As a Christmas/birthday gift, I have arranged for my husband and I to take a short vacation down in New Orleans in the beginning of May. We are going to stay at the Victoria Inn the first two nights (fishing package for him) and we still need a hotel for the remaining nights. We would like to stay right in New Orleans. Neither of us have ever been there before and are looking for a hotel with some old charm. We also want to try the food and go to a blues/jazz club. Any recommendations? Has anyone ever stayed at the Victoria Inn and gone on one of their fishing trips?
Thanks,
Colleen

I think we'd like to be right in the French Quarter.

We just got home from a trip to NO about a week and a half ago, and we stayed at the Historic French Market Inn (http://www.frenchmarketinn.com/).
The room, I thought was reasonably priced - I believe it was $109/night. It was conveniently located, the room itself was really nice, and they had a deal with the little coffee shop next door where you could get 1/2 off of a bunch of their menu items. I think DH and I could both eat breakfast for $4-5. Very reasonable. They also had a deal with a bar 2-3 doors down, and you got a complimentary cocktail every night of your stay.
The French Market Inn is at the corner of St. Louis St and Decatur St, and is right in the French Quarter. We found it to be very convenient, we could go back to the room several times a day to drop off our stuff, etc, if we wanted to.
Good luck! :)

I've been fortunate enough to be able to visit NO often. The last several times we were very happy at the Dauphine Orleans Hotel which is one block from Bourbon St. in the heart of the Quarter. http://www.dauphineorleans.com/
It's not on Bourbon but close enough. You don't want to stay right on Bourbon because you won't get any sleep. The Bourbon Orleans is also nice but you don't want a room that overlooks Bourbon - the no sleep issue.
There are also several wonderful bed and breakfasts in the Quarter. Try this site for options (http://www.bestneworleanshotels.com/#quarter) and also look at the Frommer's web site for recommendations.

You definitely do NOT want to stay on Bourbon St..the smell in the early morning on the streets would be enough to keep me away never mind the noise :o
I would also recommend the Dauphine. I also really like Hotel St Pierre http://www.hotelsaintpierre.com/

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check out the links. Has anyone heard of the Place D Armes French Quarter Hotel? I friend mentioned she stayed there.

We'll be staying at Hotel St. Helene on Chartres St. in a couple of weeks. That's in the Quarter. It's a B&B, and we haven't stayed there before. A tried and true charming old hotel is the Columns on St. Charles.

We've stayed at the Ritz and at W Windsor Court - both places are very "swell". Traveling on the company dime, donchaknow! I can only vouch for them.
You're so lucky - I love New Orleans!

I was there in September and we stayted at the Astor Crowne Plaza on the corner of Canal and Bourbon Sts. It is very centrally located, is very nice and, although on Bourbon Street, it is at the end of Bourbon street, a bit removed from the heart of the craziness and we never notice a problem with noise.

I'm reading with great interest as I've just booked a trip for May too! I was looking to stay just outside the quarter (for noise and less expensive purposes) and so far have booked a room at the JW Marriott, the Renaissance Pere Marquette and a funky mod boutique hotel called The International House (www.ihhotel.com). Can you tell we're indecisive? :D (If anyone knows anything about any of these places, I'd love any info to help decide.) Though I'm a little concerned its going to be sweltering hot in late May and may consider inside the quarter just to cut down on the walking in the heat.
Would love to stay at the Monaco (www.monaco-neworleans.com) as its a Kimpton hotel (funky boutiquey) but its a teeny bit too far out of the quarter and the budget. :( They have leopard skin robes! :D
