver.

We really had fun. It was nice seeing family, but I have to say that Disney was the highlight of the trip. Abigail got to meet all the princesses, and that totally made the trip. We are really looking forward to going back in a few years when Zander is old enough to really appreciate it. Although he had a great time too. He was constantly pointing and saying "Look!". I think his favorite part was the parade. It was so much fun. We definitely were on a much needed vacation. (Although it's also nice to be back and be back to normal!)

Ack, I just lost my whole post! I hate it when that happens.

Mrswaz, you’re back! Sounds like you had a wonderful time (although if you’ve learned a lesson about Dramamine, there must have been a not-so-great moment or two!). Your daughter must have been so in awe of the princesses. DH and I love Disney and can’t wait to take Brian someday. And the happy meal toy idea is a great one, I’m going to try to remember that one.

As for speech, I believe I was told that partial words are totally acceptable and that at this age kids aren’t even capable of some consonant sounds yet. The important thing is for the sound to approximate the word and that it’s used consistently for an object. So it sounds like Zander’s doing fine! (I can just imagine how many times you heard “Look!” at Disney, LOL) Someone on the March thread asked about the number of words (was it Amy?). I had asked the evaluators about that, I think I was using Babycenter’s lists as a reference. They said those lists are usually inaccurate, on the high side. I can’t remember though how many words they said an 18- or 19-month-old should be using.

I made two visits this week to a new daycare center that’s opening around the corner from where I work. I’ve been pretty unhappy with the center Brian’s been going to and looking to make a change. It’s called The Learning Experience, and it looked acceptable to me, but I feel so wary now because of our current experience. It seems like everything sounds great until you get into the day-to-day of it, and then things are different from what you were told. I wish I personally knew someone who has their child enrolled but I don’t. I guess I’m going to have to take a chance and just try them out. I am hoping this will be a much different (much better!) experience for us.

How is it April already?? I am still catching up on the March posts!

Mrswaz--what a fun trip! I can't wait to take Lila to Disneyland.

I have been busy preparing for my work trip next week, & adjusting to having DH gone for 13 hours a day, instead of working from home. Boy, were we spoiled with having so much family time. Things really change next week, when DH starts traveling every week (either Sunday or Monday through late night Thursday) every week:eek:

Lila doesn't say much yet (she is 13 months--might still be a little early??). She'll say "Dada" "Mama" & "Hi" pretty consistently, "quack" once in while if we see a duck & one time, "Doggie." Last night she pointed at a shirtless DH & said "Boob!" :o Hopefully she'll keep that one to herself :D

There were quite a few illness/injury threads towards the end of March--I hope everyone is feeling better!

Hi everyone

Natalie is starting to say some words too. She is saying "hi" and "bye bye", is fairly inconsistent with mama and dada. She has a stuffed cow, which she calls "moo" will say "ba" for bath, "ju" for juice. She has recently learned "no no no" as well . She says everything fairly appropriatley, though occasionally gets hi and bye bye mixed up. She also has some signs that she can do, such as "more" "eat" (which she does by pointing to her mouth and saying "eeeeeeeeeee")"all done" (and says "a da"), puppy, help, please, etc. I know there are more words and a few more signs but I'm not thinking of them right now. She really understands way more than she verbalizes. For example, I can say "do you want to go outside and play?" and she will run over to the coat tree, and point at her coat and sign "help". Or, I can say "are you hungry?" and she will go to her highchair and point to her mouth and say "eeeeeee". That kind of thing.

We had kind of a harrowing evening last night. Natalie was vomiting all evening, starting just before we put her to bed, and finally stopped around 8:30. She was up at midnight, for about 20 minutes. IT was really hard, because she was so thirsty and wanted her cup of water, but the doctor told us to only give her sips and of course she wanted to gulp it down. We got her some pedialyte today, and have been giving her bland food and pedialyte all day and she seems to be feeling better. She did take a 2 hr nap this AM and a 2 1/2 hour nap this afternoon, so her little body is just catching up. She has been up in her bed for 1/2 an hour right now, and I can hear her playing.

Amy, sorry to hear about your DH's travel. I am sure that will be hard to have him gone so much. Will Lila stay with your parents when you have to travel too?

Erika, glad you had a good trip to Florida! The longest road trip we have attempted with Natalie was about 10 hours long. She did great until the last 2 hours, and from then on it was a crying fest. But, she was only 5 months old at the time. She may have a harder time now, that she wants to be out and running around.

Lori, good luck with the daycare. We are fortunate that we love our daycare. Of course, there are minor things I don't like, but they are not things about the care that Natalie is getting. One thing that I really like is that her teacher picks up and hugs each of the kids in her room when they come in in the morning. I am not looking forward to having to find a new center when she is too old for this one, but that won't be until she is 3.

ETA that I remembered something else that she is saying. She has a toy that plays Old McDonald Has a Farm and she can sing the e-i-e-i-o part. It often comes out as e-i-o, and sometimes sounds like "yao".

Thanks for getting a started.

I figure if Ella is saying at least part of the word and in general people know what she means that I count it. She seems to being learning a few more words everyday, I've lost count on how many she knows.

Hope all your wobbler moms have been able to enjoy some spring weather like we have here. I'll check back in soon!

Hi everyone. I am so jealous about your trip to Florida Mrs. Waz. We love Florida and are traveling to Destin by car in May. We are so excited but the last time we drove, Caleb was only 6 wks. He did very well. Not sure this time.

He is so much fun. I told him he was "Naughty" the other night and he now says, "Naughy Naughy Naughy". It is so cute! I think he talks more than I first believed. He says juice and dada and Shaylea (our dog) and kitty. And he really understands a lot.

I think he has allergies. I am very runny and stuffy right now, but he has been waking with a cough almost every night lately. He has been sick since August it seems, now allergies?!?!

Oh well, hope all is well with everyone else.

Hi all, it's Spring now so everyone must now be healthy!

Declan had his 15 month appointment today. He's 23.11 pounds and 31 1/2" which makes him kind of tall and kind of skinny. And his ears are pretty much cleared up, thanks goodness.

As far as talking, if he uses a sound consistently to mean something, I count it as a word. So he has around 20 words. The latest are teeth, nose and ear (yes we've been working on naming body parts. He loves to point out or grab his toes). Favorite words are flower, water and no. He's really getting to be a toddler in that regard. The other day I turned around in the car to smile at him and he said "no!"

Lara, How is Natalie doing? better I hope.

Lori, how is the new daycare?

We had been enjoying nice weather but it is supposed to rain again tomorrow. maybe the weather people will be wrong.

OMG, I just had a funny moment with Zander. (Okay, probably funnier to me than you, but cute nonetheless). He loves to pull his shirt up and check his beely button. It's a spot of fascination for him or something, I dunno, but I'm always telling him it's his belly button. Well, we were playing on the floor with Abigail when he lifts her shirt, pokes his finger into her belly button and says "Bee-Bun". OMG, I am still chuckling.

Just had to share. We're loving spring and spending every spare moment outside. Anyone else have to conquer a fear of grass? I've been calling Zander "Princess Zander", he's become a silly about saome things. SO girl-like, it's cute.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Erika

Erika, "bee-bun"! So funny! No fear of grass here, but come to think of it, I don't think Brian's been barefoot in the grass this year. We're hoping to get to the beach this summer and I'm already wondering if he'll have sand fear. I've heard about that from every mom I know. For now, he's enjoying the warmer weather so much (and the extra daylight!) that I have a hard time convincing him to come inside!

Magdon, I'm glad Declan's ears are better. We start at the new daycare in May. I gave notice at our current one, and they didn't have any reaction, didn't ask why, nothing. I know they have a waiting list, so I guess they just called the next people on the list. I still think I will type up a list of what my issues were and give it to them on Brian's last day. They might not care, but maybe it will make me feel a little better.

Not much new here. Brian had a mild virus last weekend, and now he is once again coughing and wheezing a little. Cindy, I'm starting to wonder too if he has allergies, and if that's what's triggering his asthma all the time. Neither DH nor I have allergies, but my mother and brother both have them very bad.

I believe yesterday was Angelamaria's scheduled c-section. Hope all went well!

Erika, that is cute about bee-bun! Don't have a fear of grass to deal with here, so no advice about that. I did buy Natalie a pair of sandals last week, and we were at Target trying them on. She did not like them too much and acted like she didn't know how to walk once they were on her

Lori, glad you have a spot at the new daycare. Our daycare, I think, would like to know about concerns. It doesnt sound like its a situation where you can really talk to the director, though.

Magdon, glad Declan's ears have cleared up. Those darn ear infections are the worst, aren't they? I always thought that if a baby was going to get ear infections, that they would happen as an infant when they tend to be laying down more, but it sounds like your experience is similar to ours in that Natalie never had an ear infection as an infant but now has had 2 as a toddler.

I have been SO busy lately! I have tried several times to post, only to be called away for one reason or another. I am helping some friends of mine with some HR work and I'm doing that one day a week, and so Natalie is going to daycare an extra day during APril. Then, this week I have a baby shower Thursday night and then am leaving for a trip to Chicago on Friday. We come back on Monday afternoon. After that, I think we're going to be home for a while. I feel like I have been doing a ton of traveling lately.

We're all better, for now. I can't wait for spring. We got socked with a big snowstorm on Sunday - we got about 8 inches of snow at our house, but its 54 degrees today. Silly weather!

Last night I gave Natalie a hamburger for dinner. She is not really into eating meat so I didn't know if she would eat it or not, but I got a little container and put some ketchup into it. I showed her how to dip her hamburger piece into the ketchup and eat it, and she did it! It was so funny! I think she ate about 3/4 of the hamburger that I gave to her, so I was pretty happy with that. She then proceeded to just lick the remaining ketchup out of the container, which was really funny.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Lara - I thought of you right away when I saw the storm on the news this weekend!

Glad to hear the babies are healthy these days for the most part. Lori - hope Brian is feeling better soon. Sam developed a cold overnight and was pretty tired today. I hope she sleeps well tonight. Jerry's away so if she gets up, she's all mine.

We've been having a great time playing outside now that the weather is nice. Sam has the best time running around. Of course, with all the outdoor toys and playsets, she likes picking up rocks and leaves the most. :)

Sammy has her 18 month checkup next week. She's such a peanut, so I'm anxious to see how she does on the percentile chart. She's only 23 pounds! My good friend's 6 month old is only 5 pounds less than Sam. Too much!

Hope everyone has had a good week so far,
Sue

Grrrr

I hate stomach viruses.

Dh is out of town, and both kids have been battling something really yucky. Hopefully we've turned a corner here, but argh. As long as Mommy doesn't get it...

Oh my gosh Lara, 8 inches of snow! I think I would cry if we got anymore snow this year.

eh, the snow is gone :D It was fun, though. We actually had snow on the lower end of the totals. I think that Denver officially got 11 or 12 inches, but there were places south of us that got 20+. And in the mountains it was more than that. It makes for great skiing!

Hope the kids are feeling better - those stomach viruses are horrible. We had an episode in February when Natalie got sick and then a few days later DH and I started with it too.

We're going to Chicago on Friday. Keep your fingers crossed that we stay healthy. Natalie got an ear infection after flying the last time, so I really hope that now that it is not winter anymore she will not get another infection. SHe had an ear check last week and the dr. said there was no fluid, so I'm hopeful...

Hi All,

I hope everyone is doing wonderfully! I have been out of touvh for a couple of weeks. I went to NY for work, which went fine. Lila had a great time with my parents. DH has been spending each week in Philadelphia & we are adjusting to that. Luckily, the past two weekends have been pretty mellow, but as spring proceeds, we have several social events to attend & I can see that it will be hard having him gone all week & then only home for a busy whirlwind weekend. I just feel like cocooning on the weekend, but it's not in the cards.

I am just back from visiting a dear friend who had a baby on Saturday. It was amazing to see him & hold him & think back to the early days with Lila. Like everyone says, it's so hard to remember them that little. It almost made me want another baby:p

Lila has a weird eye thing going on. Every few days, it looks like she has a terrible black eye. This is not associated with any falls or bumps. The doctors are stumped. It doesn't seem to be bothering her really. The discoloration starts right in the lower corner of her eye (it's always the same eye). Last night, I gently pulled her lower lid down a little & I can see a tiny (like a pin dot) little bump. I am wondering if maybe it's a sty that is recurring. Have any of you heard of such a thing?

Other than the eye situation, she is doing great. She is getting very opinionated & very toddler-like. She loves to do things that she knows she's not supposed to, such as put her toys in the dogs water dish, stand up in her wagon, etc. What are you all doing for discipline in these early stages. I try diversion, but she is very intent on doing the thing she is not supposed to & making sure I am watching. Sometimes the behavior seems so precocious for such a little thing that I have a really hard time stifling my giggles.

My best,
Amy

Amy, I can commisserate on the DH gone for the week home on the weekends. He's pretty much been working like that here since January. I keep telling myself it could be worse. Last summer he was gone for an entire month at a time. Like you we are also at the busy time of the year on the weekends- and that is super frustrating. Good luck! And we're here to vent to if you need to!

Wow, sometimes I wish my husband was gone during the week, no, just kidding. That must be difficult, especially with a toddler to take care of.
Amy-I had a sty myself a couple of weeks ago, I was putting on makeup and noticed that it looked a little red and a tiny bit swollen. As the day progressed, it started to really swell and hurt, but it didn't come and go. I got some tetracyclene which I only used a few days and it went away. It never looked black and you could feel the bump on top of the eyelid, you couldn't see it under the lid, so I don't know what that could be.
Caleb is back at the doctor again. He has these coughing spells where he coughs so hard his face gets red and he threw up last night because of it. It started out as watery eyes, runny nose, and coughing, but now it is still mostly the cough. I am afraid he has an ear infection, so my husband has him at the doctor again. I wish he would just get over all of this sickness.
Take Care,
Cindy

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all enjoying the nice spring weather. It is supposed to be 83 here today!!!

Sam had her 18 month appt today. She's doing fine, but the doctor is concerned about her weight. She was only slightly less than 21 pounds. He said he wants her to come back in 6 weeks and see how the weight is. She didn't gain any weight since her 15 month appt, but did grow and her height is fine. I told him she eats well, and is much better with her pickiness than she was even a month or so ago. I think she's just so darn active that she's burning it all off.

He also wants to talk about her speech development in 6 weeks, too. She is only saying about 3 words. He's no overly concerned about it, because she understands things, follow directions and is signing words, too. He just said since she'll be coming back for the weight check, he'll revisit her speech development at that time.

Now I just have to figure out a way to get some meat on her bones! :)

Hi again,

Sue, my niece, who is 19 months, is a tiny little thing too--average height, but below 5th percentile for weight. SIL has discovered a few things that are calorie dense & that her picky eater will enjoy...
Yo Baby yogurt
Earth's Best brand cereal type bars They come in a few different flavors. Abby loves the strawberry/PB
Smoothies --you might even be able to sneak some flax oil in to up the calorie & healthy fat content
Avocados

Cindy, maybe Lila doesn't have a sty after all, becasue it sounds quite different than what you expereinced. I defnitley have never heard of a sty causing a black eye. I won't hesitate taking her back to the doctor if/when it flares up again. Her spirits are good, so I don't think it's anything serious. I am wondering if it's allergy related. I hope Caleb feels better soon!

Mrswaz, since you offered me a space to vent :p , this morning Lila pushed her wagon into a table in my living room & broke both the table & the lamp that sits on the table. I will be spending her precious morning nap time dealing with that!

Sue, does Sammy like cottage cheese? I buy the 4% milkfat (the highest one) for natalie and she loves it. I have not tried the yobaby yogurt, but she will eat plain whole milk yogurt, and she drinks whole milk.

Other things I can think of are things like buttering toast - does she eat peanut butter? Natalie loves PB&J, oatmeal, eggs, any kind of cheese.

Natalie is really getting into dipping things in a sauce. Its really funny. Last night she had leftover tortellini for dinner. I wasn't sure how she would eat it, since she is not big on pasta but the tortellini had cheese in it, so I thought that might "entice" her. DH showed her how to dip the pasta into the marinara sauce we had with it the night before. It was so cute! She seemed to like the green (spinach) ones better than the white ones

Natalie loves avocados as well. There are really very few things that she does not like - I'm very fortunate in that respect, I know.

Not too much going on with us. We were in Chicago visiting my Grandma over the weekend, and came home yesterday. Natalie tried to get off of a picnic table bench and sort of stumbled onto the patio while we were there, and she chipped her front tooth a little bit. It was really scary, and I can see the spot that is chipped, but I called a pediatric dentist and they told me that unless its bothering her or it changes color, there really is not anything they can do for her so no sense in taking her in. What an accident prone kid. :(

We had a good visit, though. My Grandma had not seen Natalie since she was 2 months old, so quite a change! Natalie was a big ham the whole time we were there, since she was the only kid and had 3 aunts, her grandpa and great-grandma doting on her. :)

We're home for a LONG LONG time now!

Hi, Wobbler Moms!

I haven't posted in awhile, but have been following all the Wobblers' progress. Shay just turned 20 months and was only 19 lbs, 15 oz (3%!) at 18 months. Her doc was not concerned at all. Her activity level just took off after she started walking and he mentioned their weight gain often tapers off at 18 months because they've discovered their "wheels". :D

Lisa- great to see you back here! Hope you and Shay are doing well.

Thanks to all who gave suggestions on the food. I'm really not worried about her weight, as she eats well, but is just on the go the whole time she's awake. She also only naps once a day, in the morning for about 30 minutes and that's it.

She does love cheese and I gave her extra today and she ate it. She's not wild about PB, but does eat it. She also likes cottage cheese when I mix in chopped pineapple. I will definitely try the smoothies, though. That's a great idea and I know she's enjoy them.

My turn to vent...

The last two weeks The kids and I have been fighting a stomach bug. Nasty nasty thing. The kids got it once, I was lucky enough to experience two rounds of it. Anyway, this week I'm thinking, okay, healthy here we come... Hooray for Pinkeye.

Zander has had a gooey eye for about a week, and while I was watching it, I wasn't overly concerned- just keeping it clean. On Monday Abigail's right eye was so red and puffy, but she had run into the crib the previous night. Then Tuesday her other eye joined the party. I kept asking her if it itched, having never experienced pinkeye before. "No Mommy-it isn't itchy." So I'm doing my best to keep them clean, and now I'm thinking Zander has had an eye infection, so he shared.

Then yesterday my right eye is bothering me. Out come the contacts. This morning I couldn't open either eye, the were so crusted over. (I know TMI, right). Now both of my eyes alternate between this burning scratchy sensation and constant tearing- I mean, it looks like I've been sobbing constantly for days. A call in to my DR. confirms my new suspicion. Pinkeye. Keep our hands clean and let it run its course.

Lesson learned here: Pinkeye does not mean an itchy eye. Symptoms include redness, puffiness around the eye, leaking of pretty yellow-green goo, periods of excessive tearing.

Vent over.

dearamy
04-21-2005, 09:14 PM
Oh no, Mrswaz! What a bummer. I remember having pinkeye from an unfortunate mascara-sharing ( ) in junior high. Not fun. I do remember using an ointment (doctor prescribed) that cleared it up within a day.

I had a few very panicky minutes on Tuesday. I needed to take out the trash (which is just at the side of our house), so I turned on "Little Bear" for Lila, gathered the trash, walked out the side door and...slam! It blew closed & was locked! I ran next door & called Lila's babysitter from their phone (she has a key) & luckily she was home & was at my house within 5 minutes. It felt like an hour. I was really shaken. I could see Lila through the window & she was just standing there watching Little Bear the entire time. Lesson learned--hide key outside.

Welcome back, Lisa!

My best,
Amy

Nothing terribly exciting here, just trying to get us back up on the board :)

We went to Seattle last week, accompanying DH on a biz trip. We saw old friends and played in new playgrounds. Declan did quite well on the airplane rides. This is good because we have 3 more trips between now and early July. We're going to be great at flying. Then over the weekend he had a fever. Not too high (102 ish), no congestion, and only a little cranky. Kind of odd but he seems good now. We've been spending lots of time in our almost done backyard. He loves digging in the dirt but I am ready for the lawn.

calebashtonsmom

Magdon, that is weird, because Caleb was running a 102 temp for about two days. He had just been to the doctor on Tues. and was put on Zithromax for ear and sinus infection. They started to go away and then Thurs. he started to run this temp. It lasted until Friday eve. We went back to the doctor, there were no new symptoms, but this fever. I thought he was cutting two year molars (he is 20 mo.) but the doc. said fever was too high to be teeth. He switched his med. to augmentin (usually gives Caleb diarrhea and diaper rash, but so far, so good). He seems to be back to his playful presick self. I haven't seen him without a runny nose since August! Ha. Anyway, just thought that was weird when you said that.

Oh, wish us luck, we will be driving to Destin, Fl. on the evening of May 7th. We haven't traveled that far with Caleb since he was six weeks old, so we'll see.

Everyone must have a fever. Natalie had a bit of a fever on Saturday night/Sunday. It ranged from 99.8-102.2. We managed it with Tylenol and it has been gone since Sunday noon. She seemed more tired than usual, and took some long naps, but that was it. Her appetite was pretty good the whole time. Who knows.

We have been really busy with just life in general. I am glad to see April come to an end. DH bought a little backyard slide thing for Natalie at a garage sale, so she has been having fun climbing on it. I went to a garage sale thing at a church on Saturday, and got ~12 outfits for spring/summer for her for $25. I thought it was quite the steal! :)

Count Sam in as another one that had a fever! She ran a higher temp yesterday and was cranky, not hungry, etc. She went to bed early, had a great sleep and was back to her usual self today.

I recently posted a thread about how she has been afraid of the bath ever since I used some vapor bath stuff when she had a runny nose and congestion. She was terrified of the bubbles that it made. Ever since that night it's been a struggle in the bath. I got in it when there was no water to show her it's not scary, Sara has even put on her bathing suit and joined Sam the past few nights, but Sam is still scared. She tries to stand up and climb out. I just dread bathtime now. I guess I'll keep trying and maybe eventually she'll warm back up to it.

LaraW

Sue, have you taken Sam to a pool? I took Natalie a few weeks ago, and she was scared at first but had a great time after the first few minutes.

I have noticed her really playing and putting her face in the water more since we went swimming - maybe that's an idea??

Well, the pools around here don't open until Memorial Day. There is an indoor pool at the high school, but they don't have open swims or anything like that, to my knowledge. I did get her a little pool for the summer, so I'm hoping it warms up again soon so we can break that out. DH's parents have an in ground pool, but they usually don't open it up until June. Ugh - I can't wait that long to figure out this situation!

Will she get in the tub at all - maybe you could let her play in there w/ no water, gradually add water etc? I seem to remember some book I have talking about fear of the bath. I can look when I get home, if you like.

Or, you could just let her run nekked in the sprinkler in the back yard

hi everyone! just wanted to update... miles patrick sullivan was born via repeat cs april 18th. he was under an oxygen hood for around 36 hrs but then perked up and we went home on the 21st. he is nursing great! he weighed 7 lb 7 oz and was 21.5 inches long. he doesn't look anything like abby or us! i posted pics on the pg thread i think around page 10 or 11 but i don't know how to link to it.

abby has done really well. we had her meet him once he was able to stay in my room and not be on oxygen etc. her first reaction was to grab a package of crackers from the table and crush them to crumbs in her hands - a little subconscious stress i am sure! she wasn't aware she was even doing it. but she understands the baby is here and not in my tummy anymore, and she has only freaked once, when she saw me using the isis pump and then nursing him, i think she thought i was being hurt. but after that she has been fine. i feel bad bc i can't do as much with her bc of my incision and bc he nurses a lot. i know she won't remember this but it's painful for me!

she is still not talking and will be 22 months on may 13th.
hope everyone is doing well!
